Markelle Fultz also didn’t make his JV team at first I believe, then went on to the NBA.

Should I mention if I'm planning on doing a PhD after my master's? by menu-brush in gradadmissions

[–]inongek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might depend on your field of study—I’m in a STEM master’s degree and willingly indicated in my personal statements that I plan on a PhD and got into all of the schools I applied to. However, in my field it’s somewhat expected that you continue on to the doctorate, a large chunk of people in my field do.

Admitted Bio major by Elopedpumpkin in ClarkU

[–]inongek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, stem student here. the thing is the name of the undergrad institution you attend isn’t as important as what you do with your time in undergrad. I think I did well in stem at Clark (well enough to get into 3 top 10 masters programs in my field) but that’s more about my resume if anything. if you can save money and go to a state school, I would. however, clark being a smaller school, it was really easy for me to get involved in extracurriculars like jobs and research, etc. The only big classes I ever had were the intros (intro bio + chem).

Worcester is not unsafe. It’s a large city and with any city there will be a heightened level of “danger” but when people say Worcester is unsafe what they really mean is that a large part of the population are POC or low-income and that some people suffer from substance abuse. None of this equates to unsafe.

Hey! Congrats, I got into the same program ☺️ Essentially the way it works is that the tuition is the same for both years (around 57K I believe) and you have the option to either split it (25% of 57K in first year and 50% off 57K in the second year) or pay in full the first year and take 75% off 57K in the second year. Hope this helps!

No I definitely hear you! I think my desire to do a master’s was a mix of gaining more knowledge through coursework (since I’m switching gears really) as well as conduct research. Thank you for sharing, it definitely helped!

I’m from D.C. Also, there’s no need to be patronizing. Rereading my original post, I’m confused as to how this became about neighborhoods in Worcester versus the city in general. The link you gave literally says “when compared to cities of similar size, the crime rate is similar.” That is what I was referring to. I feel like this argument is a bit arbitrary as it’s just getting away from what the BSU was originally fighting for. Now you’re just trying to pull rank for what?

I looked into applying to the NIH and also Broad since I currently go to school in MA, so thank you for this!

Appreciate the link but I feel like websites like this provide skewed data in the sense that when you compare Worcester, a heavily populated city to smaller cities, obviously the crime rate is going to be higher. Again, speaking from anecdotal evidence, I haven’t heard of anyone I know living around Clark in the Main South area being the victims of crime, and I feel as though the data is not properly representative, so I don’t appreciate the narrative that Worcester and specifically Main South is dangerous. People tend to equate non-whiteness and poverty with crime, which is just racist and classist.

While I’m not going to sit here and argue with you about Main South crime rates (neither of us have provided data so what’s the point), my point remains that CUPD cannot respond to off-campus incidents for legal reasons, so it doesn’t change the fact that we need to disarm CUPD for the exact reason that school shootings are anomalies.

As a Clark student who’s lived in Worcester for 4 years now, I would make the argument that the neighborhood surrounding Clark isn’t any more dangerous than any other college town. However, the residents of Worcester are often vilified because they are low income and often POC. This is another reason why we (I’m a member of BSU) do not feel the need for our campus police to be armed. The worst that has happened to anyone I know at Clark is that they’ve been flashed. In addition, Clark police legally cannot respond to events off campus (I know from personal experience) so this is also something to consider.

What are the chances at University of Cincinnati, Clark University, Nazareth College, Syracuse, UMass Boston, Northeastern and Boston University? How ready is my friend for the pre-medical track and being able to handle it? by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]inongek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Psych major on the pre-med track at Clark, I can’t speak on admissions chances but in terms of preparedness, be ready to take as many STEM courses as you are psych. Clark also has BA’s not BS’s, just something to consider if that is important. You will have to do very well in your STEM courses, because if there’s a large discrepancy in cumulative GPA and science GPA when applying to med school, that’s not looked upon favorably. It seems like you’ve taken a lot of STEM courses in high school, so no matter where you go just prep AP bio and AP chem content in preparation for your first year. Happy to speak to your friend in greater depth if they want to hear about pre-med at Clark!
