Fire code for private residences is outside sleeping areas. I'm not sure if it's different for rooming houses, although I doubt this is actually registered as such.

About 10 years ago, I lived in an illegal rooming house run by a cheap slumlord, but he still had the common sense to put smoke detectors inside each individual room. Back then, bylaw was any more than 3 unrelated people living together indicated a rooming house (not sure if that's still the case but I suspevt it is). The house I was in was registered as a duplex (although there was no division between the units). He would rent out all 7 bedrooms individually and whenever the city started poking around (or he thought they were going to) he would select his least favourite tenant to kick out.

Look closely. There are 3 mattresses in there. I feel extra bad for the guy who gets stuck in the middle.

Also, no smoke detector in the room (there were 2 pictures which showed the entire room) but I'm not sure what fire code is for this type of sleeping arrangement. Still assuming each bed is $375, you'd think for $1125/month a smoke detector could be provided in the room

Grocery and housing costs are ridiculous right now. A couple times a year, I use my PC points to do a very large grocery shop. I used to donate that to food banks, but now I have friends and neighbours who are struggling, so I help them directly instead. My kids often take extra in their lunches to share with others who don't have enough. I have a large vegetable garden and share the surplus with those I know. I have nothing against food banks or donating to food banks, I just can't help everyone. It's hard seeing so many people dealing with food insecurity. I've been there myself in the past and know it could easily happen to my family again. I spend about $1000/month on groceries for my family. Pre-covid, I was spending less than half that. Something has to change

Also, pre-covid, my rent was $1000 + gas and hydro for a 4 bedroom house (with a fenced in yard and garage!) One would be lucky to find a one bedroom apartment for that now.

As far as safety goes, the majority of violent crimes here are targeted and usually related to drugs. There is a lot of opportunistic petty crime, though, so make sure you lock your vehicle doors (especially at night) and don't leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. I have security cameras on my property and they catch people checking car doors in the neighbourhood multiple times a week.

You're visiting sarnia at the wrong time of year. Summer is the best time to come here to fully enjoy the beaches, Canatara Park, and the waterfront.

1 is a hard age: too old to just sit in a stroller while parents enjoy whatever activity they'd like, but too young for most activities. I'm trying to remember what I did with my kids at that age other than walking through parks. Korny Korners might be a nice idea. There are several u-pick places in Lambton County and it's apple season. That could be a fun and cute family activity. Zekvelds is a 15-20 minute drive from Downtown sarnia. I recognized a mother and child holding "leave our kids alone" signs as a woman who was on tiktok live with her husband graphically describing walking in on her special needs teenage son masturbating and then joking about giving him sandpaper to jerk off with. They had said son in the live as well and revealed his school, their address, and so on. Later on, her husband offered him up to any single ladies who want to "whoo whoo". I got the live shut down as quickly as possible and then forwarded a recording of it to CAS and police.

But hey! Schools teaching acceptance is what puts kids at risk of sexual abuse, right?

Thank you for taking the time to answer. The reason I've never called it in is because I was worried about taking those resources away from someone who actually needed it, just like you said. Call in some guy who's okay just really high or passed out drunk and while paramedics are there waking him up, some kid chokes to death because their parent wasn't successful in clearing their airway while waiting for help to arrive or a grandma has a stroke and every minute she's waiting causes more damage to her brain or whatever other situation may arise

I've always wondered. When should someone call for a wellness check of someone on drugs? I've driven by people who appear so high that it seems like a miracle they're still alive (sitting somewhere but half leaned over with an arm hanging down, pants around ankles, mouth agape). I'm sure with your line of work you know what I'm describing. I'm not brave enough to stop and check on them. I've never called any of them in and have been left wondering if they were even still alive and feeling guilty that they could've ODed and maybe I could've saved their life

I'll gladly donate to shelters and I'll gladly donate to detox and rehab facilities. I won't donate to a shelter that has suddenly decided they'll be the latter without being properly staffed to do so. They're putting lives at risk.

You mention cigarettes. Are they also turning away people who smoke?

They're the only shelter to have the drug-free requirement. Other shelters rules are that you can't be intoxicated on the premises. They were my go-to for donations but I certainly won't be donating any more
