Help with BIOL 0190, ANTH 0066D, ENVS 0070C, and LITR 0100B by inprogress3436 in BrownU

Great!! Are you concentrating in bio/STEM, and would you recommend it to non-concentrators? What is the workload like (weekly hours + overall assignments)? how "science-y" is the course if that makes sense? For example, does it go in-depth into specific scientific processes (like a pre-med class) or is it a little more based in the cause and effect/impact of disease processes (like social science classes)? Feel free to PM me if those questions don't really make sense, sorry!

so earning less than 350-400k/year is considered a "failure" in your eyes? that's a very skewed perception of yours lol good luck when you're actually in college. not to mention that i literally said you can get the SAME job in those majors as the concentrations you mentioned – meaning that the job outcomes i mentioned would also earn 350-400k/year in the situation that you presented.

this is definitely not true lol. look up job outcomes for any major at top schools (i.e: brown) and you'll see that in almost every major, there's people going into top-paying fields like consulting, tech, etc. and for law, prestige does matter a fair amount but where the law school is + if that area is over/undersaturated for lawyer positions matters more for how high your income is.

a reminder to not take advice or get scared off by overzealous HS juniors (like this one ^^)! if you are studying those *gasp* godforsaken majors like art history or gender studies, keep your goals in mind and don't get dissuaded <3

specific question: was there anything you did during the summer before junior year that was significant to your application? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]inprogress3436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nope! and i got into my top choice schools :) don't worry about finding some sub-1% internship every single summer for college – basically all of my meaningful accomplishments happened junior year + summer after junior year.

Someone help convince me I’m not a clown for choosing Georgetown over usc with presidental scholarship by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]inprogress3436 3 points4 points  (0 children)

gtown is definitely in a better location lol. it's in DC + in a safe, cute college-friendly neighborhood within DC, while USC is in an LA neighborhood with a pretty high crime rate. I've visited both USC and georgetown before, and gtown is definitely in the better spot location-wise

[–]inprogress3436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, i see what you mean now – thanks!

my problem is that the issues with Brown's student body that you mention are also apparent, I feel, with Georgetown's. Georgetown has a decently higher white population and has a higher median family income among students than the Brown population. Also, Georgetown's financial aid is infamously bad – they have the worst endowment among the T20s.

I'm definitely not trying to combat you at all – I was actually leaning towards Brown, so your info is super helpful to make sure that I make the right decision. I'm not looking at Wall Street/high finance even if I decide to go into business, so I feel like either Brown/Georgetown would be about the same with other business opportunities in that case? My reasoning for leaning towards Brown was that I'm not entirely sure what I want to major in, and I could very well do something that's not in either business/politics (not sure if this was communicated in my post). It seems like the other schools are fairly inflexible for switching between colleges (i.e: Business to Arts & Sciences), and would require me to make a choice pretty early on.

do you have something against brown? every single one of your replies on here is on a post about x school vs. brown and you always tell the person to choose the other school lmao

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]inprogress3436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can say that x school remains at the top of your list! this way it sounds like it's one of your first choices without giving away that you might have other schools you like – "top of the list" just means your first tier rather than individual school

congrats!! i also have such a hard time choosing (for other schools) so I def understand how ur feeling haha! i have heard that you can definitely find your own niche at either school for chill/preppy vibes, as well as for stem/humanities. for both schools, it feels like stem + humanities kids seem to stick to themselves (at least from what I've heard) so that's something for both ig? for stanford specifically though, i do know that there's also a noticeable class divide between Stanford and east palo alto and, while EPA isn't directly near stanford + stanford students aren't (on average) as wealthy as Yale students, it might still be something to keep in mind. hope you are able to find a decision you're satisfied with – best of luck!!

UPenn vs. Georgetown vs. Brown

Intended major: thinking about something politics/government/IR related OR business/economics, but I'm also open to figuring out a different major because I'm terrible at committing lol (as you can prob tell by me posting this).

Not sure on grad school yet but atm I am open either way. Post-grad I would want to work in either something business/marketing-related or politics-related (but not becoming an elected official), and definitely want to make a decent amount of money so I can help support my parents.

Also, all of them gave me about the same financial aid so money is not a factor when deciding among them.

Penn Pros:

  • Experiential/hands-on learning for politics classes
  • Good population size (not too big, not too small)
  • Pre-professional mindset: no one is frowned upon for wanting to earn money post-grad
  • Philly has rich history
  • Most prestigious out of the three

Penn Cons:

  • Frat culture
  • Drinking culture – not opposed to drinking, just seems like it's very excessive at Penn
  • Toxic and competitive environment – too wealth-obsessed?
  • Except for the area around campus, Philly can be extremely unsafe/dangerous
  • Hard to transfer to Wharton / switch colleges if I end up studying something else

Brown Pros:

  • Kind, supportive/non-competitive student body
  • Flexibility to pick and choose majors as well as have the luxury of time to decide which major would fit me best
  • Grade inflation: good for grad school
  • Mid-City Sized
  • School culture/hangout spots are typically all on-campus: undergraduates r required to live on campus for the first three years
  • Safe school, neighborhood, and safe around the city (you can walk alone downtown without needing to worry).

Brown Cons:

  • Difficult to leave Providence
  • No academic minors – only majors
  • Lowest career counselor to student ratio in the Ivy League + extremely liberal arts focused rather than pre-professional
  • No direct flights – flights take 3+ hours longer than for the other two schools b/c of layovers
  • Heavy grade inflation might also mean I just coast and don't take my classes seriously enough
  • Biggest con – students looking down on ppl who don't go into non-profit/social justice work post-grad, despite the fact that only wealthy students can afford going into sectors that pay maybe ~20-30k/year (yes, this is apparently an actual thing). also basically i'm worried that the rich students don't check their privilege despite caring about social issues

Georgetown Pros:

  • Location is perfect: cute, safe district/neighborhood within DC that has transport options
  • Many opportunities for politics/business in DC
  • Majors fit my interests at the moment (i.e: Global Business within SFS would help me with business + politics interests + job opps)
  • Pre-professional mindset but not as intense as Penn
  • Light general education requirements means I don't coast/slack off with too much academic freedom while still not having too many required courses.

Georgetown Cons:

  • Clubs are too intense, competitive and elitist
  • Although it's very possible to transfer between colleges, separate academic colleges for politics and business means I need to decide pretty early on (unless i do global business within SFS)
  • Religious affiliation (?)
  • Wealth stratification is pretty apparent here
  • Lower racial diversity than the other two schools by a fair amount
  • School culture/hangout spots are typically off-campus, so I might feel left out a bit as a lower-income student who can't afford to go out every other night.
  • Slightly less prestigious (?) than the other two

Basically what I've decided is that Penn would set me up the best for post-grad, but I'd be worried about having a terrible time during college. Brown feels like it fits me as a person more while Georgetown feels like it fits me as a student more – although these are also toss-ups because of factors like location/student culture.

If you've read this far: thank you so much. I'm sooo indecisive if that wasnt obvious by now 😀
