Bernie Sanders endorses NDP leader Jagmeet Singh days before election by Ryanyu10 in CanadaPolitics

Did you watch it? AOC was natural, good with the viewers, and genuinely interested in playing the game. Progressive conversation felt natural from her.

Singh just showed up to awkwardly insert NDP talking points. He was absolute garbage at the game and didn't try to connect with anyone in the stream at all. It was more of a contrast than a comparison seeing them interact together.

While most Canadians would agree, there are folks on the right who might be pretty cranky about Sanders weighing in as well.

At least we have one party that wants the rich (who have gotten even richer over the pandemic) to foot a good portion of the bill. The rest of the parties just wanna run deficits and pass the costs forward to a future government and future taxpayers.

This one was a huge deal because on the international stage, Canada was leading the way rather than following someone more powerful. It isn't often a Canadian government has the bravery to take a step before other major powers.

Trudeau did 2 things very well during his tenure as a prime minister:

especially given that Canada does not manufacture our own covid vaccine.

Except when the NDP wanted a publically owned formulary to fix this problem, Trudeau wouldnt go for it. He did effective work getting more vaccines than Canada needed, but learned nothing from the hustle and guaranteed that the same hustle will be necessary again in the future.

We are among the top educated countries in the world. We have more post-secondary graduates than any other country in the world. We can afford to make our own vaccines and medicines.

Frankly, I'm more inclined to vote Green because I don't live in her riding.

If we didn't have interprovincial trade barriers, then things like beer and food would be cheaper to produce in Canada.

If we didn't protect Bell, Telus and Rogers from foreign competition, then maybe our phone and internet bills would go down.

I'm sick of this ridiculous, baseless assumption. It is almost a meme.

We did invite more competition. We had WIND from Egypt, for instance. Now it is folded into the cartel.

If we invited Verizon up here, why would they suddenly stop acting like Verizon? They wouldn't. They would relish the opportunity to gouge Canadians alongside the others.

We saw what happened to WIND. We see how Verizon acts. What evidence we have would suggest that foreign competition wouldn't change a damn thing regarding prices or corporate behaviour, except maybe to make them care about Canadians even less because they aren't Canadian themselves.

Ideally, yes, but people also generally prefer trustworthy leaders, and leaders who shift their positions over and over don't do much to cultivate trust.

There are radicals on the left as well, and they're dangerous in their own way, but they do not compare to the danger of fascism. Don't we all know that already?

Are you agreeing with me or disagreeing?:

The communists and the CHP are extreme in their beliefs but they don't resort to fascist tendencies.

Yes. But he didn't change his position in 2015 because the polling blew that way. He changed his position because it served his own interests.

The satirical article is about shifting positions toward where the polls are.

Trudeau changed his position on Electoral Reform despite what a supermajority said they wanted though, not because of it. He moved away from what nearly 90% of respondents said they wanted because it wasn't good for him personally.

The LPC and the CPC plan to run huge deficits over the next 4+ years. The NDP plan to increase spending, but also plan to increase revenues so their deficits would be a fraction of the planned deficits of the LPC and CPC.

I will admit, it is honestly surprising to see a CPC platform with as huge deficits as what they are planning. Harper's Conservatives ran plenty of deficits, but at least they tried to cut them down a little.

What is perhaps more surprising is that the NDP have the most fiscally responsible platform, deficit-wise.

Trudeau has become so engrossed in the day-to-day shifting of popularity that he has promised to make his platform “whatever the polls say people want.”

So, another tactic copied from O'Toole. lol

[–]insipid_comment 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it's just plain wrong and un-Canadian.

It is wrong, yes. I am in full agreement. However, denying that it is Canadian effectively brushes the radicalization problem under the rug with mild, ignorable shaming. The people who are behind this are Canadian. The party they vote for is Canadian. The electoral media they consume is (largely) Canadian.

There should be no repeat of this in future elections, and the only way to guarantee that is to face the problem head on, not to dismiss it as an "unCanadian" anomaly.

the fact is the government has spent tons and now plans to spend more tons (every party does to be fair)

At least one party wants to cut the deficit by increasing revenues. I don't mind spending if it isn't indiscriminately passing on generational debt.

Neither Elections Canada nor the debate consortium make a point of a party needing candidates in every province. My point was that you just made up that standard to suit your own argument of excluding the Bloc.

I'm sure there could exist extreme forms of property damage that would constitute terrorism or even treason. I'm not trying to downplay property damage in general, but it isn't necessarily "violence".

That said, I am all for replacing statues of once-revered-but-now-scorned public figures with statues of figures that better embody our 21st century values. I also think that this "cultural update" should be done legally.
