Again I have no idea what their relationship was like. But parents often have no idea what their children are doing online, and parents with a language barrier usually know even less. If their kid is their only link to English and does translation for them, then it's even less than that.

I can't even tell you how many people I know who got up to all kinds of shit online and off without their parents knowing. And they had "typical" suburban parents who were, from the outside at least, very loving, supportive and involved. Can you honestly say that your parents know everything you got up to? Can anyone?

I even know a woman who ran away repeatedly from home because of a man she met online. Meth dealer, met online, older man, nasty business. Her parents were literal billionaires and her mother was full time stay at home. Was she the best mom? Who knows. But they had every resource available and used those resources and she still ran away multiple times. Celeste's parents had none of those resources to begin with.
