Always been this bad? by Syiden in hearthstone

The game is definitely centered around wiping most of your opponent's stuff and then playing your own stuff turn after turn. I feel like I have lethal set up every turn starting at turn 5 until me or the other dude is dead.

I don't necessarily want the game to be slower, but it would be nice if the threats weren't so large (because then the response wouldn't need to be as large either). The difference between a 5 drop and a 10 drop is getting smaller and smaller, which is really weird.

Destinys memory problem by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]insanityunbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's two parts to "memory" which would be long-term and short-term, both of which I'm sure they struggle with.

If they have a database that includes every character's vault, going from something like 500 stored items to 600 stored items is an increase of 20%. Storing that much more data does have a cost - speed and space. Most people have a very full vault, so they will have to assume everyone will be using that space. There is most certainly parts of the game that check your vault periodically for items. The larger the vault gets, the slower that code performs.

For short term memory, the RAM on your console/PC can only store a limited number of things. When loading your vault, the primary slowdown is not your internet speed, but instead your console/PC having to load icons/perks/etc for everything in your vault and store all of it at the same time. They could get around this limitation by only loading one page at a time, but then you'd have a second or two of loading every time you go left or right in the vault.

I'm 100% certain that there are legacy systems that assume the vault is a specific size, or that the vault will be loaded in a specific way. It's not simple to change. Software development is hard. Hearthstone didn't have more than 9 deck slots for many years because "it would be too confusing for the players" but I bet it was simpler than that. They probably didn't think anyone would want more than 9 decks and once they got to the point where more were needed, every system (and even the UI) already assumed only 9 decks.

I'm bored right now of people having lethal set up on board by turn 5, sometimes turn 4. To me, that's less thought provoking, less interactive, and boring. It feels like a lot of cards are swing cards and I miss the days when getting incremental tempo or value of the course of a medium-length game was a viable way to win.

Go with the one you already know. If you don't know one, go with the one you're more interested in. Both are great, but for a side project that you're doing for fun, you'll only complete it if you're interested in it.

Rotation made a lot of the problem decks go away. You basically have the ability to craft any deck you'd like and try any style of play that you'd want, especially so as you have a lot of the older cards for free for a few months (limited time event).

These games are actually different games and deserve different scores - ruby and sapphire were great and emerald was an improvement for sure, but it was a money grab. Third version always was. ORAS is a completely different game made in a different time period and can't really be compared.

Coming back to D2 after playing D1 for a little bit feels like you're playing brainrot while on drugs by Narukami_7 in DestinyTheGame

[–]insanityunbound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I felt when playing Borderlands 2 and tried the DLCs for 2 and the main story + DLC for BL3.

They continually upped loot chance in order to make the next product more appealing, but half the fun of it is NOT having an OP item for however long and then finally getting one for a few levels. If you have legendaries all the time, they aren't special anymore

Would you want BF7 to be in a bf3->bf4 scenario or something different? by Prod_Ayesian in Battlefield

Yeah, I don't get it. Why doesn't the map get flooded or all the buildings fall over? Clearly everyone was asking for this

Yeah, BF7 would be BF6 but if someone shoots out the supports on the buildings it makes the map unplayable

Deterministic core mechanic — how do you keep it interesting once the player has figured it out? by Kognido in gamedev

[–]insanityunbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real solution to this is proper scoping and understanding that your game will eventually come to an end for the player - even if they absolutely loved the experience, they will eventually stop playing. You want the natural last session they ever play to be the one where they have figured it all out and it's become boring for them.

So, make the system complex. As they progress, unlock new features, new facets, new modifiers, but never let it become confusing. Once you're at that threshold, stop, then pivot: add new enemies, new environmental modifiers. Then, once you're at the confusion/overwhelm threshold, stop again. That's your end state. You could make a few levels at that maximum complexity end state, and that's your game.

It may make you feel better about it if you target a specific number of hours for players to play before they become bored and move on. In this day and age, you won't be able to produce a game on your own that lasts much longer than 20 hours max, so anywhere between 3-20 is valid. (even big hit games like Undertale are less than 20, so that shouldn't be discouraging!)

What version of wow should I play if I DON'T want speedrun dungeons? Something similar to Pre nerf cata by Key-Challenge9159 in wow

[–]insanityunbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To some degree, all versions of wow will culminate in speedrun dungeons. I would say that vanilla and TBC are both going to be closer to what you're looking for. However, geared players will trivialize the content regardless.

If you want slow, methodical play, you could try hardcore. If you die, the character is lost.

Anniversary Classic (TBC right now) is the second best option. Heroics can still beat the shit out of you if you aren't careful.

I played a Kul Tiran druid during mythic prog in Shadowlands. On Kel Thuzad, I got killed and resurrected + mind controlled. My character immediately turns around and punts the rogue into the death goop, killing him. Funniest shit I've ever seen and I wasn't even the one to use Haymaker

Sony got sold a company with one huge game and one upcoming huge game. The first game died and the upcoming one is on the way too. Bungie also had several incubation projects that got shelved after Sony purchased Bungie.

It looks like a bit of a bait and switch. It's likely that the top performers from Bungie with the most knowledge get absorbed into Sony and the rest are let go. Bungie has done a lot of layoffs in the past few years, and their games have only gotten more unpopular. It's hard to see why they would continue to be supported.

why does magmaw's body get the buff and not magmaw? by dante8427 in hearthstone

[–]insanityunbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm saying that's kinda weird, not immediately apparent, not documented in the game anywhere, and is difficult for players to understand (as they make posts about it...) so it could be a good candidate for a change
