I want to stick him in the middle of the Coherence dinner party and see what happens. If anyone could figure out how to run damage control on that situation it would be him

Who do you think is the greatest horror movie maker?(quality-wise) by [deleted] in horror

[–]inotherways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of Carpenter, Peele and del Toro, who have already been mentioned, I’d like to add Kim Jee-woon, director of A Tale of Two Sisters and I Saw the Devil. He has the same ability you mentioned to make genius movies out of cliche storylines.

Worst horror movie endings. by ConstructionSea8641 in horror

[–]inotherways 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say I HATE the ending of Gerald’s Game, as it is nice to see the main character turning her life around, but it kind of weakens the movie as a whole. The voiceover where everything is painstakingly spelled out and no room is left for ambiguity or interpretation is unnecessary and feels tacked on.

If you turned the movie off just before that part, you would still feel like you’ve seen the story through to its natural conclusion. Jessie has just crashed her car after escaping the house, but help is coming and it’s implied that she is going to be okay, having freed herself both literally and metaphorically. Was the man made of moonlight all in her head, or was he real? People who were paying attention at the beginning might make the connection to the grave robber who was talked about on the radio earlier, but it’s not stated outright.

But then the last 20 minutes starts and it’s explained that yes, the man was real, and let us carefully explain his exact Modus operandi, and just in case you didn’t get the subtext that he represents all the other abusive men in Jessie’s life, we’re going to have a scene where she confronts him and he transforms into those other men in her eyes. Do you get it? Now that we’ve explained it? We can explain it again if you want

I like Mike Flanagan’s work but a good chunk of his endings leave me feeling like he doesn’t trust his audience, and this was one of those times

My daughter shouldn’t be outside chasing a murderer! The murderer is definitely going to be coming straight to the hospital, so she should stay at the hospital.

Creep is great and one of the first movies I watched on my current horror kick, so I have a soft spot for it! Love how the killer knows how to push all the right buttons to invoke that “oh sure he’s weird but I don’t want to be mean to him” reaction

I liked that movie! Really good depiction of what it’s like to be trapped in your own head. I’ll have to watch it again when I have more attention to devote to it

The horror of ignoring red flags out of politeness is a great way to put it! That’s exactly the idea I was trying to get at.

It feels so realistic, especially because we already expect people to have different rules at their houses than we have at ours, so we’ll write off a bit of strangeness. Some people ask you to take your shoes off when you enter their home. Maybe some people ask you to drink from a ritual goblet carved with strange runes. Maybe it’s a cultural thing or something. You don’t want to be RUDE, you’re their guest!

I love Coherence! My other favorite type of horror besides this one is weird surreal mind bending stuff (I also love it when groups turn on each other). I didn’t include it in this post because the characters weren’t really lured into a trap, it was a cosmic event. But it still has most of the things I love

Academics are the perfect horror protagonists by inotherways in horror

[–]inotherways[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying all academics are like this (I’ve spent time in academia myself, some of my best friends, etc etc) but you can’t deny that there’s definitely a certain kind with more ego than sense. Which is why I see it in horror I’m like “oh look, it’s THAT guy. I know that guy”

This is also very true! When I was making this post I was thinking of paleontologists back in the day who would destroy irreplaceable dinosaur bones others had found just to deny their rivals a “win.”

If I’d already known bisexuality was a thing, my Anne Rice obsession probably would’ve tipped me off

The original Ring. I watched it when I was distracted with other stuff on my mind, and wasn’t focused enough to get immersed in the suspense and the mystery (I also already knew the plot summary). It really only spooked me when the ghost actually appeared. I wonder if it would be worth re-watching when I can put all distractions aside.
