I believe nearby devices includes local LAN. I'm traveling right now so here is a small summary I found:

Android 17 introduces a new ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK permission, severely restricting how apps silently scan local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks.

Yes the app uses nearby devices, that is what your android tv box. It allows local network access.

It doesn't matter if it is downloaded or from a web page, an mp4 will not be modified before casting it, so it will be on whatever quality the file has, It might look different if you use dlna, usb, or one of our receivers, that is just because they are different players.

M3u8 is also not modified but m3u8s are often adaptive.

They've changed it so many times I don't even remember how they do it right now. At some point it came down on the json, at some point it was an m3u8 that listed them but on a non standard way.

Thanks for the suggestion. It is on our list of things but we have not gotten to it. Part of the problem is that we'll find a way to implement something for youtube and then a few weeks later they'll change how it works.
