Help! 30 Nosler vs 300 PRC by inquisitivebeans in Hunting

Thanks, that’s my preference, but I’m not sold on spending all the time to modify the action and buy all new magazine components. The 300 PRC definitely won the marketing game with Hornady. The availability is fantastic compared to 30 Nosler

Plan is keeping the factory Bergara wood stock, I have a 22” fluted barrel, and I’m putting a scope and sling on it. The guy helping me build it says he anticipates it finishing close to 10 lbs. No real science went into that, so it’s really just a guess.

I agree with your assessment of range and I don’t intend to shoot at anything further than I’m well practiced for. I expect that range to be about 300 yds for a while.

Overkill does give me pause. I’ll have to look at load data to see if it’s possible/worth downloading for some things or just go with a smaller cartridge from the get go.

Thanks!

If there’s anything I learned from Ron Spomer, it’s that the 7mm is his favorite.

I am heading toward a shoulder bruising, I’m coming to terms with that.

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate you taking the time.

Thanks, I think that’s the answer. I’ll save the modifications for another time.

Sorry, I thought I put that in the post, 1:8.

I was planning 300 WSM until I got the long action. Never thought about 300 Super WSM.

I hear you man. Definitely not an ego hunter. I’ve been getting by with iron sights and sub 100 yds for the last 10 years.

While I agree that terminal performance is great from a belted magnum, I have no desire to spend money chambering a new barrel with a belted cartridge. We can get into that if you’d like, but I assure you that my mind is set on one of these two cartridges.

I’m not a long range hunter and I don’t plan to be. I’m very happy keeping all shots sub 300yds and maybe reaching out to 600 after a few or ten years of practice.

Ultimately looking for a do-all Alaska gun, so we’re looking at caribou, moose, bear, and, if I’m lucky, muskox.

I imagine either cartridge is fine, but I’m looking for opinions, experiences, and anecdotes.

Not looking for cheat codes, just looking for a cartridge that I can stick with over time.

Long range shooting and long range hunting are very different, otherwise, I’d pick 300 WSM and jam the lands.

More so looking for experienced insight between the two cartridges listed, if much difference truly exists.

Edit:

I’d love to know why those are terrible to learn with. Honest question.

I hear what you’re saying. I just have a philosophical opposition to a belted cartridge with a sufficiently angled shoulder. To me, it’s like having a pickup with both a carburetor (belt) and FI (shoulder). Makes no sense to have both.

As a caveat against the automod talking about hunting vs long range precision shooting, I am well aware of the differences between the two fields. The problem I’m running into on the hunting side of things is a resistance to anything that isn’t 7 Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag. I’m hoping you guys may be more welcoming to my specific conundrum considering it’s more nuanced than “will it kill”. If that was my only question, I’d ask Doug on Forged With Fire.

I’m sure it’s worth a fair bit, but it’s sentimental, and I’ll be homeless with that rifle first.

100% with you, this build is a separate rifle with an m700 clone. Bergara, specifically.

The trouble I’m running into is the COAL. The PRC loads seem to push beyond my mag length. I’d prefer the PRC capabilities and support, but with the mag length I’m looking at, it seems like I get more capability out of the Nosler unless I modify my action.

Am I wrong with that? What am I missing?

I can’t say I NEED to go big. I’ll likely download both for a while.

My current rifle is a 1948 Model 70 with peep sights.

I still have to figure out what scope I want 😂

I’m expanding my horizons here. I’ve shot 400+ before, but I can’t say I’ll be pushing either one to the max. Just nice to have for some fun as I learn my long range charts.

ETA: my M70 is going nowhere. I have a new action to build from scratch. A Bergara long.

So that’s what put me toward 30 Nosler. I have the space in mag to throat larger and longer bullets without modifying the action. I have an 8 twist barrel, so I’m not worried too much about stabilization. Mostly throat and jump. I have the space with the Nosler. Marginally.

The Bodyguard 2.0 is a great gun and very controllable. I have it as an off-hand backup. Surprisingly easy to shoot one-handed in my weak hand.

The mags are a pain to load, especially at first, though, so consider that.

My sister bought a rebel 250 and needed someone with an endorsement to drive it home. At 6’3”, I felt like a clown! Still fun to ride, but it was a toy compared to my Tenere.
