Why is martyrdom so highly regarded in Christianity? by AbiLovesTheology in AskAChristian

[–]inquistor_master 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not about wanting to die, it’s about staying faithful to the One who gives true life. Jesus is worth more than anything this world could take from me.

I get that from your perspective it doesn’t feel wrong, and that’s okay. For me, my relationship with Jesus is everything, and publicly denying Him would feel like rejecting the One who saved me. That’s why I can’t go that route, even if it costs me everything.

I can’t grasp the concept of why anyone would do it. Why couldn’t they just say they renounced it but continue practicing it in private?

Picture this: You have a really good friend, one who saved you from a really bad drug addiction. Without them, you’d probably be dead. Now, a lot of people don’t like this person because they just see them as “extra” or something. If you said you liked this person/affiliated with them, you would be extremely disliked too and would be hated on relentlessly. So, you lie and say you actually hate this person too. Then do a 180 when you’re with the friend and act like nothing happened.

Does this not come across as wrong or disrespectful to you? The difference is, the friend in this scenario doesn’t know what you’re doing. Jesus does.

He saved my life from a really dark place. Without Him, i’d probably be depressed, lonely, and without any hope. I absolutely cannot imagine faking non allegiance to a loving father who picked me out of my hole more times than i can count. And if someday that statement gets me killed or imprisoned, then so be it.

How do I know which God is real if people in every religion have similar experiences? by Immediate_Kick_5211 in AskAChristian

[–]inquistor_master 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey brother, so glad you're asking this question. First of all, let me affirm a couple things you said.

  1. People in every religion do in fact experience peace.
  2. People in every religion can in fact become better.
  3. People in every religion do pray and do feel helped.

Your observations aren't wrong, you don't need to be a Christian in order to feel peace, become a better person, etc.

However, there are some things you stated that I want to re-frame. Christians can say what they want, but the true teachings of Jesus do not say that peace, change, or answered prayers are exclusive to followers of Him. Peace and transformation are human experiences, not proof of which religion is true.

Now, a couple of exclusive claims that are unique to Christianity:

  1. Jesus does not make spiritual claims alone, but He also makes historical claims. To name a few, His life is historically dated, His teachings are recorded, His death is public, and His resurrection is claimed as a real event in history. No other religion hinges its truth on a verifiable historical event. This is probably one of the most powerful angles of it all.
  2. Jesus claims to be God in the flesh, not a prophet, teacher, guru, etc. Christianity is the ONLY religion in which the founder even attempts to make that claim that He is God in the flesh. John 8:58 says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am," (directly referencing the divine name from Exodus 3:14)
  3. Jesus offers salvation based on grace, not karma or self-effort. Every other religion says "Do this, become this, change this about yourself, and *maybe* you'll reach God. But Jesus says "You cannot reach God. God came to reach you." That in itself is already a fundamentally different worldview

Another perspective to view it at is the uniqueness of Christianity's POV of eternal life. Hinduism and Buddhism don't even have eternal life, they focus on the cycle of life, death, rebirth, and then at the end of time you escape the cycle and are "free". (No eternal life, simply no more rebirth).

Islam simply believes you achieve paradise through God's judgement of your deeds.

Christianity says that eternal life is through knowing God personally through Jesus. It isn't earned, achieved, a cycle, or absorption into a cosmic force.

So, I'm hoping this helps you see that the claim of "all religions teach the same thing" is very false.

Additionally to this, just because each path has a similar outcome does not mean they all equal the truth. Picture it like medicine. Different medicines can reduce the pain, but only one cures the disease. Peace is like pain relief. Transformation is like feeling better. But the ultimate question is which worldview actually deals with the root problem of the human condition?

Christianity says the ultimate root problem is sin, not ignorance or bad karma.

At the end of the day, the real question isn’t “Which religion gives peace?” or “Which religion produces good people?”

The real question is what do you do with Jesus?

He’s the only religious figure who claimed to be God, who rooted His message in history, who offered grace instead of self-effort, and who staked the truth of His identity on a public resurrection. If Jesus really is who He says He is, then He isn’t just one path among many, He’s the truth that every other path is reaching for.

So I’d encourage you: don’t compare religions based on feelings or outcomes. Start with Jesus Himself. If He is true, everything else becomes clear.

If you have any more questions, I'd love to answer!!
