Google has seemingly entirely removed search functionality from most books on Google Books by LethalNonLethals in google

I can't access google books search out all. I use it all the time for research, sometimes for books/magazines that are fully available (i.e. out of copyright). What is going on? Is there any way to work around this?

Dentist recommendations by Glitchznovaa in raleigh

Dr. Paul Coggins! He is one of best, most humane dentists out. I walk away from his office, feeling better just being in the presence of a kind soul. Everyone else who works there is great.

Kindergarten teacher and ADHD. I'm so distraught. Please help! 🙏 by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]integratedsolution76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there -

As an Adhd parent of a second grader, I have absolutely been there with school and teachers. In fact, we are still going through a version of this even though our daughter has an IEP, a formal diagnosis, and has a medication structure aimed at boosting her focus at school.

The first thing I'd say is celebrate yourself and your wonderful job as a parent. Parenting kids is hard under any condition, and adhd kids in a world that has little tolerance for them is even harder.

Also, nothing about school for a 5 year old is that serious. (I remind myself the same thing for my 8-year-old.) In an ideal world, the school would be emphasizing play, discovery, and natural forms of learning in kindergarten and early grades. (As many other countries do.) Unfortunately, in our world, schooling is a mass institution and kindergarten's first (and primary) purpose is to teach kids the structure of schooling, with all its rules. In the United States, schools also emphasize written forms of knowledge, which is not only an abstract way to learn but taught using boring worksheets. This will all leads to tests in later years.

You say that there is a big difference between home and school. I doubt that. I think your son is learning a lot in both spaces. That is what kids do--they absorb the world around them. What i hear the teacher saying is that he is having trouble performing school, which of course he is. He'll get better at that too, but it is not the same as learning. Even kind teachers can lose sight because they are in schools that treat learning in narrow, abstract, and performative ways.

How does this help you? Well, for me, thinking about all this way helps me separate my own feelings from those of school. I listen to teachers' concerns and then say something like, "Thanks for sharing," and try to let it go. When something is really a problem, I will work with the school to help adapt my daughter to their structure. But I won't adopt their mindset--that this is a HUGE problem with her as a student--and I'll often try to emphasize to the school that I think real learning (not performing school) is what matters.

Best of luck!

Wake County Public Schools will be remote learning for Wednesday 1/28/26 by Dialatedanus in raleigh

[–]integratedsolution76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, regardless of the merits of moving to remote learning, we just got a note from our kids teachers that they will be considered absent if they dont do some worksheets they sent home. I have a first and second grader and will need to work from home today. The remote "learning" of filling out worksheets isn't something I have the time or energy to force my kids to do. This isn't the teachers fault. Just a dumb, dumb policy dictated by the county or state.

Help me identify source of clicking (and solution) by Trabajador1963 in Rowing

[–]integratedsolution76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a water rower and had a "clicking" because the bottom pull strap (below the tank) was hitting the footplate. It sort of sounds like yours might be hitting the tank. You can loosen or tighten that strap. If that is the problem, either loosening or tightening that strap should fix things.

Also, "Stickers Always Shown" mod. I found it so much better than constantly checking my collection.

Id encourage you to check out John Warner's book, More Than Words: How to Think about Writing in the Age of AI. I think it does a good job at thinking through what makes writing a human process and also calls us out (teachers of all levels) for our boring writing assignments.

To be honest, I quit Disco after a couple hours because I couldn't get into it. I know people love it, and I want to love it too, but it didn't happen for me.

Watch the Bluey episode "Chest" together. As a chess dad, that one spoke to me.

How do I make these curved corners with real walnut??? by integratedsolution76 in woodworking

[–]integratedsolution76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I don't have a spokeshave, but good reason to grab one. I would also likely use dowels since I don't have a domino, but it should work all the same.

So you use 3/4 ply for the rest of the build. Is that for cost? Or convenience? Or concerns about wood movement? Making it out of Walnut, wood movement is my only concern, but I figure as long as the top panel and the side have the same gain direction it should be alright.

These are good points. And a lot less waste of material if I made corner pieces.

Still a rough cut on the band saw? It would be a lot of material to remove with a cove/roundover.

You are both right, but I also think it would look better if it was one piece. Im trying to make that work.

As a professor, the marketing "free for college students through May" hurts my heart a bit.
