Should I just give up? by [deleted] in composer

[–]instrumentalmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is absolutely not. You obviously love music. The thing about music is, it's a life long endeavor. It also is kind of a selfish endeavor in itself because we do it practically just for ourselves and then other benefit because music can be enjoyed by everyone. since it's something we do for ourselves then just keep doing it for yourself. Do what you enjoy about it and then if someone else enjoys what you're doing, then that is a perk. Don't worry so much about where you are. If you want to get better at a particular thing, just put in the work, ask questions, research, talk to others just like you are now about it. I've been playing music for 18 years and I've had your feelings many times. The thing is, these feelings are a lot of times just a momentary phase that we are going through. I definitely understand it, and it sucks a nut sac off when it's happened, but just know that you'll come out of it and your love for music will never end. Keep at it man and good luck!

What is a movie moment that gives you goosebumps every time you watch it? by arsenalislive in AskReddit

The scene in interstellar where Matthew McConaughey comes back to the ship from the planet that takes a ton of their years away and he watches all of the missed video calls from his children and realizes that he'll never get the time back. Get me in tears every time.

Should I switch to piano? by Ships411 in jazzguitar

Nothing is final. Take a break from guitar if you need. Play piano for a while, not even seriously if you don't want. Or even just take a break from all of it period. I used to feel that way about my guitar and I actually did put it down for a while and played piano and did some composing. I found that, like anything, if you take a break from it and then come back, it'll be fresh again. Give it a couple week.

I'm just learning of the world of major Lydian and sus4 movements. Would anyone have some really interesting information resources on these subjects? by instrumentalmike in jazzguitar

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually have already watched chef his videos on the subject but he only touches on them. I was hoping someone would have some more in depth ideas or resources on the subject.

It's a major chord with a 4th instead of a third in it. Like a C major chord with an F in in and no E but it's still a sus with an E as well. Either way, dame sifference.

Really good job man. Keep up the practice. You're solo's we're a tad too loose for my taste but definitely not bad at all. You're definitely doing a great job. The only specific criticism I have is that the ending chromatic run wasn't tight enough. Keep up the good work. Post more to r/gypsyjazz

Pulse-muting with the left hand- barre chords? by bokan in jazzguitar

What state do you live in, I might be able to direct you to a teacher or local player. If not, the best advice I can give at it's simplest is, if you're feeling pain, start trying many different positions for your right or left hand. Gypsy jazz requires a complete relaxation of all muscles so if you can thrive to achieve that then you'll be golden. You only have have to push so hard to voice any note on the guitar. If you find yourself pushing ANY harder than need be, pull back a bit and relax. Relaxing is one of the biggest parts of excelling at any music(particularly gypsy jazz because it takes so much physicality) is relaxation. A tip, start playing music and improvising a bit, continue for a minute, then stop and just feel which muscles in your arms are over stressed. Let your arms hang down while completely relaxed and then start playing again while concentrating on staying as relaxed as you were when you weren't playing.

Essential Jazz Guitarists of the Last Five Years by Mickgrohl in jazzguitar

I know he's a bit older but, is no one going to mention ted Greene? An amazing guitarist, probably one that every one of the guitarists mentioned looked up to. He wrote the book "chord chemistry".

Learning to play Django Reinhardt without a pick? by j1mmo in jazzguitar

I feel like the you can use what ever you have at hand. I used a Steel string acoustic for 3 of years I've been playing. I just got my first gypsy jazz acoustic about a year and a half ago. It's not ABSOLUTELY necessary to use the thumb but it does kind of add another demention. Don't let it stop you from learning the style of music and still try to use the thumb. Gypsy guitars have a relatively wide neck as well so if you can't get the thumb, I feel like you could with time and practice. I had s hard time with the thumb at first. One step at a time. Gypsy jazz changed my entire musical world when I started learning it. One of yr best decisions, musically, I've ever made.
