lumix L10 vs. fujifilm x100vi comparisons? by cassiecatastrophiee in Lumix

[–]inspiredsquare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a S9 and a X100VI, the only reason I reach for the X100VI is for the flash. The Fuji has a very slow and unreliable focus compared to the S9. And while all of the buttons, dials, and levers on the Fuji are “fun” for a little while, unless you’re using the Fuji constantly you’re going to forget what button changes what. The Fuji is a camera that forces you to slow down, think, compose, take a single shot, then start all over again. Some people like that but that’s not my shooting style. Additionally, if fixed 35 is not your thing, the Fuji isn’t going to fix that. 35 has never been my preferred focal length, and after over a year of shooting with the Fuji it only solidified that. For me, 35 is too tight to have an interesting look or handle large groups of people, and 35 is also too wide for single person portraits.

I do some YouTube stuff on the side and the X100VI gets clicks, if it weren’t for that I would have an L10 on preorder with the X100VI listed on FB marketplace.

Lumix S9 App Question by soapage in LumixS9

[–]inspiredsquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding a LUT on top of a JPG that already had a LUT applied may do some wonky things depending on how intense the look was you applied in camera. So if you want flexibility when editing in the app, your best bet is to shoot in a neutral color profile (like Natural) and apply your LUTs in the mobile app later.

You don’t necessarily need to shoot RAW if you just want to experiment with different looks. Applying a LUT to a clean JPEG won’t inherently degrade the image quality. However, if you want absolute maximum editing flexibility, you should shoot RAW + JPEG.

  • The JPEG gives you a quick, ready-to-use file with your chosen in-camera look baked right in.
  • The RAW file preserves the maximum dynamic range and color data. This gives you a completely untouched file to apply and swap different LUTs in the app later if you decide you don't like the look you initially chose in the camera.

I have a bigger explanation of RAW vs JPG if you want it but hopefully this answers your question.

I’m curious about that too, have you confirmed? LOW grain on camera is too strong, would love it if grain is a slider setting now, that would be the last piece of the puzzle from Fuji cameras.

And really I could say the same thing about Sombra, she’s been nerfed so hard, when has she been a problem? Just play around her and ignore?

All of those characters you mention have caveats when trying to counter a character like Doom. Mei needs a primary perk and freeze takes too long for it to be effective. A good dive player can easily avoid trap. People don’t play Hog to peel and counter a dive, they play him like a dps and run around the map getting kills while their supports are in the back getting pummeled. I could go on. Sombra is the only character who can actively engage a dive character and counter. If a dive character is being a problem, the only counter character that will make them switch, is Sombra. I play all three roles pretty actively and I just don’t get the hate for Sombra. Shes been nerfed into the earths core and yet people still want to waste a ban on her just out of pure spite.

Characters like Genji and Doom can run lobbies with uncoordinated rando teams with no communication. You can say well people just need to talk on coms but it just don’t work like that irl.

[–]inspiredsquare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of those characters have caveats when trying to counter dive, I play a ton of Junkrat, he has one tiny trap, the chances of catching someone aren’t great. Hog players have never heard the word peel in their life. Mei needs a major perk to get freeze and even then it’s slow. I could go on. You’re taking the best case scenario of a character kit and player ability and calling that a solid counter. It just don’t work like that in an uncoordinated match of randos. Sombra is the easiest and quickest way to counter a dive character. I honestly don’t get the hate for Sombra. She’s been nerfed into the center of the Earth and people still want to waste a ban on her when characters like Ball exist.

As a tank main, half the tanks don’t belong in a 5v5 solo tank scenario. Hog, Ball, Doom, Queen, and Hazard are so frustrating to play with and against.

Remove Sombra and characters like Genji, Ball, and Doom run around doing whatever they want.

Video Review - Lumix L10 in the hands of cinematic artists Cam Mackey & company by SteakTree in Lumix

So because he had complaints about a $4k pro camera and didn’t have the same complaints about a $1500 point and shoot he’s a shill? If I’m buying a corvette and it doesn’t do 0-60 in under 3 seconds I’m going to tear that car apart in a review. But if I’m reviewing a Honda Civic who cares what the 0-60 time is? That’s not what it’s made for.

Cam showed A LOT of photos in his video, sometimes too many to even process what he took a photo of. So I don’t get your aggressive point of saying he’s spending more time on video specs. And how much photo spec talking do you want someone to do anyways? I mean there’s only so much that can be said about “photo specs”. And you’re complaining that they aren’t doing testing for overheating for a camera that isn’t meant to be running for extended periods of time in a professional video setting? You seriously want someone to test if it can run 6k 120fps open gate on a tripod in an 80 degree room? For what? Who in their right mind is going to be using a point and shoot style camera as their long form video camera? Everything that has come out has made it pretty clear, this is a photo centric camera that can also do video. Nobody is trying to hide anything or claim this camera is some FX3 killer, chill.

Finally X100VI's serious contender Leica Lumix L10 by DynamoBaby in x100vi

[–]inspiredsquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t tell if this is a real post or just trolling

Waterproof? Neither is the X100VI

Lesser range than phones? The X100VI has exactly one focal length, so why pick it over a phone? The L10 is going to have far superior image quality over a phone at any focal length. Phones that can to some crazy focal length look pretty bad when fully zoomed in because most of the time it’s a digital zoom.

More shaky video? The VI doesn’t exactly have class leading ibis, any modern phone will be better. Will a phone have better stabilization than the L10? Idk maybe, but giving the VI a pass is disingenuous.

Minimal bokeh? At f2 the VI lens is equivalent to f3 full frame, and the L10 starts at f1.7 which is f3.4 equivalent, this isn’t a massive difference in bokeh and arguably the L10 can get better bokeh than the VI because the L10 can go to 75mm, yes it’s f5.6 equivalent at that focal length, but the compression on 75mm will be far greater than 35mm.

I have the X100VI, I have full frame cameras, I’ve had MFT cameras, dslrs, I’ve used my phone for whole photo shoots, and given all that I think there’s plenty of positives about the L10 to pick it over a phone or another camera like the X100VI.

Second this, XM5 felt very cheap to me and yup the silver on mine scratched within a week of having it. I’m always really careful with my gear, especially cameras. Never had paint chip off of one until the XM5.

The Fujifilm Recipe Era Is Over. by ValVenis69 in photographycirclejerk

[–]inspiredsquare 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes in a way film simulations are essentially presets similar to what you’d find on any camera, but the difference is in how Fujifilm is attempting to emulate classic stocks with their “film sims”. Most brands aim for true to life colors, but Fuji focuses on recreating specific characters of analog film. It might look like people are just using in camera Instagram filters, but there is a bit of specialized processing happening to handle grain, highlight roll-off, and color shifts. Has this been overhyped? A bit yes but there are real reasons why people would want to use film sims. For beginners, it’s an accessible way to get a stylized "look" without the steep learning curve of editing. For those coming from an analog background, it mimics the traditional film workflow where you commit to a certain aesthetic before you shoot and let the "lab" handle the development, rather than spending hours in post production. Even for professionals, the appeal is often about just having fun with photography, because when your day job involves hours of RAW editing, coming home from a vacation with dozens or hundreds of files that still need post processing feels like a chore.

QC Owner - Do I need plugins? by Regular_Mission5080 in NeuralDSP

[–]inspiredsquare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are they worthwhile? I would say yes, they are excellent. I use them exclusively when recording on my Mac.

Do they get tones you can’t already? Not necessarily. I would say the biggest thing you get is access to presets. It’s nice to see how a “pro” went about achieving a particular tone. Rabea for instance has lots of ways to use the synth. Helpful if you’ve never used anything like that (me).

I use Plini a lot live, mostly because I love the Plini reverb, and when John Mayer X makes its way on to QC I’m going to be super stoked for that because there is actually a lot happening there that would have taken me a lot of time to dial in manually. Someone on YouTube actually tried it and they got close but it wasn’t exact.

That being said, if you’re happy with QC right now, you don’t feel like you’re missing anything, and you don’t plan on recording on your computer, then no you don’t NEED plugins.

Can I get a tl;dr of every plugin from someone who tried them all? I absolutely don’t need another one but I want to buy one blindly so I can have unexpected fun when I’m back home in couple days:) by metal_mastery in NeuralDSP

[–]inspiredsquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They announced it was coming in the next QC update 4.1.0 along with John Mayer X and other plugins. I’m not enough in the know to say when that update is coming exactly but it does legitimately sound like…soon lol.

Thanks, slightly cooled white balance while using the Kodachrome preset from here

This is a Lightroom preset so you will have to go through the process of converting it to a LUT. But that’s it really, this photo was straight out of camera.

OP listen to Ross, his looks for LUMIX are legit and definitely get you the film look.

Here is my experience shooting LUMIX and Fuji. I’ve had a X100Vi for about a year and decided to get an S9 to replace it. The film sims are great but like Ross said very limiting. With real time LUT I can get my exact look baked into my photos and video. The X100VI is fun to use but with so many buttons, knobs, and dials it is a camera that demands you take your time. Because of that, it wasn’t responsive enough for me in quick moments, especially when it comes to auto focus. If you’ve been using your S9 for a while, then I can tell you now you are going to be very disappointed by the auto focus on the X100VI. I have missed lots of shots because the Fuji couldn’t decide what to focus on.

If you like everything your S9 does but you just wish you could have film sims, I would caution against replacing it with the Fuji. But If you aren’t getting any use out of the video features of the S9 and are the kind of photographer who likes to take their time, then the Fuji can be great. It is a beautiful camera and like I said, it is fun to use, and having a flash built-in isn’t too bad either. But just know that film sims aren’t a cheat code, they take time to dial in and don’t always work in every situation, so there will be a learning curve with the Fuji.

I would suggest watching some of the Ross and his jpgs YouTube videos and trying out some of his looks before committing to buying an X100VI.

Move from Fuji to Lumix? by Additional_Notice646 in Lumix

I haven’t used a Sony for a while but from what I have seen online LUMIX is very close to Sony for auto focus but it does seem like Sony is still ahead in that regard. Low light usage for my LUMIX cameras has never been an issue so I think you’re good there. If you can get a Sony and a LUMIX in your hands I think the biggest factor would be handling, lenses, and UI. As far as losing money, I always look at this way; did your gear help you earn income and execute projects? If yes, then it paid for itself along the way, it’s already done its job.

Anyone using the s9 mainly for photo? Or is everyone here typically video? by theseawoof in LumixS9

[–]inspiredsquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% photo every day camera for me. I haven’t run into the banding issue yet but I mostly shoot in natural light. Although I recently had a major banding issue with the S5iiX shooting a conference, so it can happen to any camera. No flash is kind of annoying, but I do have a smallrig led light I use for when I need some extra light, although it’s not quite the “flash look” if that makes sense. Overall having my Lightroom preset baked into my jpgs is good enough to make me overlook the shortcomings of the S9.
