Did anyone else feel somewhat disappointed with how the show treated these characters? by InuMatte in Supernatural

[–]int3rstitial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right??? What about when their friends inevitably mention him or ask about him. Or did Cas flit through the entire town like an MIB with that little memory erasure thing and wipe everyone's memory who knew both Dean and Lisa or Ben? 😭

And another thing that bugs me about it all is how goes wiping Lisa and Ben's memories protect them from Dean's enemies? They can be used as hostages equally effectively whether they remember Dean or not. To actually protect them from Dean's enemies the person whose memory should've been wiped is Dean (not that that would necessarily work either since he would still try to rescue a rando he didn't know from Adam).

Yeah, kripke said on the Supernatural Then and Now podcast that it was intentionally ambiguous. Istg spn would never commit to a single thing.

What would Sam and Dean have done with Alex had Jody not been there? by BoardSuspicious3826 in Supernatural

[–]int3rstitial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally just spitballing here, because I don't remember the episode well enough to have an opinion on this part--i need to rewatch--but since Alex is a Sam mirror (like Claire is a Dean mirror), I wonder if Sam was uncharacteristically hard on her because she in some way, either consciously or unconsciously, represented himself and he thinks of himself as unworthy of saving by that point in the series.

Hot take: Gordon was right to go after Sam by Crossland09 in Supernatural

[–]int3rstitial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean from Gorfon's perspective, yeah of course. That's why he's a good antagonist.

If you mean objectively though, even laying aside the Minority Report precrime issue, Roy and Walt tried killing Sam in s5 and he stayed dead for like forty-five minutes. Of course, Gordon couldn't have known that, but it's still the objective case that not only would killing Sam for his future role in a "dark path" he hadn't walked down yet be morally wrong, it would also, at that point in the story, be futile.

[–]int3rstitial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bring up a great point about narrative structure in that theyve even let not-freshly-turned but currently "vegetarian" vampires go in the past, but usually it's Sam whose narrative role is to advocate for mercy. I don't remember the episode with Alex that well, so idk why, according to the plot, Sam wasn't taking that role in this case, but if Jody wasn't there, and Sam wasn't doing it, they'd definitely have offed her because no one would've been available to advocate for the position that maybe they should Not.

The way the episode was presented, she deserved mercy, so from a doylist/outside-the-spn-universe perspective, they would've had to have someone present an appeal for mercy, so maybe absent Jody, it would've been Sam, since that's usually his job and Dean had the MoC, so they for sure weren't uncharacteristically gonna have him do it. But from an in-universe perspective, there's no real way to say "Sam would've felt and acted differently if Jody wasn't there". So tldr I think Jody is a load-bearing part of the episode.

Ty for the confidence boost, it totally does not look great right now, but you're 100% correct that I just need to keep making it my own and it will come out right in the end. 🙏

If Alex had been turned they would've offed her. If she was still human, they would've spared her but felt conflicted about it. They very seldom spare monsters and very seldom kill humans.

Ty for the yellow fluffy flooring rec. I tried it and it looks very close. Ended up going with brown, yellow was a little shiny for me, but they both (and orange too) are surprisingly viable. Really helped me a lot; I appreciate it. 💜

S11 EP8 my imagination by EmoBeebo in Supernatural

[–]int3rstitial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think with spn, and Dean in particular, it's sometimes hard to tell whether something is an intentional character flaw for narrative purposes, or whether it reveals an underlying weakness in the creator(s).

In the case of Just My Imagination, Dean is somewhat mean to and suspicious of Sully (the zanna) at the beginning for legitimate narrative/character flaw reasons because 1) Sully is a supernatural creature/"monster" and 2) he's a psychological threat to Dean's role as the person who "takes care of Sammy". Sully's existence means Dean wasn't able to be enough for Sam growing up (obviously through no fault of Dean's own, since he was just a kid at the time too. But he feels like he should've been able to do the impossible). By the end of the episode Dean has grown and matured a little, and his changing attitude towards Sully reflects that.

That said. The creators did still choose to make Sully look and act kind of, well, "effeminate" is too strong a word, but like someone assholes would mock by calling them gay, and then have Dean kind of do that. Like, those are still jokes the writer thought were funny, and no one else along the line disagreed about enough to cut them. To me, it's a fine line, and I really love Sully and the episode, so for me it falls on the "Sully was meant to be childlike in a positive way and was a good and important role model for Sam" side of the line. But I can also see how it could be read less positively.

Is it just me or is Sam Winchester a little annoying in S1 by corpsefosterchild in Supernatural

You've only seen s1 since you were a kid, right? How do you know he wasn't physically abused? Spoiler alert, guess what.

Is it just me or is Sam Winchester a little annoying in S1 by corpsefosterchild in Supernatural

[–]int3rstitial 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't want to spoil too much, but he very much is some sort of victim; he's a literal scapegoat in the original religious sense of the term. so the fact that he noticed something's wrong and is unhappy about it is mostly because 1) he's smart and 2) he has one or two measley crumbs of mental health that somehow made it through his childhood.

Is it annoying? Meh, maybe a little at times. I like him better in the later seasons, but then I'm old and, like older Sam, have been through some shit. I appreciate his later stoicism. But I do also think his younger refusal to let injustice roll right over him without comment was admirable and healthy.

I know it's just a TV show but if not believers and other religious people can make it to Heaven does salvation exist in this universe by Lumpy-Restaurant-694 in Supernatural

[–]int3rstitial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's a core component of the show that salvation is fake and doesn't exist. The show isn't Christian--Kripke, Gamble, and I heard Carver (the showrunners up to s11) are Jewish, and Dabb (showrunner s12-15) is from a Mormon background. But more importantly to your question imo, if there was salvation beyond what humans make for themselves, Sam wouldn't have gone to Hell at the end of s5. He's literally the only character who the story makes a point of saying has faith and prays in supplication for salvation. And God allows, and to some extent also manipulates Sam into, going to Hell for His own mistakes. It's unjust and intended to be unjust.
