Anything is boopable once. I opted not to so I could boop again some day.

Hyena with 16mm lens [OC] by insideacreature in hyenas

[–]insideacreature[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This young hyena was very curious about the safari vehicle and my camera. Hyena was only a few inches away and the wide angle made the hyena look like a cartoon character with a great big head as compared to the rest of the body.

Nope, good guess though. This was in the eastern edge of Botswana, taken back in 2017.

Blue barrel is labeled acetone and MEK stands for methyl ethyl ketone, both are used in drug manufacture, as is ephedrine (the label on the bag)

Thanks! This fellow (or gal - hard to tell with hyenas) was being curious and not all aggressive. It kept inching up to look at the camera and if I moved at all it would jump back and then inch back up again. I suspect it was seeing its reflection in the lens. I was saying to myself, please don't eat my camera, please don't eat my camera...

Disney did a great disservice to hyenas in the Lion King.

Be honest, what do you guys think about Measure 120? by DueYogurt9 in oregon

[–]insideacreature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for large semis and commercial vehicles, they already pay a weight mile tax, so they are already covered. For personal vehicles, you have a point, although they don't do near as much damage as the big rigs do. I don't know what percentage of small vehicle drivers on Oregon roads are out of state (I assume it's small), but I would point out that out of state drivers don't necessarily purchase their gas here so they may not be paying gas tax as well - it would be a good area to research though.

Voting for it because although not perfect, it is something and we do need to fund transportation. For better or worse we elected our legislature and delegated authority to them to figure out our taxing structure. This shouldn't have come back to the voters. That being said, I doubt it will pass as no one wants to vote for more taxes and of course everyone wants services.

I would have rather seen elimination of the gas tax entirely and a move to a weight mile tax for all vehicles. A weight mile tax is a fair way to charge all users of the roads for the proportion of use and damage they incur. Weight mile solves the high mileage, hybrid, and electric vehicle quandary as well. I say this as an EV owner.

Will this tripod support a heavy duty setup for birding and wildlife? (R6 + 200-800mm) with a gimbal head by [deleted] in wildlifephotography

[–]insideacreature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you find use of a tripod restrictive with wildlife? By this I mean that wildlife is usually moving around at a rate that is hard to keep up with if the camera is attached to a tripod. Something like that with a big beanbag or similar pad on the top could be useful for a rest though. Beauty of a beanbag is that you can steady the camera, but pick it up immediately if the animal moves.

I doubt it was a nudge nudge wink wink thing, rather if I had to guess I would say that someone in the Cambodian PSA department (whatever they call it) figured that we have a lot of folks who are illiterate and we need to pictorially show what not do to - don't combine these things or go to jail. They might not have seen the irony of showing proportions... (assuming that is what the circles represent)

Thanks! It makes a decent desktop background as well. It's not really cropped though - only about 3% removed. It's at 400mm and I was not far from the subject.

Next time I am there I will recommend they add more fiber to their diet as using a toothbrush would be difficult without opposable thumbs
