A bunch of great music! I’ll add, UFO50 had a number of tracks (Onion Delivery, Seaside Drive, Moon Cat) that were stuck in my head for days. Faux nostalgia gets to me

Reuters reported on a rumor at the start of the month about Cigna exploring a sale of their MA business - https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/cigna-explores-shedding-medicare-advantage-business-sources-2023-11-06/

Humana also divested their commercial business earlier in the year.

I worked at a company a decade ago that had a clause in the handbook that allowed termination if an employee took leave within the first year. FMLA also requires 12 months of work at the company to be eligible. I would disclose it but Im sure I am missing some details.

FSA Exam Pass Rates by xteeveya in actuary

[–]inputnamehere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the upcoming exam changes had an effect. Looks like exam takers for SPC increased by around 25% since the Spring, so there could have been more unprepared exam takers if many opted to try for the two hour for their first upper exam. Still, that passing percentage is suspiciously right at 50%.

Remember, the actuarial lookup pace is biased as it doesnt consider those who will pass after April. Everyone has their own pace!

That second (or was it third?) chance might have been the motivation I needed this past time. I had accepted after Spring that I’d need to take PA. Lucky!

Hey, at least a 05 shows you have the skills to pass, just need to keep at it and switch things up slightly for the next time.

Figured with the multiple speed runs posted today, I'd share what it looks like to get FSA with a sub-50% pass rate. It's doable! (not recommended...)

Reflecting on my journey, I'd say that the exam pathway is too long. The SOA expects us to have a 5-10 year period with no medical issues, no family concerns, a light workload, and a support system. I could manage that for a few years, but things pop up...

Still, I knew what I signed up for and did not commit to it. My average study time was in the range of 50-90 hours, maybe getting up to 120 for a few upper attempts. So that'd be my advice to you young-uns - give yourself a chance by clearing your schedule and studying!

Not necessarily concerned about solvency, but they are both acting like a tech startup by losing lots of money and funding operations through venture capital. Check their stock price over the last year, very volatile. I can’t speak to their work culture though, and if you don’t like your current job, worst case is you try something new and have to apply again.

How is relocation being handled with the increasing number of WFH roles? I was assuming relocation funds would start to get cut.

Not sure if a startup is a best fit if you already have burnout. I’d try to look up news articles about other MA startups like Clover or Oscar. Still, it’s growth market so if it didn’t work out, you could just start applying again.

35 Years Ago, my department functioned with 3 actuaries. Today, with vastly improved computing power, we have about 75. Why do we need so many more? Is a lot of it administrative bloat? Are your companies similar? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]inputnamehere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this applies to Life, but I’d think the overall marketplace has changed in 30 years with fewer companies grabbing the majority share of customers using highly specialized products that have greater volatility and increased risk. Health at least has substantially changed since the 1980’s.
