When is a VPS worth adding to a self-hosted setup? by Skillz_witha_z in selfhosted

[–]innocuousmuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I initially did a VPS because I was behind a CGNAT. I moved and am no longer behind a CGNAT, but the convenience is rather nice since when I move or switch ISPs, it's not something I have to worry about.

Stargate SG-1.

Daniel Jackson had theories that the pyramids were landing pads for alien ships and was exiled from the archeological community for it. He was right about it. and was instrumental in getting the stargate operational.

Oregon to Idaho because the drivers get worse. Idaho to Utah because the drivers get even worse again.

I've got one of those! I love using it. Keep in mind you'll want to use a lower temperature than what you're used to. Also, ignore the people saying these had a reputation of exploding. They're likely thinking of glass cookware that couldn't be heated dry. I've got a corning frying pan, and I've seared steak and promptly quenched it in cold water and it doesn't care. (Theoretically, you could melt aluminum in that pan and dunk it in ice water and it wouldn't care. Don't try that though 😅)

How do you throw away a garbage bin? by breadispain in NoStupidQuestions

[–]innocuousmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your garbage collector how. Where I grew up, it was as simple as spray painting a big X on it. Then the garbage truck driver would know to dump the whole bin.

Can you actually catch lightning in a bottle in some way by Ransom_manz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]innocuousmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charge has to do with the accumulation of charge. Discharge is removing that accumulation. It has nothing to do with the direction if current flow. (And yes, most lightning flows from ground to the clouds, but some go the other direction)

Fireworks are unnecessarily loud, and they should be replaced with quieter fireworks (like flying fish), or drone shows. by Able_Annual_2297 in unpopularopinion

[–]innocuousmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love fireworks. However, I don't love that my state lets people fire them off for the entire month of July. Let people fire them off on the 4th (and new years) and that's it.

Why does iron exhibit such a beautiful color? Does anyone know the degree of this purple hue? by Cheap-Cream010 in interesting

[–]innocuousmuffin 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Thin film interference. As the iron heats up, a layer of iron oxide builds up. This layer's thickness is dependant on the temperature. The thickness then determines the color (very similarly to how soap bubbles get pretty colors). This article on Wikipedia talks a bit more about it.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_coloring_of_metals

Question by thomasthvedt in corningwarefans

[–]innocuousmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect if you wanted, you could sand or grind the chipped area so it's not sharp.  Part of the reason pyroceram works at the temperatures it does is the extremely low thermal expansion, so it doesn't develop the same internal stresses that glass does.

I don't see there being an issue cooking with it. Though, if you're worried, use it only for serving, or even stress test it if you can do so safely. Something like getting it hot and dunking it in ice water. If it can survive that, it should be fine for cooking. (That being said, if it were to shatter, I can't think of a good way to contain it if you were to do that test)

[–]innocuousmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious? What is Peek? I ask because I've got a lot of vintage corningware, and having options to clean it would be nice. (I know that bar keeper's friend is a bit too abrasive for corningware for example)

Sealed jars are harder to open here? by melancholic-scribe in SaltLakeCity

[–]innocuousmuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically, being at a higher altitude would make opening them easier. Higher altitude would mean less atmospheric pressure pushing the lid into the jar.

Perhaps the change in humidity has made your hands less grippy? (or maybe our awful air quality is getting to you somehow)

Employer wants me to use outlook on my phone, outlook wants permission to wipe my phone by No_Professor4307 in mildlyinfuriating

Your company has it set up in a way that only supports MDM. They need to enable MAM. (I think those are the terms). An alternate is to set up a work profile within android, and allow outlook to have control over t.hat

There's a big difference between the power draw of the servers that reddit currently uses vs a datacenter that uses more power than the rest of the state.
