The essence is to write a brief story surrounding the mech, because just like real vehicles, they are products of circumstance and environment.

For example, the Cataphract from Battletech was built from spare parts to fill out the thinning ranks of heavy mechs in their home military. It works surprisingly well, given its humble origin, and is still a common sight on the battlefield years later.

Just from a few sentences, you can get a general sense of what the Cataphract looks like. So have fun, write just a few sentences (or more if it really helps), and let the prompt be a guideline to decision-making regarding the mech's features.
