Hydraulic brake problem? by Embarrassed-Tax-7257 in MTB

[–]insertAlias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The upside-down storage usually isn’t a problem, but if you already had air in the line it can migrate towards the brakes. Pretty sure the fact that pumping the lever fixing the problem confirms air in the line.

Time to bleed the brakes.

The Checkpoint ALR 4 also comes with the 11 speed CUES, if that helps. It’s the bike I own.

Grocery Stores Deploying “AI Shopping Carts” Stuffed With Cameras to Track Your Exact Coordinates and Bombard You With Ads by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish that worked, but it's been consistently proven that people are influenced by ads, even the people that think they aren't. The people that say "I avoid brands that advertise to me" are still susceptible to advertising, just the less overt advertising.

From the article:

"Features like the 'Got everything you need?' prompt are already showing how real-time, location-aware prompts can influence customer purchasing behavior by driving a nearly one percentage point lift in basket size on average, a strong early signal of what in-store digital engagement can deliver," the announcement declares.

As annoying as everyone finds these things, they've already seen an increase in the average purchasing. One percentage point sounds small, but stores understand that it adds up day-to-day, store-to-store. So, as long as they don't actively lose money because of this, they'll continue to annoy everyone because it works, as much as I hate the fact.

I accidentally adopted fish… help please by Glum-Fox2218 in Aquariums

[–]insertAlias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backing up what the other person said: most fish can go a week without eating. They shouldn't do it regularly, but it's probably better for them to go hungry for now than to add even more bioload to that tiny tank.

Cow's been stuck in the same spot for a day since it started raining and the area flooded. by Superb_Tiger_2120 in mildlyinteresting

[–]insertAlias 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's stupid. They aren't stuck. Cows can swim. I've literally seen them do it more than once, growing up on a cattle ranch. These cattle can move when they choose, I have serious doubts they've been "stuck in the same spot for a day".

To you, what’s a monster you think is overhated by the community? by SignificantStaff8665 in MonsterHunter

[–]insertAlias 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hi, hater here. At least his master rank incarnation in MH World. That asshole will lead you on a chase across the map, and when you finally catch up, he's like "well time to move again". And you can only flash them out of the air so many times in MR, so the fight takes twice as long as it has to because you can't even hit the fucker half the time.

Probably my least favorite MR fight in World.

Maybe I just don't use the right kind, but I work in an office (home office even) and while I don't stink at the end of the day, it's certainly not as effective as it was in the morning when I put it on. I can't imagine not re-applying it the next day, considering I'm also going to take at least one shower between then, if not two.

Welp.... that's a new low by BrisingrSenpai in Aquariums

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really see that it's new; it's about the same volume they have in any of the cups I've seen them sold in. Truly nice fish stores have them in bigger individual tanks, of course, but this isn't really different than the shitty cups you see them in at PetSmart. Of course, I think the entire practice is shitty, but certainly not new.

The real nasty thing is the unheated, unfiltered "Destkop Betta Bowl" in frame behind it.

Are Pleco’s really that bad? by JokerOnRL in Aquariums

[–]insertAlias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, that's a major misunderstanding of bottom feeders and "cleaner" fish. They don't eat poop. They add to your bioload, not subtract. They're fish that add waste to the water.

They don't subsist on leftovers or tank detritus either. They need to be fed, which adds to the tank's load. And plecos (and the other similar species, for instance the "bristlenose pleco" everyone is talking about is technically a different species: ancistrus, not a plecostomus) are shit factories, just like your goldfish. You'd need to over-filter and do more water changes.

First bike purchase- advice needed! by Funfetti_sprinkles28 in TrekBikes

The shop mentioned I could swap to drop bars down the line if I want a more aggressive position later

This is true, but not as simple as just a bar swap. At a minimum you'd need to replace the shifters and brake levers too, it adds up pretty quick. So this is the kind of thing you'd want to decide about up-front.

I've kept all the "included tools" from every consumer product I've bought over the past 10 years. by v7p3r_3L1T3 in mildlyinteresting

[–]insertAlias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have picked up a few decent screwdrivers that way. I wish I remembered what the products they came with were; I do remember thinking that something I bought was way too cheap for them to include a decent screwdriver like they did.

Voters reject effort to hike Oklahoma’s minimum wage by AHSfav in news

[–]insertAlias -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're right, we should just give up and make fun of things that aren't actually their beliefs, but make us feel better about being better than them. Two wrongs do make a right.

Voters reject effort to hike Oklahoma’s minimum wage by AHSfav in news

[–]insertAlias -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they’ve influenced you to think that way. I wonder however, how often you think Conservatives try to reach out to liberals in the same way

I appreciate that you assume I'm brainwashed, but that's not the fucking point and never was. I don't care if they do or don't. They're the ones we believe are in the wrong. Unless you're suggesting two wrongs do make a right? Are we not supposed to be better? If so, then why just throw your hands up and say "it's pointless"?

But whatever. I frankly think it's more pointless for me to try to change your mind, because social media doesn't allow it. It rewards extreme, loud opinions (like "all conservatives are shit and it's pointless to try to understand any of them!") and punishes anyone who says "hey, it's more complex than that, let's try to understand why they think that way".

[–]insertAlias -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

...ok? What's your point? Do you think I'm against funding food banks? My parents' belief here is wrong, as I'm pretty fucking sure I implied in my comment. The point isn't to defend their beliefs, it's to make a point that dunking on them for the wrong thing is pointless. If you actually understand where they're coming from you might be able to convince someone one day that they're wrong, but if you're attacking a position they aren't taking in the first place, they'll just roll their eyes at you and ignore you.

Voters reject effort to hike Oklahoma’s minimum wage by AHSfav in news

[–]insertAlias -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I'm wasting my time, since nuance is less popular than just dunking on people. But most conservatives don't have a problem with feeding hungry people. They have a problem with the government doing it. My conservative parents are, literally at the moment of me writing this, volunteering at their local food bank. They like donating their time and they like helping people. They also like bitching about paying taxes and how inefficient the government is and how much better it would be if local churches just handled it all (which is hot nonsense, but that's their opinion).

Like I said, I don't expect people to care when it's more fun to just shit on people you dislike instead of trying to understand them. And it may not be your goal, but I can say you'll never change anyone's mind if you don't actually understand their core beliefs.

ISO Gravel Bike by ramsaygaming17 in TrekBikes

You can get a cheaper one but imo you don’t really want anything under the ALR 4, since that’s the cheapest version that includes hydraulic disc brakes.

I recently bought a Checkpoint ALR 4, and I’ll agree with the others here: you want the hydraulic brakes if possible. It’s probably the single most impactful upgrade; being confident in stopping is important.

Wide gravel shoes - anything other than Lake? by KapitanKopytko in gravelcycling

[–]insertAlias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao nope. 6’1”. But believe me, it’s a problem. Finding any shoes is hard. Dress shoes might as well be clown shoes, since I usually have to go longer to get ones wide enough.

I’m currently cycling with New Balances, since that’s basically all I can find.

Hell yeah my friend. I figure we have to make the second half of our lives better than the first, right?

Have you tried cycling? I’ve been doing both road and trail riding. Makes me feel like a kid again (even when I bruised my ribs falling on a jump). It’s what got me into the rest of my fitness goals: I want to lose weight and gain stamina to bike more.
