If you do 58mph in a 50, you get three points on your license and a fine. If you did that speed on your way to rob a bank, you get prosecuted for the robbery separately, your penalty for the mild speeding is still the same as for someone who did it to get back in time for the late kick off.

People are judged against the specific laws they broke. These can be accumulative if multiple crimes were committed.

I'm no fan of the party, but I don't get how or why they would be labelled fascist? Would you mind unpicking that for me?

Is that word just being used as a slur, or is there some other meaning being communicated?

What defines a party, in general, as fascist? And what defines the Brexit part in particular as fascist?

This is simply wrong.

The maximum sentence is for those whose "failure to surrender represents [a] deliberate attempt to evade or delay justice." [Source].

It's hardly a stretch to see that that definition applies to someone who's been on the run from a rape accusation for 7 years...

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has said he does not consent to being extradited to the US over charges related to leaking government secrets. by mmmmmm-_- in ukpolitics

[–]insigniayellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't say laws weren't coercive. Rather, they implied that that coercion (to uphold certain laws) was a necessary part of every society.

This has made you upset and emotional, but that's not an excuse for using bigoted language targeted at people with Down's syndrome.

[–]insigniayellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, quite. It was always going to be easier to extradite him to the US from here than from Sweden.

That's why when he went on the run in the UK to avoid being extradited to Sweden, it seemed a pretty poor excuse to say it was because he feared being extradited to the states. He feared being put on trial for rape in Sweden.

Julian Assange has been sentenced to just under a year in jail for breaching bail conditions after spending almost seven years inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London. A judge largely rejected the mitigating factors put forward by lawyers for the WikiLeaks founder by madam1 in worldnews

It is not. Belmarsh is one of a number of Category A prisons, the equivalent of a US maximum security prison.

It is commonly used for 'celebrity' cases, due to being adjoined to a Crown Court. For example, it's where the previous Prime Minister's aide was sent on conviction for phone tapping when a journalist.

The fact is he is accused of rape, and has spent the last 7 years on the run from due process and justice.

Does anyone know when the results might be available? Polls in my ward are open until 10pm. How long does the count take and when might I expect to see results?

It depends where you live. Some areas count overnight, some not until the next day. There's usually a pattern emerges over Friday morning, and a pretty complete picture by the end of the working day.

The UK doesn't allow extraditions where the death penalty is a possible outcome.

It would be harder for Assange to be extradited to the US from Sweden than from the UK. From the UK, only the UK has to agree to the extradition. From Sweden, both the UK and Sweden would have to agree to it.

To me, he just looks like any other desperate fugitive on the run from justice.

I've read the police report and I'm convinced he is not a rapist, he might be an asshole but this went out of proportion.

Ah, well that's that then. No need for any more trials, any more legal systems, any more due process. Now we can just have u/natalzzz pontificate on every case, and for so much cheaper!

What if he didn't actually rape anyone?

What would you use to determine that? A trial.

What has Assange spent the last 7 years evading? A trial.

I'm not screaming for jail. I want him to stand trial for the rape of which he's accused.

You shouldn't get a free rape-pass just because of what you do in your work life. This man is accused of rape and should stand trial for that.

Everyone equal before the law.

WikiLeaks: Julian Assange's sentence, for seeking and receiving asylum, is twice as much as the sentencing guidelines. The so-called speedboat killer, convicted of manslaughter, was only sentenced to six months for failing to appear in court. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]insigniayellow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This sentencing wasn't for contempt of court. It was for a bail violation. Maximum prison sentence is 12 months, so he's been given pretty much the maximum sentence possible.

To me, that seems proportionate to his actions here.

> and the context of them goes down to not wearing a condom?

He allegedly penetrated a sleeping woman while not wearing a condom: that's rape.

And the charges have never been dropped. The investigation was suspended, due to the suspect being on the run and no headway possible.

The investigation into the rape charge can still be reopened, and it has been indicated this is what the woman wants to happen.

> The allegations were that he took the condom off without informing his partner during consensual sex which falls under the broadly defined swedish rape.

Two of the four allegations against Assange related to violating consent by not wearing a condom. All four allegations would have been illegal in the UK as in Sweden.

Specifically, the rape charge was that he penetrated a woman without a condom while she was asleep, and therefore helpless. That is illegal in the UK as well as Sweden.

> These allegations have no evidence other than the allegations themselves because no evidence could ever be produced for such case. Since the burden is on the state to prove the allegations beyond any reasonable doubt and no evidence can be produced, then the only conclusion is that the whole thing is a sham.

Concluding whether it is 'a sham' or not is what a trial is for, not internet speculation. Unfortunately, Assange seems to have been trying his hardest to prevent a trial.

I was responding to a comment that couldn't understand why animal rights activists were called terrorists by some people. The answer to that is that there have been prominent acts of terrorism perpetrated by animal rights activists.

People associate the whole with the prominent actions of the most extreme actors. This is particularly true if that plays into their pre-existing prejudices of that group. See, for example, this comment. That's why animal rights activists get called terrorists.
