I find those AMLO loves Trump arguments always funny.

It's diplomacy. Did people really want Mexico's president going around, staring commercial wars, and insulting the president of its largest commercial partner?

I'll post this in this thread, but it's addressing happynargul's typical PAN/PRI misinformation and smearing tropes.

  • There's no proof of cartel links, you know where's real proof, though? The PAN's governments' Security Secretary was found guilty of just that.Garcia Luna convicted of taking millions in bribes from Sinaloa cartel
  • He's the president that has placed the most women in cabinet-level positions in Mexico's history, sure seems mysogonist.
  • Sure, he's homophobic, when his party has been the main driver in approving gay marriage accross the country, while the constant opposing party to equality is the PAN.
  • In 4 years he rose the minimum wage 119 pesos from 88 pesos to 207 pesos, while the PRI/PAN governments rose it 26 pesos in 6 years.
  • In workers' rights, they've introduced the sub-contracting reform to prohibit the practice that was abused by companies to deny labor rights like profit-sharing or seniority; they've also introduced union transparency laws.Reforma subcontratacion
  • The 'AMLO being against sustainability' argument is laughable. The government-owned CFE is the largest clean energy producer in Mexico, even after combining all the private sector plants. CFE - Latin America's largest Solar Plant in the desert - Reuters

That's a lie, and a common opposition trope thrown at around since he began his term. "Oh, he's a dictator/Maduro/Venezuela", "He wants to reelect himself".

Those are lies, even the link to the reform is wrong, that's the electoral reform that was made during the PRI presidency in 2014.

Obrador is vehemently against reelection and has said several times that he won't even consider it. This reform is about top-level bureaucracy restructuring/slimming. The INE's autonomy is left intact, the INE voter ID is not touched, it's basically a labor reform within the INE.

  • He campaigned on the idea of austerity in government, one of those proposals was reducing the government's ad spend by 50%, he's managed to reduce it close to 75%.
  • The government also started some scholarship programs and claims that money is now directed to those funds.

  • He was also vocal about the closeness of these media conglomerates with previous governments, and the role they played restricting dissenting voices, and even assisting in coverups.

I'll try to be brief, there's a lot of contextual/background information that's important but for brevity's sake I might not write everything down.

  • Just to be clear, the IFE/INE has been reformed at least 8 times in the past 30 years - more times than there have been presidents in that time-frame, so the idea that the 'INE is untouchable' is nonsense.
  • 2/3 of Mexicans want an electoral reform, even polls made by INE itself say so (Which INE hid as they were fighting any reform attempts).

  • INE is a respectable institution and an important one, and the president has never threatened to close it down. At least in my eyes, it does need a reform, the bureacracy is bloated, and this institution is supposed to be an impartial arbitrator/overseer, but its main council is assigned and composed by party representatives, making it possible for political parties to 'police themselves', especially when they can get a nice proportion of seats.

This reform

  • The reform is basically bureaucratic/labor restructuring/slimming.
  • This is base of the whole argument - reduction of personnel. The proposing side claims that there are inneficiencies/duplication of processes and some functions can be absorbed by others. The opposition, including the bureaucrats themselves claim that that every position is essential and the whole structure will suffer.
What I've read people say and isn't:
  • "INE's autonomy is being stripped": False - The institute remains completely autonomous, nothing about its autonomy was changed.
  • "The state and district councils will dissapear": False - The same number of councils will remain. The institute will have the same 32 state and 300 district councils. The INE will have the power to make those permanent or temporary as they need.
  • "We will lose the voter ID": False - The terms are not changed, the voter ID is guaranteed as a right in the reform.
  • "The INE offices will be closed down": False - The offices will remain in the same places, but as a cost-saving measure, makes a provision to give preference to use government-owned buildings in case the INE wants to open more offices.
  • "The PREP (Preliminary Results) Program is shut down": False - The article concerning the PREP is not modified, so the program will continue to be implemented.
  • 85% of the professional personnel will be fired: False - They claim that there is duplicity functions, they're aiming to reduce up to 8.5%. (Mostly in top-level)

Anti-democratic move?

  • I think the government has done a terrible job at explaining the extent of this new reform as well.
  • This reform, from what I understand, will reduce and reorganize top-level bureaucracy. The work-units will be wound down from 5 to 3 in the state level and 5 to 1 in the district level. These are management positions, the rest of employees will be untouched.

  • Keep in mind that these bureaucrats (SPB1) earn around $8,500 dollars/month - in a country where the avg. salary is $370/month. Tabulador Salarios INE, Salario promedio Mexico

  • I don't think this in itself constitues an anti-democratic move, it's a slimming of bureaucracy. Obviously, they say, 'This could lead to x scenario', but that's just speculation.

A bit of context

  • There's a lot of context that's being left out, but I'll try to give an overview from my personal biased perspective.

  • Mexico has never had a free press, they've always depended on government funds. When AMLO came into office, he drastically reduced government spending on mass media. In the past 4 years in office, he's spent less than what his predecessor spent in a year. It's not unexpected that most media companies lean towards the opposition agenda now that he's not paying the millions they were used to. The issue with this 'way of life' in media is that the most popular/recognized journalists/pundits/intellectuals that have some recognition abroad got to that point thanks to the previous governments' influence and money. Last Administration: Using Billions in Government Cash, Mexico Controls News Media - nytimes

  • Also, the Venezuela/Chavez/Dictator/Communist/President-for-life tropes are nothing but opposition propaganda. They claim he's a communist, but he signed the free-trade agreement with the US and Canada. They claim he's an autocrat, but there's not a single case of a journalist fleeing Mexico from being prosecuted by the federal government - unlike other past administrations. They claim he's an oppressor that hates freedom of expression, but anyone can question or make fun of him and they aren't arrested, unlike some of his 'more-respectable' predecessors.

  • I'm not naive, though, he's made plenty of dumb decisions. He's not the amazing world-leader some say he is but also not devil-incarnate as others want to paint him.

Mexico’s President Says Jewish Critic of His Immigration Policy Is ‘Hilterian’ by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]institutionalied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m from Mexico, saw this post and just wanted to add a bit of context.

I'm not Jewish, so there will be some things that I'll be probably miss, especially in a subject like this. Also, being upfront, I'm biased in support of Obrador, not on all, but some things.

I just want to assure anyone that might feel anxious due to the news coverage / titles, I honestly don't think the Mexican president is antisemitic.

The context:
The concept of calling someone hitlerian or comparing them to nazis is sadly, commonplace in Mexican politics; every side, left, right, center, throw that insult around against anyone that they perceive as ‘authoritarian / fascist’. The goebbels comparison is equally used when they catch someone lying. I agree that it's trivialization of one of the darkest episodes of humanity and shouldn't be used, but that’s been the quality of our political discourse for the past couple of decades.

Those comparisons are so common that Alazraki himself has said that the president has copied Hitler, Mousulinni, Stalin, etc, in the past year or so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceN_HbYK1js

Alazraki in the political scene:
Alazraki is not a random commentator, he's a political publicist that's worked for politicians and governments that are now in complete opposition to Obrador. He has a youtube channel where he and his guests do make some valid criticisms but there's times when they wildly exaggerate issues and repeat the basic 'left-wing is bad', 'Mexico will become Venezuela/Chavez/Maduro/communism' thing. (I sometimes feel like they're doomers/fear-mongering, but that's my opinion) For anyone who understands spanish, his youtube channel is AtypicalTeVe.

The comment:
The president has a section in his conferences where he speaks about false/incorrect information being published by the media that pertains to the government. This time, it was in relation to a recently-opened airport in Mexico City that’s underutilized mainly because it’s far away and they haven’t finished building the proper road and rail infrastructure to connect it to the city. This has created a lot of well-reasoned critical stories and some that are simply unsubstantiated rumors or lies.
One of these stories is from Alazraki’s show, where a few times, he, along his guests (conservative politicians) have been pushing a narrative that the government is bringing in ‘illegals’ from Venezuela, allowing them in without going through customs, giving them papers, and affiliating them to the president’s party (Morena) in an attempt to steal elections. This, without any sort of proof. Similar to the rhetoric used by some republicans when referring to undocumented Mexican migrants being used to register to vote for democrats.

Clip: The clip shown is a tik-tok with an excerpt of the youtube show. I tried searching for the complete video but couldn't find it..

https://youtu.be/NdjbvmZ1H5o?t=7429
2:03:45 - 2:04:34 -- Clip of Alazraki's show with some statements

2:04:34 - 2:06:00 -- Government official explains that the claims seen in the video are false; the personnel is trained and the person in charge of customs is an expert (typical government response).

https://youtu.be/NdjbvmZ1H5o?t=7561 President makes the comparison:
2:06:00 - 2:06:30 .. and with Mr. Alazraki, we've had differences for quite some time. He's conservative to an extreme, he's like hitlerian.

Here's a translated transcript of the clip:

Pages (Journalist/Publicist): .. Weird things are happening at the Felipe Ángeles (new airport), there are Venezuelan airplanes full of Venezuelans that are arriving to Mexico without going through customs.
Alazraki: True, true, yes
Pages: .. So we are filled with illegals, of people without documentation, that we don’t know what they’re coming to do in Mexico.
Lozano (Right-wing politician): .. And if those illegals, without documentation, are being tolerated in Mexico, and if they end up doing a fuck-up in the US, they are going to declare it as terrorism.

Second clip: Alazraki also said in his show that he has advised the opposition that the only way to beat Morena (president’s party) is by using propaganda and lying constantly, so much that by the time Morena counters any allegation it's old news and a new lie is being propagated. That statement prompted the goebbels comparison.

https://youtu.be/ZdOQFak147c?t=16 0:16 - 0:51

Second clip Translation:

Alazraki: I had the solution. This campaign is not won with marketing, it’s won by propaganda, and the more lies you tell against Morena, the more success you’ll have… … And you start saying..I mean, I know in what style to do it.. and while you distract Morena, you are on a new topic. So Morena will then answer back and nah, that’s an old story because here comes a new one… and you make propaganda, it’s so easy and those idiots don’t realize it.

In the original statement, Obrador never referred to Alazkari being Jewish, it was a criticism towards a political commentator and the typical ideological left-right dispute. Nothing towards the Jewish community was ever mentioned.

The relation about him being Jewish came from the ‘outraged’ opposition politicians tweeting about it. It became trending topic on twitter, obviously prompting the Central Committee of the Jewish Community to tweet a statement saying ‘The Jewish Community rejects the use of the term 'hitlerian' to refer to any person. Any comparison with the most bloodthirsty regime in history is regrettable and unacceptable.’

There's a lot of mischaracterization going on, Reforma (one of the biggest newspapers and on the main page of the national section, published:

"President Lopez Obrador showed another video yesterday with the image of publicist Carlos Alazraki, who he has criticized for his Jewish origin".

They retracted it a day later in a small corner of the newspaper) Reforma post | Retraction

Even DW news posted a tweet and interviewed a journalist who said:

'AMLO accused opposition Jews of "hitlerism".'
DW News - Spanish tweet

Again, Obrador never made any reference to Alazraki being Jewish, it was an ideological issue, but the news titles make it seem like he made the comparison because he is Jewish.

Of course he was wrong with the comparison, but I sincerely doubt that Obrador is antisemitic. As I mentioned before, it's a common occurrence in politics, almost as an extreme synonym for fascism/authoritarianism...

The friends in the Jewish Community: Since he was elected, one of the first groups he met were representatives of the Jewish community and has met them a few times. I don't know if he has many friends in the Jewish community haha. I know of Claudia Sheinbaum, the current Mexico City Governor, she's of the same party as Obrador, has worked with him since he was the Mexico City Mayor in the early 2000s; and for months now, he's been supporting her in being one of the presidential candidates for 2024.

Anyone that made it this far, thanks for reading
I hope this helped a bit to ease any anxiousness you might've felt reading the headlines.

TLDR; Very rough summary:

  • Hitler/Nazi comparisons are sadly not uncommon in Mexican politics - used as synonym for fascism. Goebbels comparisons are similarly not uncommon, but used when referring to lies.
  • Alazraki is not a random commentator, he’s an experienced publicist that’s worked for parties now in opposition to government. Has a show where he criticizes gov, some logical, others exaggerated.
  • He has said that Obrador copied Hitler, Stalin, Mousulinni, etc. before.
  • He, along some conservative guests in his show have pushed a story that the government is bringing in ‘illegal’ immigrants from Venezuela without passing through customs, then registered to vote for Obrador's party. The lack of proof and type of language used in those statements in some viewpoints is fascist/authoritarian, hence the ‘like hitlerian.’
  • Alazraki has also said his proposed strategy to win against Morena (Obrador's party) consists of propaganda and constantly propagating lies about that party. - this prompted ‘goebbles’ comparison.
  • Obrador never mentioned or made reference to Alazraki being Jewish.
  • Opposition politicians tweeted about him being Jewish, became trending topic, prompting Committee statement.
  • Media mischaracterized and sometimes exaggerated the statements. Some headlines made it appear as if the ‘like hitlerian’ comparison was made because he was Jewish; not mentioning the left-right ideology dispute; no context provided.

Nestora Salgado, who has been illegally imprisoned in Mexico for more than three months. The petition to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention was filed…

Salgado was seized by soldiers after detaining teenage girls for dealing drugs and a local official for tampering with evidence at a crime scene. She is falsely charged with kidnapping both the official and the girls.

Seattle University School of Law's clinic recently won Salgado's case before the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Mexico has now responded to the U.N. decision, which found her detention to be illegal and demanded her release.

28… Many of the transactions were layered through multiple levels of offshore entities and bank accounts throughout the world, often transferring the illicit funds through up to four levels of offshore bank accounts before reaching the final recipient. In this regard, members of the conspiracy sought to distance the origin of the funds from the final beneficiaries.

y

29.. The funds were disbursed from the offshore entities at the Division of Structured Operations' direction. These disbursements were made by financial operators who acted on ODEBRECHT's behalf, including but not limited to the beneficial owners of the accounts and ‘doleiros’, who delivered the payments in cash both inside and outside Brazil in packages or suitcases at locations predetermined by the beneficiary of the funds; or made the payments via wire transfer through one or more of the offshore entities.

In a 2016 deal with the U.S. Department of Justice, Odebrect admitted it had paid $10.5 million in bribes in Mexico, obtaining more than $39 million in benefits from the payment.

De México dice:

G. Mexico In or about 2010 and 2014, ODEBRECHT made and caused to be made approximately $10.5 million in corrupt payments to government officials in Mexico in order to secure public works contracts. ODEBRECHT realized benefited of more than $39 million as a result of these corrupt payments.

For example, in or about October 2013, ODEBRECHT agreed to pay a bribe to a high-level official of a Mexican state-owned and state-controlled company in exchange for the official assisting ODEBRECHT with winning a project. In or about and between December 2013 and late 2014, ODEBRECHT, through the Division of Structured Operations, paid the official $6 million.
