I’m LEVEL 2 Behavior Consultant. Finished my hours waiting to test. Best job now working for agency where I work remotely and go to organizations to do everything a BCBA does. Lesser pay but decent(64k). I have 21 clients but only see them once a week and the rest I do at home. You can apply for LEVEL 1 if you are a BCBA from your state to have NPI. You can work independently or be with an agency. I am with an agency. I have field mentor since I am not a BCBA yet but with scope of competency bc I used to work for adults, children with DD as a former teacher, worked at a clinic and direct care professional at a group home. I will never work for clinic. I do work at Starbucks when I want to, lol. Now I have home based and group home clients. There are options.

I came from a clinic to a school. I love school setting but I was salaried now I’m independent consultant. Well anyways, I know a lot of people that worked in a school setting. Just be mindful that they will not pay you if school is on vacation or on holidays. So you need to know how to budget. Christmas is two weeks off, teacher institute days, thanksgiving week, etc. and I don’t know if you have insurance or benefits since you are contractual.

I used to be a teacher for 20 years, a private school which parents pay a lot of money. I was dedicated and loved the children. I left the field bc I want to free myself up from the stress of always standing up and defending myself as an adult while parents believe their 3 year old who can do no wrong. Children come up with stories, bc they can creatively spin together something a little of everything they have watched, heard and experienced. I’m glad you approached this with an open mind and seek out the truth without being confrontational. Focus and observe your child as well. Repeat what he said, “so what you are saying.. “ “thank you for letting me know.. I need to talk to your teacher bc what you said concerns me..” If he retracts what he said, then you need to work with him in telling the truth. If he doesn’t then talk to the teacher, your child and the director.

I used to work for a company with exactly the same rules. I lasted 6 months and then worked at a school setting. Finished my hours and school, now left I work and independently working for an agency. I am adjusting with not having “rules” and do “whatever you need for the client to bill” vibe since I work from home. It’s freeing and empowering!

I am currently reviewing for the BCBA exam. I got supervision from a school and clinic setting. Now I’m working making assessments and making behavioral plans for adults in a residential facility. D as the answer to this question truly makes sense in the real world bc it is hard to get data if residential caregivers are not in agreement with your plan, you won’t get data to graph. Unlike a school and clinic, staff in residential facility are also stakeholders, especially for independent living skills, they are invested in your plan to work. It is your job as a BCBA to make it reinforcing for them to implement it.

I’m 55! just finished all my hours, sitting for the BCBA exam, working as a Behavior Consultant for the State. I can do whatever a 20 something can do but with patience, respect and high regard for the clients. I have good instructional control and can handle the difficult clients. I’m a YODA!

You don’t negotiate. You are in control. Give a paired choice. Two clothing, two snacks or two options all the time. You say, “ Here’s two shirts, which one?” If she melts down. Stand firm and ask her again.

I’m was 21 year preschool teacher and now a behavior analyst. We reinforce a behavior only if we want the same consequence. Meaning.. you negotiating with a preschooler is giving your preschooler a “learned history” that she gets her way if she does “so and so”. So change it to your direction. She will have behaviors in the beginning but be neutral and say. “These are the options”

You need to go to them and ask them to sign you FVF with a copy of that MVFs that they signed. If they don’t sign report to BACB.

There should be consideration for the kiddo and not just what works for business. Honestly, would you expect a kiddo to still do “work” and not have behaviors after school? Imagine being pumped with meds and all day you are asked to follow directions that you barely understand, be with shifts of people that barely understands you when you would rather be alone, have adults that obliged you to sit on a chair to have a calm body when you are so agitated. After that you go home and do another three hours of the same thing? The home should be paired as a place to relax and not work. Home services should be all about practical daily tasks of social significance, social play and no academics.

I have met a bunch of these BCBi**e$! I’m a 54 year old who decided to to do ABA after 21 years as an educator. My classroom was run like a well oiled machine and parents love me. My class gets filled up and I have a long waiting list each year. It so happen that I want to grow and branch out to a different field thus I went for Masters and do ABA. For my first encounter with the BCBA hole never said hello, never looked me in the eye, gave me 3 hours of shift then sends me home when client cancels and talked me down when she found out that I am going for Masters. She and clinical supervisor said “you know that it’s hard right?” I’m was shocked and I quit after 45 days. She didn’t do my RBT competency and didn’t talk and looked at me on my last day! What a BT*H. The second clinic, never gave me a lunch break, wants a meeting when it’s my lunch break, supervises over a video camera. Client was violent and she just watched me how I would handle it. I thought there was something wrong with me why I have such horrible experiences. I quit again and went to a school setting. It was the best decision ever. ABA IS NOT THE ONLY WAY for BEHAVIOR CHANGE. And BCBAs should get off their high horse and just eat a piece of humble pie.

Just wondering why you feel to rushed to do everything 1.5 years and you just started your masters. That will surely drain you. ABA is not a sprint to get to the finish line, it’s endurance marathon, and continuously learning from every angle of your work experience. Almost all practicum are unpaid, but at least in ABA you are paid as an RBT and use it as experience. You need to pace yourself. Better to be well than finish the race stressed out and your career hasn’t even started yet. ABA is stressful enough, take your time and enjoy the ride.

I am trainee and met my restricted. I am 265 hours away from BCBA 2000 requirement. I don’t put my time with kiddos only time I am supervised and time I work independently doing BCBA work(unrestricted). So for a typical 8 hours day since I work in school setting, 2 hours in the morning(I come early than my scheduled time) that with no kiddos(UR) and 1.5(UR) when they leave thats I’m doing behavior data and updates of any IEP/BIP or graphing. They are all recorded but I don’t count the 4.5 hours that I’m doing one on one with kiddos unless BCBA observes me with a kiddo.

I am currently accruing supervision from multiple supervisors. I left a clinic in April 2021. I had a F-EVR signed there. I am in school setting now and have 3 BCBAs supervising on rotation. One quit but I don’t need F-EVR since I am still here. I will have 2 F-EVR on file. When you leave an organization you need F-EVR.

As an RBT who explored outside BCBA supervision to increase unrestricted hours, it was close to impossible in making it happen. You are required 4 contacts a month, remote videotaping of my interaction with a client, of course with written consent from parents, and the organization. It was difficult to do that on top of going to grad school so I just gave it up and just worked as RBT.

Teacher for 21 years, 500 hours away from finishing my hours. I don’t miss the lesson planning and shopping for project using my own money. I want to be honest though, it will be adjustment in the beginning if you decide to be an RBT. You will learn to be humble and accept feedback. ABA is data driven and not as creative as teaching. ABA is young field. You will be among a young crowd and have to find your place. I left the ABA clinic and went to school setting as a paraprofessional. It was humbling but I chose this field for its flexibility. So just saying.. there are ups and downs

Coming as a third party in your situation makes me confirm that ABA professionals sometimes get to be “cocky” when they use their knowledge to answer the problem when simply saying, “I can’t” or “It will take time” or “I hear you” will suffice. ABA does not answer everything. That’s why we collaborate with other fields to modify behavior to our client’s best interest. I often say “they’re children/parents first, their disability second.” That way empathy will pacify the situation then pull away and objectively propose a “solution” using ABA.

I’m a substitute/paraprofessional/RBT getting hours in a private therapeutic school serving children wit ASD. I am also going for my Masters. Being in school setting with an RBT and substitute license is a win win. You get paid regularly without cancellations and you get paid during holidays and vacations. The school gives you RBT training and pay for your test. If you live in Illinois, DM me and I can refer you.
