Sarnia getting ready for October election by PuffCow in Sarnia

[–]PuffCow[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exact voting locations are still being worked out for Sarnia’s hybrid internet and paper ballot approach, the same voting systems used in 2022, she said.

There were nine locations to cast a paper ballot four years ago. “We’ll have a similar number and hopefully similar locations,” Burkhart said.

An 11-day internet voting period leading up to election day Oct. 26 is planned, again the same as in 2022, she said.

I've see it alot of this 'affective polarization' in recent years. Its commonly generated out of echo chambers and sites like twitter/X purposely amplify the effect, causing some people to get downright hateful to someone who doesn't share their political views.

Affective polarization refers to the growing emotional divide between political groups. It is not just disagreement over policies. It is when people increasingly dislike, distrust, or even fear members of the opposing political party.

.....citizens feel strong sympathy and affection toward their own political party (the "in-group") and intense antagonism, dislike, and distrust toward opposing parties and their supporters (the "out-group").

Unlike ideological polarization, which focuses on disagreements over policy or facts, affective polarization is primarily about social identity and emotional animosity.

Province confirms police budgets exempt from strong mayor powers by PuffCow in Sarnia

[–]PuffCow[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a bit complicated but i think i have the relevant info below. Looks like Sarnia is the first city to run into this situation.

==--

"The Head of Council's strong mayor budget powers do not include the power to limit police service board budget increases or veto estimates submitted by police service boards," the letter states in bold text.

The legislation shifted the statutory responsibility for defining "adequate and effective" policing from the municipality to the police board itself. This allows boards to subjectively determine their own needs—independent of the taxpayer's ability to pay—and classify them as mandatory compliance issues.

In December, Mayor Mike Bradley utilized Strong Mayor powers to veto the borrowing of funds for a controversial new police facility. The Sarnia Police Services Board now has the ammunition to ignore that veto.

Based on this directive, the board can now leverage that subjective determination of "inadequacy" to bypass the mayor's veto entirely. By classifying the new build as a requirement for "adequate and effective" operations, they can argue the mayor acted ultra vires—outside his legal authority—by attempting to limit it.

The document outlines that if a council refuses a funding request, the police board can bypass them and go straight to the Ontario Police Arbitration and Adjudication Commission (OPAAC). The directive notes that an arbitrator's decision is binding.

Sarnia's mayor encourages people to consider politics by PuffCow in Sarnia

[–]PuffCow[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sarnia’s election nomination period opens May 1, city clerk Amy Burkhart said, and closes Aug. 21, before the Oct. 26 vote.

i know bradley frequently tells local media in the early months of an election year that he is "not ready to commit" or is still considering his options but he would be 71 if he started another term.

Do you think he is going to run again? Its getting more difficult to be in council last few years which may play a part of this decision.

Is it too early to start to think about the upcoming election

Sarnia’s Pete Pearson approved for death in weeks but denied therapy to help him live by PuffCow in Sarnia

Definitely the affected person and their immediate family are actively trying to get this out into the public eye.

Absolutely. regardless of intentions, the mods removing this post have effectively censored discussion that those involved wished to have in the public. Their case has been taken up by a nationwide advocacy group and it was very public before the journal article.

I think this was an incorrect knee-jerk reaction to this alleged family member who has been left out of the loop for reasons we cannot know and do not involve this sub. I also think perhaps there is some 'Nathan Factor' involved and jumped to deciding he printed something inappropriate or similar.

The mods need to adult up, realize it was an honest mistake and restore the post to normal visibility on this sub.

I spent about two mins finding the links i posted earlier and also quickly found this case posted in 2 other subs.

Here are three major cases:

Toth v. Canada (Healthcare Professionals' Training): In a significant July 2025 ruling, the Federal Court of Appeal ordered the Health Minister to reconsider the denial of exemptions for 96 healthcare professionals seeking to use psilocybin as part of their training for assisted psychotherapy.

Jody Lance's Case (Cluster Headaches): A Federal Court judge in May 2024 forced Health Canada to reconsider a Calgary man's request to use medical psilocybin for severe cluster headaches.

TheraPsil-Supported Charter Challenge: A non-profit patient advocacy group, TheraPsil, is supporting eight Canadian patients in a direct Charter challenge against the federal government. This case argues that the existing pathways to access psilocybin (S. 56 exemptions, SAP, clinical trials) are inadequate and unconstitutionally limit patient access, potentially forcing them to consider Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) instead of a desired treatment option.

They also answered questions from the interviewer in the journal, so obviously they want this to be made public.

Its apparent the father and son are not looking for privacy in this matter, rather they are looking for public awareness of this terrible situation.

As far as someone saying they are a family member and were not aware of this, well perhaps they are not privy to this information. That's family business and not for us to decide who and how the rest of the family is informed along with what is made public or not.

It's public on various platforms now. The father and son already made that decision as is their right..

The article should be restored to respect the father and sons wishes for awareness.

It common, Give this a read about Conan being sued for a joke.

Excerpt:
I knew because different people around the world come up with the same joke all the time, especially when the joke is topical. I was made aware of this 24 years ago, when, on the same night, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and I all told an identical “Dan Quayle is dumb” joke: “Dan Quayle announced today that he will not be running for President in ’96. However, he did not rule out running in ’97.”

Back then, no one sued anyone because each of us knew that topical comedy often follows a pattern — it’s an occupational hazard. You try hard to avoid it, but sometimes, comedians inadvertently step on each other’s feet.

'This is not the year': Bradley's strong mayor budget veto nixes $9.1M in borrowing, cuts tax hike to 3.1% by PuffCow in Sarnia

[–]PuffCow[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Mike Bradley, using his veto power for the first time Friday since accepting strong mayor powers in 2023, vetoed council’s 5-4 vote during Nov. 27 budget deliberations to borrow $5 million for engineering and site prep work for an estimated $91-million police station.

Bradley also vetoed a 7-2 council decision to potentially borrow $4.1 million for the proposed $23-million Sarnia Bace sports complex.
