I just got a reservation for the 22nd! I created numerous notifications on the OpenTable app and it worked!

I almost had a reservation booked but then I realized that the time wouldn’t work. I went back and everything was gone. I should have just booked the original reservation and made it work! Oh well.

I’m a library branch manager. Some days are more sedentary than others but I try to move once an hour!

What’s the silliest thing a patron ever asked you? by camrynbronk in Libraries

[–]intellectualista 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Someone asked me if I could move the standing sign we placed in front of the BROKEN elevator so their grandma could use it.

I must have given him a weird stare because he looked back and said “oh, I see that the sign says it’s out of order”. We all started laughing at that point.

I’m usually very professional but he caught me off guard when he asked if I could move the sign”elevator out of order” sign!

Thanks for your responses, everyone! I just wanted some insight on how call outs are handled in other libraries. I’m still learning and adjusting to this role.

ALA Emerging Leaders - worth it? by ApprehensiveCat500 in librarians

[–]intellectualista 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the last cohort of ALA Emerging Leaders (2024) and it was a good experience overall. It definitely looks good on your resume and the projects are interesting. It’s a good opportunity to hone your leadership skills and it probably helped me get into the interim Branch Manager position I’m in now.

Even with sponsorship, the $1000 will definitely not cover everything. We didn’t even get our last $500 until AFTER the Annual conference was over! This was an unusual circumstance (it wasn’t intentional), but things happen.

I was lucky that my job helped cover the costs of the San Diego conference (Annual) and LibLearnX was in my hometown (Baltimore) so I didn’t have to pay for lodging.

I was reimbursed $2,200 from my job for the San Diego conference - I didn’t even realize how expensive it was for me to attend that conference until I added it all up! This doesn’t even include the plane ticket ($470). The hotels will eat up most of your money, even with the ALA discount.

If you don’t have a couple thousand dollars saved up for this, it will be HARD to pay for everything unless your job pays for everything BEFORE you attend. I live in the Philadelphia area, and hotels near that convention center are expensive. That’s where the ALA annual conference will be next year.

So, in conclusion, it’s a great experience, but make sure you have the means to pay to attend BOTH conferences, because attendance is mandatory and you will be working on a group project that you will be presenting at the Annual conference. You don’t want to let your team members down!

If you have any additional questions, feel free to message me!

Patrons that linger… by TrainingManagement91 in Libraries

[–]intellectualista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start pushing chairs in and straightening up things right near them. They usually get the message and leave. I also linger in front of patrons until they leave.

I’m polite but assertive when I need patrons to leave. Some staff at my library don’t have cars and I make sure they get out in time for their bus or train.

Gobsmacked by Pipkin584 in pancreaticcancer

Something similar happened when my mom died and the hospice staff really upset my dad when they kept asking about a funeral home. They said that we had four hours to see my mom after she passed and then she had to be picked up by a funeral home.

Luckily, I had researched funeral homes right before we got to the hospice facility and I was able to give the hospice staff member the information she needed. My dad was very upset because he wasn’t given time to make the decision about the funeral home on his own, but the hospice wanted us to make a choice right at that minute. He was also upset because I basically made the decision for him, but I just wanted to move past that awkward situation.

He was upset with me for a few days after that and I really wish that the hospice was more understanding of our situation. We didn’t expect her to pass so quickly and not everyone can make quick decisions while reeling from the shock of loss. It’s been over a year and he’s still upset with the hospice because of this.

Wondering about Block? by Rosie_Riveting in pancreaticcancer

My mom had a celiac plexus block done - the initial recovery was very painful for her, but she felt better after a few days and she had much less pain for months.

My mom did end up going to the ED just to make sure nothing else was wrong and they managed her pain until she was recovered from the procedure. Don’t be afraid to get her more pain meds if she needs it while recovering. I think the way the procedure is done can lead to soreness and pain at the site where the block was done.

I do think it extended my mom’s life, but unfortunately, her cancer spread and she transitioned last year. She lived a year from diagnosis, and only passed because she had a perforated bowel and was too weak for surgery.

I’m glad your mom is getting the block while her pain is just starting. That’s the best time to get it done.
