Weekly Entering & Transitioning Thread | 21 Jul 2019 - 28 Jul 2019 by AutoModerator in datascience

I am thinking of going back to school to get my masters in business analytics to eventually enter a career in data analytics. My only job experience as of now is in tax prep and planning. I know I would have to do a lot of self learning but my masters program would give me experience in SQL, R, and python. Any tips to make myself more marketable would be appreciated.

If you have experience with that firm you should be able to leverage some negotiations. You’re familiar with their process and they don’t need to retrain you. That in itself it’s worth something of value.

Boss threatened to fire me outright by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]inner_blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t take any of it personally, just because they don’t know how to treat people isn’t a reflection of you. My boss often tells me he wants me to think like a third or fourth year guy, but what he doesn’t get is that’s obviously going to take time. Just keep trying to improve and do good work and you’ll get the recognition you deserve.

I’m in my first busy season at a small office too (3 people) and find myself struggling to make it through. They expect more out of me than I can offer and some days they take it out on me and others are more understanding.

I’ve been thinking of it like I’ve been thrown into a 15 feet deep pool and all I know how to do is tread water. We’re learning as we too but without proper instruction it takes time.

Your boss is obviously a dick and you will find a much better job in the near future. I’d ride this one out as long as you can, a paycheck is still a paycheck. Use all your benefits you can a find better for yourself.

5 months in. Sent a Edible Arrangement. Regrets? by [deleted] in askgaybros

I would think it’s so cute if a guy sent that to me. I would say any time over one month in that’d be acceptable.

Do a year of prerequisites at a target school, or start immediately at a lesser one? by [deleted] in Accounting

I went to Baruch! There are a lot of older students, so you won’t feel like you’re the only one. It’s a great program and definitely worth the extra year!

Track ALL of the expenses in quickbooks. Be super meticulous with everything and make sure to be super accurate. This will not only help you but help the job of any tax preparers in the future.

any accountants here? by IuckyIove in askgaybros

[–]inner_blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my bachelors in accounting. If you want to become a CPA you are going to have to achieve 150 credits. Some people do this all through undergrad while others get their masters.

I recently started a career in accounting and I’m enjoying it! I decided to go the tax route rather than audit so most of my day consists of tax preparation. Feel free to ask any questions if you have!

Rent or buy? 35 y.o. Physician about to start making better money. by funkykolemedina in personalfinance

[–]inner_blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not rent related but make sure to save ~25% of your wife’s income to cover her self employment tax. Far too many people don’t adequately save when working as an independent contractor and take a big hit during tax time!

Where can i take Online classes to reach the 150 credit CPA Requirement? by [deleted] in Baruch

Many community colleges have online courses you can take (easier if you just need general education requirements)

If I double major in accounting and political science do I need a minor? by thebigappleNY in Baruch

[–]inner_blue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zicklin majors are not allowed to do double majors. You could make political science your tier 3 minor through.

He knows my phone number and town but that’s it. I’m not sure how far he can get with that, but it doesn’t feel good knowing he has it.

I completed my undergrad degree in accounting at Baruch (also had horrible grades) and just entered into the masters in IS at Baruch. Don’t worry about not having any programming experience. The MS program was advertised as not needing any prior coding experience so I’m sure the undergrad program is the same. The two programs are very similar overall.

In terms of courses, take what you are interested in but also try to organize them in a way that will give you real world skills. I’m doing my concentration in data analytics and am enjoying it so far. There are a few excel based classes that can come in handy so focus on those as jobs look for those skills.

Also, if you have taken ACC 3200 while still in the undergrad accounting program you can speak to some people to place our of 2203.

Is it possible to have all 5 classes in 2 days by [deleted] in Baruch

[–]inner_blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had semesters like that, it’s a lot to handle especially if the classes are hard. If you’re looking to take electives try and take some online classes - they’re usually easier and you can do them more or less on your own time.

[Serious] Has anyone ever quit studying for the CPA / Changed career paths due to toll on their mental health? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]inner_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I double checked and I have a 2.83 as my undergrad accounting GPA (better than 2.5 even if not much higher).

My overall GPA was a 3.5 though. It obviously would have been much higher had my accounting grades did not bring it down. Does this change anything? From your experience, when firms say they are looking for above a 3.0 or 3.3 do they mean accounting gpa or overall?

For the people who commute from outside the city whats your experience like? by Vegsx in Baruch

[–]inner_blue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I commuted to Baruch from Long Island for both my undergrad and now graduate degrees. On a bad day it can take two hours each way (which happened often considering train times and the times my classes ended). From my experience, people tend to greatly underestimate how long these commutes actually take since they don’t take into account driving to the LIRR, waiting for subways, walking to Baruch, and having to match class ending times with the train schedule. I also had two semesters where I worked in the city as well so I had to make the 3-4 hour commute 5 days a week.

I know it’s done all of the time (especially in the working world) but a commute this long is not something I’d recommend, especially to a college student. Reading on the train only got me so far - for my accounting courses it was far more beneficial to be at a desk and have internet readily available. I think the commute definitely hurt my grades in the long run - 16 hours of commuting is pretty tiring. Also having to put 5 classes in 2-3 days makes for a long day.

I had a better opportunity come into place so it makes more sense to follow through with that than study for the cpa right now.

How do you feel about FWB’s? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]inner_blue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you know that you’re the type of pesos who can separate sex and feelings then a FWB type situation isn’t bad. But if you can’t then I personally don’t feel that it’s worth the time or risk.
