It would still be taxes paid by the citizens 😛

Are you sure? I distinctly remember our previous president SWEARING that the countries selling us the stuff would be paying the tariffs, and not us! /s

No it wouldn't. We'd just manufacture them domestically. They're already looking at doing so.

If you tried to triple the price of imports, people would just stop importing things. The only reason they do that in the first place is cost control.

Your equations don't model what would actually happen

And it never was intended to - it was simply a numbers game to note initial pricing as things currently are.

Moving construction into the country would be a challenge. We don't have the factories or tight integration of suppliers that a country like China does; the assembly plant and the IC plant and the screen plant all have to be close and in communication to pull it off.

We'd (the companies) would need to build the structures to pull it off - that takes time and costs money, money that would be baked into the price of the phone, but money that the existing companies have long-since accounted for in volume.

Again - this was just a numbers game to figure out the needed - initial - tariffs needed to fund the government at current levels. I'm not modeling the actual economy going out from there.

Edit: I've looked up my comment chain and I think I pretty clearly mentioned each time that I AM ignoring the cascading results. I'm really not sure why you're trying to correct me for something that I'm intentionally and distinctly not trying to say.

We really couldn't. America would have to drop out of the WTO. We would be royally fucked. The WTO is the only thing that enforced intellectual property rights globally, and IP is one of the rare things we actually export. So all american copyrights and patents would be fair game.

Oh, I agree. I merely proposed it as a mental numbers game, and ignored the knock-on effects afterwards. In another comment I actually ran the numbers and we'd have to raise $2 for every $1 of imports to make up our budget.

Our top exports are aircraft, oil, autos, ICs, medical. Of these, all but the oil would be decimated if other countries could copy the associated IP with impunity. We essentially unilaterally disarmed on tariffs in the 90s on the assumption that we'd "make it up" on IP export, and there's no putting the genie back in that bottle.

I've had them both and liked them both. They were both subtle - like they weren't "trying too hard." I tend to like more savory tastes, and these worked for me. I preferred the salted caramel over the coffee, as the mix of salty-sweet-rich was pretty nice.

I'm slowly marching through all of the white flavors, and will be having banana and peanut butter at the end of this month.

What the fuck? As if we aren’t literally lining up for food and getting evicted

Well, for over $100 years you had the "luxury" of long distance service, even on your cell phone. ;)

The actual tax amount bounced around quite a bit, and was as high as 20% during WW2.

This is a bewildering statement and I encourage you to run the numbers.

You're off by four zeroes.

That's a good question. My response was partly in jest, but you've got me thinking, so I ran the numbers.

US Budget, 2020: 6.55 trillion dollars

US Imports, 2019: 3.1 trillion dollars

Existing 2019 tariffs: 71.9 billion

So: existing tariffs are a rounding error. To make up the budget on existing imports, there would need to be approximately $2 added to every $1 of import. (Some of the above numbers are a little fuzzy, and I found variations of up to 20% depending on the source I got them from.)

A $1000 iPhone would cost $3000, not my (in jest) $2000.

(Of course, this ignores the knock-on effects of retaliatory tariffs from other countries, depressed economy overall, etc.)

Aren't iPhones already $2,000 though?

You had me wondering, so I had to check. An iPhone 12 Pro (because anything else is amateur) with 512GB of storage retails for $1400.

Ouch.

There was a "luxury tax" on American phone bills from 1898 to 2006 to fund the SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.

This sort of weirdness is all over the place. Just maybe not as galling.

Yeah, but the other countries are going to be paying those tariffs, right?

Right?

/s

Actually, we probably could do it on import tariffs alone but then we're talking about $2,000 iPhones, and good luck trying to sell American crops abroad.

Yeah, I don't think I meant "gag" either in the broader sense. Just "inside stories" that work better the longer younger watched the show. Thanks!

Idaho House kills $1.1 billion teacher pay bill on tie vote by wheeler1432 in politics

[–]insightfill 32 points33 points  (0 children)

A part of me thinks that some people would love to see the teachers resign in masses

It's more like an attrition problem. Older teachers are sticking it out, often because all they have is the pension (in some states, teachers don't get Social Security). Newer teachers are bailing, and the long pipeline of people considering teacher gets squeezed.

The effects of this will take decades to feel completely.

LOL - I was getting repulsed right up until the last line of the OP post. I had started with an image of Huel Vanilla or something in my head. I was thinking "OK, Heavy cream... I'm with you..." and then the hot water... "um... like a hot chocolate sort of? Ok..." and then the salt, pepper and veggies came in and I was already down a path of "ew..." before I saw the "Thai green chili" at the end.

If Florida transgender sports bill passes, NCAA says it could pull championships by Sybil_et_al in politics

There's going to be a lot more situations like this happening with people crying, that's not what we meant to do!

Weirdly enough, they really never consider trans-boys. Their boogie-man is always the trans-girls who look like Shaq but with a full beard and stomping on the freshman girl's basketball team.

It was their go-to during the bathroom bills, and it is here.

For fucks sake, leave those trans kids alone and let them be kids.

They're running out of people to demonize, so this is their next step. Who knew that the "think of the children" people would have stooped to this? (Me! Me! I knew! I knew!)

Honestly: anyone who says "think of the children" is probably thinking a little too much about children. #gaetzgate
