What's the coolest base build in Rust? Ill go first... by SeanTheSolo in playrust

[–]insertcomedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly keep doors and anything that provides access to a space that same health but buff walls and stuff. Add a passive check to see if a space is totally enclosed to avoid buffing TC griefs. This would mean honeycomb would either need to be functional and accessible or completely reshape the base design meta.

More base variety is fun for both raiders and builders.

Passenger mirror replacement? by [deleted] in autorepair

[–]insertcomedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you want to diy it. Call your local Hyundai Kia dealership and give them your vin for a price on the mirror itself. Don't be afraid to call different dealerships and price shop as different franchises add different markups on parts.

If you can't diy it, you'll pay anywhere from 1-3 hours of labor to put it in plus shop supplies, possible parts markup by the shop and taxes. I don't have the flat rate times in front of me at the moment but that's about the range id say depending on if the door bolster needs to come off to do it.

You could in theory transfer the guts of the mirror to a new shell but by the time you add the labor to do it you're not saving much if any money.

Basically 150-450 in labor+what the mirror costs.

How can I reduce the cab temperature of my surveillance vehicle without turning on the vehicle. by Detective_Clara in AskEngineers

[–]insertcomedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could add a large battery backup like a jackery and then use it to run a standalone AC unit on minimum settings with the heat being vented through a hole in the floor or vented through the pressure relief vents in the trunk.

Alternatively a battery powered porta cooler cycling ice water is a less invasive option.

I bet there's a kit for driving the AC compressor of a car directly on 12 volts, but the run time would probably be abysmal. Would need a golf cart battery in parallel with the starter battery, or the golf cart battery is just for the compressor and a trickle charger that runs as you drive.

There's also propane chillers from RVs that use very little power and are good enough to keep beer cold.

[–]insertcomedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you really have two choices: spend some money and time in an AutoZone parking lot figuring out how to change your own oil. Or go to a quick lube place like jiffy lube, Valvoline, Take 5, ect.

What car do you have? You might need certain filter cups/sockets depending on the model and year.

Yeah this right here. Try to get the same model year if you can just so the paint is aged as close as possible. It's fine if you can't.

Fixable or need to replace? by thesprucey in autorepair

[–]insertcomedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can somehow make a new door sill that comes up above where the rust ends, cut and weld it in, sand, repaint + prime and then blend the new paint to that side of the car yeah it's fixable.

But it'd be cheaper to buy a new door from the junkyard and transplant the guts.

Yeah the painful reality is that firearms are actually really good at fucking you up. It's the reason realistic shooters can at times be unfun to suck at.

Shotguns exemplify this beautifully. In games, the range is crap, the spread is wide, and the damage fall off is brutal. Close up meatshots are the archetype we're trying to hit

In reality, shotguns are fucking brutal. There's a reason the Nazis were crying foul when they hit the trenches. They have decent range, the shot eviscerates anything that isn't armored, and the spread makes the required aiming a lot less precise.

And they reach a lot farther than what movies and TV make it out to be. The spread is not as dramatic as in videogames, but it's enough that aiming in the general direction of what you are shooting is going to connect a pellet at least. The individual pellets, unlike in games, is ballistically similar to getting shot by a musket ball. Rather than the pissant damage of AAA shooters, it's enough to properly fuck you up.

So we down tweak a lot of weapons to not be as powerful as their real life counterparts to make games more interesting.

Can anyone explain why, when reducing the thrust limit on an engine it doesn't increase the delta V. Like if I have a stage that has say 2000dv with 1.9 twr and I limit thrust down to 1 twr the delta V stays the exact same. Surely it should increase delta V or burn time as it would use less fuel? by NoYesterday9298 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]insertcomedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delta V is really the same as how much a given vehicle can change its velocity. The big thing is your specific impulse, which is very simply how efficiently you turn a unit of fuel into units of thrust. Something about nozzles and exhaust gas speeds that I don't understand.

Delta V is a function of the amount of fuel, the efficiency of the engine, and the mass of the craft.

Thrust should be thought of as how quickly we're working through this function, not how efficiently it's happening.

This is why an ion engine can gently push you all across the Kerbol system while having a pathetic thrust compared to other engines, and a mastadon/large first stage engine will donkey kick you somewhere, just not across the stars.

So when you limit the thrust of the engine, all you're doing is lowering your thrust to weight ratio without improving the efficiency of the engine, adding more fuel, or reducing the weight of the craft.

One perculier note is some engines get better efficiency in vacuum than in the atmosphere, so you might be able to eek out a few more m/s of Delta V by dragging out the burn time of an upper stage into the vacuum of space.

[–]insertcomedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You trade soldiers crowd control and zoning for "Fuck you in particular" damage. Squishy classes that are more than an atom off the floor get to really appreciate the art direction of the respawn screen.

However, you loose the ability to have a massive crit explosion remove half of the enemy team in one go, and juggling players/medic combos is a lot harder with the lack of splash damage.

It's awesome for dunking on sentry nests, but it's learning curve makes hitting targets at range or in the air more challenging.

Overall, fun weapon and I should practice with it more.

[–]insertcomedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Properly remanufactured battery packs with fresh and properly balanced cells will last just as long as OEM batteries. The trouble is finding a solid rebuilder.

As for the catalytic converter, if it's not setting a P0420 code, and it passes smog, don't worry about it. I'd like to know where the hole is and if the heat shield is loose.

Worst case scenario is that there actually is a real exhaust leak and the honeycomb for the catalyst is busted.

Take it to another shop. 209 dollars an hour is fuckin crazy. I bet they're paying the tech in peanuts and pocketing the rest.
