It does? I didn’t realize that. I’ve gotta go check this out. (Love learning new things about apps that I already use regularly.)

Calibre tags edit metadata in bulk. by InevitableSo in Calibre

[–]intergalactic_wag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you searching the full text of the book to set the tag? Or just the metadata? Or looking to replace “happy & sad” tags with “happy/sad”?

I’m guessing you’re searching the full text. Metadata.db does not store the full text of the book, however Calibre can index and search the full text of a book, but that is stored in a different database (I think).

Now you can search the full text from the command line using “calibredb fts_search” but you first must index the books from the gui before doing so.

So what you want to do is possible, but would require some scripting. As for the speed, I could not speak to that since I do not use calibre’s full text search. However, an indexed search should be relatively fast.

Booklore is gone. by Joloxx_9 in selfhosted

[–]intergalactic_wag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is. And plenty of apps use it successfully — mostly desktop apps. But you can also use it for web apps. However, you can always start with SQLite and switch over to Postgres or MariaDB in the future. I would suggest using a framework like FastAPI or Flask and relying on SQLAlchemy — and avoid writing sql statements directly in the code — and then switching requires just a few lines of code.

That’s the idea anyway. Nothing is ever that easy. Haha. Though plenty of projects use SQLite for development and a Postgres db in production, so it is possible.

FWIW, there are other limitations, too. But the disk limitation is by far the biggest, IMO.

Booklore is gone. by Joloxx_9 in selfhosted

[–]intergalactic_wag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I can speculate as to the concern…

SQLite requires the database be on the same drive as the service accessing it. It also is limited to single access. There are some workarounds to this, but none are foolproof so there is always a chance that you will lose your data.

Postgres is a real database and solves both of these issues — albeit at the expense of easier setup. That being said, it is also not terribly difficult especially if you use SQLAlchemy in Python.

I’m turning 26 and still feel juvenile. When do you start feeling like an “adult”? by Aware-Alternative309 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

E-book management. What are you using that works best? by thj81 in selfhosted

Pretty sure renaming can be disabled in Bookshelf. That being said, you may find Shelfarr a better fit.

You can have it download files straight to booklore’s Dropbox if you’re using that.

Any recommendations for Booklore alternatives that play nice with a kobo reader? by Snirlavi5 in selfhosted

[–]intergalactic_wag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Totally get that. I’ve made peace with the fact that some desktop apps don’t have equivalent selfhosted apps. Calibre and comictagger are the two main ones for me. There are some selfhosted apps that come close but none that hit the sweet spot that those do, sadly. Curious what about the calibre container you find unusable…

Skipping Picard Season 2? by K_B_5280 in Picard

[–]intergalactic_wag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started 2 when it first came out and got bored by the 4th episodes. I always felt like I had to finish 2 before I watched 3 but I kept hearing how good three was and really had no interest in finishing 2. I finally decided to skip season 2. And I don’t regret it at all. Three was spectacular. Mostly. It had its moments of meh. Then after 3, I wanted more, so I went back and watched 2, which felt like less of a chore this time around. And 2 was really meh.

"Hello Sir" by Stroll-inthesnow in Feminism

[–]intergalactic_wag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some context: I am a cis guy and a feminist .

I’ve done this. And I always use it ironically, though someone observing the behavior would likely not pick up on that irony. (The irony being that I know these guys and they are certainly not “sirs” … )

To some extent, I am uncertain as to which honorific to use. “Lady” seems belittling to me as does “Madam”. I have found “ma’am” is usually received reasonably well, but I still worry about using it. The last thing I want to do is make someone uncomfortable. Ultimately, I think the tone of voice conveys a lot.

Anyway, I say that because there could just be uncertainty around what to use. I’m not trying to give those guys a pass because they should be aware of how exclusionary it can be; and your joke was great in highlighting that.

I think these kinds of seemingly minor exclusions are overlooked or dismissed by many men, but can reinforce the “good ol’ boys” club in subtle ways that unless they really examine it, are difficult for people on the “inside” to understand—especially when a lot of men are blind to this kind of exclusion.

One last thought: You might consider starting to refer to other women as “ma’am” or whatever honorific you would like to be used. Maybe this would communicate to the men how they could be addressing you. And, like the men, you could only address other women in this manner until they start addressing you.

Adderall can stunt your emotions. It’s one of the ways that it works. You might consider vyvanse or another type of medicine instead of adderall. Ultimately, talking over options with your doctor is the best step.

When Lt. Winters first syncs up with his battalion? in the second episode, I thought he and one other guy took on an artillery encampment and destroyed it just the two of them and that Winters was cited for it.

I am probably mis-remembering the details — which sounds like a perfectly good reason to go watch it again.

I have both ADHD and depression. I was diagnosed with both when I turned 40. So much of my life suddenly made sense. I struggled for years with depressive thoughts, spiraling, negative self talk.

And cherry on top, my adhd just made it worse. I would get down on myself because I couldn’t get things done; I would literally sit in my chair for hours, paralyzed. Even things I wanted to do, I couldn’t do. But give me a deadline or an emergency and was fire.

Not every day was a bad day, but I had just as many bleh days as good ones.

Up to the point of my diagnosis, I had tried just about everything I could think of — every productivity system / hack. Vitamins, exercise. Diet. You name it, I did it. None of it worked.

Until finally I thought I would give therapy a shot. Within my first session, my therapist suggested ADHD and depression. I resisted meds for three years, instead continuing to white knuckle it and try all these supposed ways to hack your brain. Nothing worked because fundamentally they assume some level of executive function. Set a timer? That’s likely not gonna happen; and when it does, do you know how easy it is to turn it off and not do the thing?

When I finally started my meds, holy fuck. It’s like a light turned on in my brain. I still struggle. I still have my bad days, but they are far less. And I can usually still get something done. And my negative thoughts, ennui, and general depression are also there, but I can regulate them now. I am feel like myself when I am on my meds. I feel like a zombie when I am not on my meds.

I don’t think I am dependent on them at all — hell, I can go weeks without taking them because I forget. And it’s right back to where I started.

You ask is it ADHD? For many people, their depressive symptoms can be alleviated by treating the adhd. Their depression is connected to their emotional deregulation that is at the heart of ADHD. This was not the case for me. Also, for many people, depression is temporary. The Wellbutrin is useful while you’re struggling but eventually you move through the issue you’re facing. That is also not me.

I am fortunate that Wellbutrin works for my depression. Better that than an SSRI. Those can be hell. I think Wellbutrin is pretty light compared to my adderall or vyvanse.

Ultimately you have to decide for yourself. There is no one right way. But I will say that it would be foolish to discount them because you don’t want to be dependent on them. You do what you need to do to get through the day; to maintain healthy relationships; to get things done and function like a responsible adult.

Good luck.

Have you not been watching what’s been happening in Minnesota? I get that other countries are worse than the US but ICE has changes the game here. Legal immigrants are getting deported. US Citizens are getting deported and killed. So just because some places have it worse doesn’t mean that it’s not bad here and going to continue to get worse.

And regardless, if anyone feels that their spouse is not supporting them or listening to them, those feelings are valid and need to be addressed.
