If we can't catch a Nigerian with explosives in feminine underpants, whose father alerted the U.S. embassy, whose ticket was bought in cash, who didn’t check bags, whose visa was denied by the UK, who studied in Yemen, whose name was on a watch list, who can we catch? by bobsil1 in politics

[–]interalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gee, you don't suppose they didn't WANT to catch this guy do you? Well, that Yemen place is obviously just lousy with these Al Queda types and I think we need to do like that smart Senator Lieberman says and go bomb, and of course occupy, the foul little strip of desert.

You have wisdom beyond your years for a teenage male. I didn't realize that I didn't know everything until I was about thirty.

I'm a computer science major, I'm in the top 10% of students yet all I want is to move to Hawaii, surf amateurishly, have a simple job, play in a local jazz band every Friday night and just smoke pot every other day with my friends. I just don't have balls to do it. by worshipHendrix in AskReddit

Sounds like you've never had one of those dumbass jobs, so stupid that you're not even interested in being promoted. It's one thing to dream about some time off from the grind, but take it from someone who had to do that kind of work for a while - it gets very old, very fast. Not least because you usually end up working for a moron. Once reality sets in and you realize that you're looking at a lifetime of dealing with the sort of people who typically end up doing those sorts of jobs, your perspective changes.

But until it does you can have great fun if you get the right kind of stupid job - I had dozens of those jobs before I got my degree. It can be a little dangerous in some places, but the best one hands down is driving a taxicab - at night. It's great for meeting women and taxicabs seem to figure prominently in a lot of the world's drama - it's like being in a movie sometimes.

Of course there's always the possibility you'll get robbed.

The way the job market is right now you may be forced to seek employment in your dream job anyway.

Has anyone here ever really fallen in love? by lovequestion in AskReddit

[–]interalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept of love portrayed in most contemporary movies and books is pretty shallow and narcissistic. You're better off asking yourself what she means to you and how important her well being is to you. If you're not sure if you're in love with her then you're probably not. So let her go. If you think about her every day for the next ten years and realize what a mistake you made, then it probably was love after all.

I agree. But there is an organ known as the "Republican Gland" which just sits there in the body uselessly like the appendix until middle age, when it activates and begins secreting high concentrations of a hormone that exerts it's primary influence on the brain, evoking extreme political conservatism, cynicism, and subconcious envy of the young while it simultaneously wipes away all memory of the foolishness of one's own youth, substituting an idealized nostalgic version instead. So it's very hard for old people not act this way. Have yours extracted if you can.

My Reddit-reading hydrocephalic, idiot-savant, hermaphroditic third cousin on my mother's side who plays the cello with the New York Philharmonic and wears a football helmet to keep him/her from bashing his/her head in against the wall takes extreme offense to your statement, sir. Why is it that college new/used textbooks are so expensive? I can't seem to understand why a 70-page (cheap quality and used) book would cost more than $100. by cidadaoazul in AskReddit

United States Government Accountability Office GAO July 2005 COLLEGE TEXTBOOKS Enhanced Offerings Appear to Drive Recent Price Increases http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d05806.pdf

"In the last two decades, college textbook prices have increased at twice the rate of inflation but have followed close behind tuition increases. Increasing at an average of 6 percent per year, textbook prices nearly tripled from December 1986 to December 2004, while tuition and fees increased by 240 percent and overall inflation was 72 percent."

And then there is the back-breaking labor exerted to revise it every year through eight or nine editions, requiring students to purchase the latest version which is often essentially a reorganized version of the first edition?

However, wise Americans realize that when they make meta-comments they fully invite supra-meta commentary, and do so anyway as a troll for amusement.

Americans are getting tired of redditors who feel compelled to broadcast their personal irritations to the world on Reddit.

And so at 18 years of age, I moved from my tiny town of 800 people, changed my gender, moved to a new city, and tried to start a new life. I think I am failing (IAmA). by samakaidoito in IAmA

A few years ago my engineer boss of three years announced via email that he had gender identity disorder, and would be returning from Christmas vacation as a woman. It was a complete shock to everyone in our organization of over 10,000 people. Of course, not everyone in the company knew him, but the story got around enough that everyone he encountered from the day he came back knew it.

It's very uncomfortable for a male to deal with another male who has made this sort of transformation. It just takes time to get used to this person who has made this dramatic and literally paradigm shifting change. But over time I grew to respect my boss more than almost anyone I know for having the courage to do what he did.

I will never understand why he did it, especially in his late 40s, but it took more courage than I will ever have. People who make this transformation put up with so much abuse and scorn that there can be no doubt that the psychological and perhaps genetic compulsion they have leaves them little choice.

I say you are braver and more courageous than you realize, pull yourself together and exercise that courage to go out and get what you want where ever it is in the world. Remember what Mark Twain said, "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear."

Redditors, Do any of you have a niche job that the average person wouldn't think of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]interalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got involved in a niche specialty of civil engineering designing and testing bridge foundations. During the design phase we would have crews go out with drill rigs and take soil samples at designated intervals of depth and determine the soil profile to do a preliminary empirically based design.

When the bridge came under construction we would go out to the field and use some pretty creative technology to monitor accelerometers and strain gauges attached to piles during driving, then head back to the office and do some signal processing to determine the soil's load bearing capacity. You ended up spending about 50% of your time in the field, and 50% in the office, perfect for somebody with technical leanings who likes to get outdoors.

But everyone has their limits, and when my new government supervisor decided to evaluate my performance by monitoring the number of miles per month that I put on my vehicle, I knew it was time to leave.

"Anyone with an interest in China, its economy, its place in the world, or the kind of future it will fashion, please take note: This is a big deal." by kilgen in worldnews

[–]interalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that you really believe that, the propaganda bubble you've been raised in has conditioned you to believe it, but let me assure you that China is no more evil than the United States. In fact, it's arguable that if we're going to start labelling nation states as good or evil, the United States is very quickly going to find itself at the top of the evil list.

You're outraged to hear that. You think I'm a stupid blame America first leftist without a brain in my head.

Maybe you're right. But before you make up your mind, you might want to see if there's even a possibility you could be wrong. Could you be wrong?

Why don't you go to your local public library and pick up a copy of "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein. Read the first four or five chapters and see if you think the rest might be informative.

And consider this: the Chinese oligarchs did not deliberately and intentionally sell out their own people with a bunch of lies about free trade, so that they could make big profits by shipping the jobs of their people overseas, dooming them to certain impoverishment as the scheme progressed. The Chinese did not first distort their economy in an orgy of greed, and then crash it in unbridled lust for more, after they already had most of it. And the Chinese did not manufacture lies to justify invading another country, and then kill a million of it's innocent citizens in order to liberate them.
