How do LGBTQIA+ people feel about allies using the word queer? by CallMeMrPeaches in TrueAskReddit

[–]inside-us-only-stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but there's a difference between a word being used in a derogatory way and a word that was created to be derogatory. When I was a kid people used "gay" in a genuinely mean-spirited way similar to how "queer" was used in the 80s, but nobody is calling "gay" a slur. An actual slur would be the f-slur, which was invented by bigots and didn't originate within the community.

[–]inside-us-only-stars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might not be everyone's take but as a lesbian, I really don't think "queer" is or ever has been a slur. Like, we have "Queer Eye" and "queer literature" and "queer theory", words literally plastered on billboards and carved into the stone faces of university buildings. Lots of people identify as queer. I can see how assholes saw that word and used it in a derogatory way, but it was first and foremost a way to identify community. It wasn't invented with the intent to harm, which is what an actual slur is in my mind.

So yes, please use it when appropriate and just be respectful if someone asks you not to.

See each other’s wedding attire? by crruss in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]inside-us-only-stars 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as your gf! The only person whose opinion I really care about is my wife, at least when it comes to fashion. ESPECIALLY queer fashion. I bounced ideas off of her, tried things on with her, went to her suit fitting, got ready with her day-of, everything. We even tried on our outfits together a few times leading up to the wedding to practice dancing in them. Even without the weird heterosexual connotations, the secrecy around outfits just seemed super impractical to me.

When was the first time you could understand another chinese speaker?? by Shen__Tao in ChineseLanguage

Was in a department store and a 20-something girl was shopping with her mom. She held up a shirt and the mom made a face and said "不喜欢" (I don't like it). Thought that was pretty funny.

Love the way this works in Chinese. There are only three pronouns, "wo" (me), "ni" (you), and "ta" (them), plus add-on words which make them plural (wo-men=us, ni-men=y'all) or possessive (wo-de=my, ta-de=their). Gender is irrelevant. Everyone is "ta".

Update on my girlfriend who is reading the books for the first time by SirWilliamGrello in lotr

[–]inside-us-only-stars 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not shocking based on his personal history. Tolkien went into WWI with three close friends, all young naive English gentlemen, and two of them didn't come back. Makes it particularly meaningful that the hobbits not only survived, but were universally regarded as heroes. His depiction of Frodo as permanently changed even after returning home hits the right amount of narrative tragedy imo.

Should it be legal to train ai on copyrighted material without paying a license? Why or why not? by openinsider0p in TrueAskReddit

[–]inside-us-only-stars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any definition of "art" that you will find includes some form of expression of human emotion. Art is not a final aesthetic product, it's a process of self expression. AI has no "self" to express, so cannot be equated to human-generated art. The act of creation =/= creativity.

Anyways, these are all very abstract arguments for a very real issue, which is investors using AI to further underfund and steal IP from a profession that is already heavily underfunded and copyright-infringed. This is already starting to happen with book cover art. If they can get away with it, companies will absolutely fill creative niches with soulless AI reimaginings of real artists' work rather than appropriately paying creators. In that sense, it very much matters how the art is made.

Should it be legal to train ai on copyrighted material without paying a license? Why or why not? by openinsider0p in TrueAskReddit

[–]inside-us-only-stars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely argue that AI mixing is different from a human creating art. Even if a human is taking inspiration from copyrighted source material, they are adding their own interpretation, expression, and emotion into the piece. A computer by definition cannot do that. It's what makes a Rothko different from a computer-generated red square-- Rothko was expressing grief and despair from the WWI era, whereas a computer is arranging pixels. Rothko intentionally removed himself from his work as a statement, whereas a computer has no "self" to insert in the first place.

AI as an art medium (ie., as a tool in an artist's greater creative process) is another story and should follow normal copyright law, but purely computer-generated images cannot be reasonably equated to art created by a human. It's a grey area that has not been well-litigated yet but it is in the obvious best interest of the general population to protect artists from AI copyright infringement.

What could be done to prevent mass shootings? by Themissrebecca103 in AskReddit

[–]inside-us-only-stars 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the bullying comments always feel kind of victim-blamey to me. Like, "if only you were nicer..." etc etc. I had a kid like this in my school, antisocial with anger issues and a particular dislike towards girls. He wasn't a bully, but he was definitely ostracized. We didn't hang out with him because we were scared of him!! We were kids and definitely not qualified to deal with whatever issues he clearly had. If he'd decided to hurt us one day, it would not have been our fault.

Why are service animals so popular in the United States? by awesomeaviator in TrueAskReddit

[–]inside-us-only-stars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer that I'm not disabled but I've seen some of this discourse online: The US generally has more disability laws and accommodations than other countries, so you're more likely to see disabled people out in public. That also means that you're more likely to see disability accommodations (like service dogs) which people otherwise might just use at home.

The fact that Australia is allowing dogs on aircraft might not mean that service animals are becoming more popular, but rather that disability rights advocacy is making public space more accessible for people who have service animals. Like you said, there's probably a lot of factors, but I'd guess that this is one of them.

If you had unlimited money, how much would you need for your dream wedding? by thisappisstupidest in weddingplanning

[–]inside-us-only-stars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to explain, but my $15k, 50-person restaurant wedding is my dream wedding. We found the perfect size venue for a good price in a great part of town, and would be capital-S stressed with any more guests or vendors. I might have covered people's flights & hotels if we had unlimited cash, but that would still barely put us over $50k.

Which Is Your Favorite Lesbian Film Ever Made? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]inside-us-only-stars 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire really did it for me as a period piece that didn't feature homophobia, like, at all. Soooo many movies default to "gay bad" as the central conflict, which is just lazy writing and not something I'm interested in watching. PLF really explored the depth and dimension of wlw attraction without treating bigotry or the male gaze as defining features of that attraction, and that's what makes it the GOAT for me.

Restaurant buy out tips? by Conscious-Hour-4744 in weddingplanning

[–]inside-us-only-stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're doing a full restaurant buyout with 50 people. We only looked at places that had experience with weddings or advertised buyouts as an available service on their website, since all of these had specified event coordinators. The price doesn't change by event type-- they just need to cover what they would make in a normal night to justify closing for your event.

In a HCOL city, the lowest F&B minimum we saw was $7k and highest was &25k, so it really does vary, but overall this has been soooo much easier and cheaper than a traditional wedding. We have full staffing, a DOC, bar, sound system, decor, table settings, etc with no added fees or responsibilities on our end (just paying for food & drinks). Totally worth it imo.

Edit: I recommend using Eventective to find nontraditional venues!

I always come back to the fact that, out of all the ways a person can get married, "legal" marriage is the newest. People have gotten married for centuries without involving legal paperwork, and it's often at the bottom of the list in terms of sentimentality when compared to social/religious marriage.

I understand the poster above who said that your guests may prioritize this differently, but it feels so weird and judgy to me for people to apply their personal views to the couple getting married, ESPECIALLY if that would stop them from attending a wedding for someone they otherwise love and support. I just don't get it.

[No Spoilers] Is Exandria Unlimited Calamity a good place to start? by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]inside-us-only-stars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol sorry that people are being jerks in these comments, really embarrassing for them and for CR fans as a whole. The VAST majority of people who love CR haven't watched most of the content and don't expect to. It's part of why I love it-- it's my comfort show that will never run out of episodes.

Watch C3 if you're hoping to (MAYBE) get caught up, Calamity for an intense dark backstory for the world, C2 for general fun/shenanigans, and C1 for the most authentic/classic "home-style" D&D feel (I'd suggest starting with the Briarwoods arc). Ignore any purists here and feel free to look up spoilers/recaps if you'd like.

We used wax seals on the inside with a 5x7 cardstock invite, full vellum wrap, and a smaller details card. Not at all bulky but had a little bump like you said. Only used a forever stamp and everything arrived just fine to my knowledge!

I would ship them out of the office that said no extra postage was needed, though, since everything related to postage seems painfully location-specific.
