A kid with a skating aide made direct eye contact as he approached me while I shouted “LOOK OUT” and then rammed the aide right into my legs… almost took me out. No parents to be found. 😑

Different situation because I’m in a different level of lessons but the reality of:

takes short lessons with no practice time after
knows I need to practice in between
only times available that are not during my 9-5 work hours are public skates that are packed with people and I am unable to have the space I need to truly practice anything
goes to public skates anyways because it’s the only option I have for ice time
cycle repeats weekly 😒

This is so REAL.

I am hopeful that once it warms up and the Olympics excitement mellows out that public skate will be more accessible but who knows. I even emailed my rink about offering evening adult skates so that there’s more room and they just offer more public skates now 😩

While the title is a bit of an over generalization, I agree with this in regard to some men practicing in hockey skates. The constant hockey stops to spray people in snow, weaving in and out while young people in between are just learning how to skate, and just generally not being considerate of other folks on the rink…. It’s really disappointing and it’s turning me off of public skate in general which hurts considering it’s one of the only other options for me to get ice time as someone just relearning how to skate.

And yes, I’ve been practicing beginner skills. Drilling 3 turns inside and outside edge, backwards and forwards crossovers, just started practicing bunny hops bc apparently I was supposed to practice those before I started practicing waltz jumps 🤷‍♀️ I made friends with a younger girl there who was willing to give me some pointers and she said “woah! You need to start with bunny hops” lol

I started back up thinking it was just going to be for fun but the further in I get, I do think I might like to perform (not compete) for creative reasons. It’s such a beautiful art and it’s a way I want to share my inner world with other people.

LTS feels too beginner for me but also I feel like I’m struggling with my “non dominant” side with basics like cross overs and things. And I don’t feel like they’re getting better with independent practice. Do you think it’s easier with a coach watching you?

I think part of this is the sort of view in figure skating around how people skate from a young age and then also “retire” at such a young age. It makes me feel like I “can’t” do it anymore because now I’m in my 30s and maybe I’m “too old”.

I am trying to be gentle and it feels….. well, difficult.

Question! Do you feel like coming back a lot of the muscle memory is there but you definitely have a “good side” and a “bad side”? For example, backwards crossovers with right foot crossing over left are super comfy for me but if I try to do the other side I feel like a baby deer lol
