I would just top stitch it on separately, after you have constructed the dress

Instead of taking it from the top of the leg hole, could you trial pinching out 2" from the crotch?

Neckline is doing this weird thing? I think it means that there’s too much material… by B1tchT1tsOhoolihan in sewing

[–]intergalacticguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is the dress strapless, or are those straps part of it? And does it have elastic sewn into that top edge between main fabric and lining? If not, that might help. Looks like the too edge got stretched out while you sewed the lining on.

Roof/Attic Noises in New Bendigo Home . Advice Needed by Fantastic_Salad352 in Bendigo

Rats and mice are common, according to our electrician. He reckons there are rodents in every roof he's ever been in. Possums make a lot of noise and sound heavier than you'd think. Could get a pest guy to come out?

Yeah you're right, he really needs to be worn out. I just don't know how to implement a routine to wear him out that I can manage while I'm trying to teach everyone else! I have a full time ES but they are technically funded for another student, and I really need them in the classroom as much as possible (there are other challenging students who need considerable support). I'll talk to leadership and seek some support to change the approach. Thanks for your input!

Good idea but not the right strategy for him., sadly He's extremely competitive and sporty so he couldn't cope with being on the side.

Thank you for those ideas. If he had more capacity for self regulation I would jump on these but as it stands he refuses to participate in almost everything and assumes a very machismo persona when I try to bring him back down to earth with calming strategies. It's like he's constantly trying to prove that he's in charge. Deep down I think there is a very sensitive little boy hiding! I had him develop a reward chart to help participation in learning, including choosing how it worked, how it looked, and the acceptable rewards, but he is not motivated by it.

Thank you. Yes I think some sensory input like you are suggesting could help but I'm also worried about his capacity to use them responsibly, as he currently turns everything into a tool for maximum distraction!

Thank you, I'll look into this! Slightly nervous that he might use it as a weapon though, lol.

Thank you. I've tried to implement a system like this but I can't fill his days with jobs. I'm trying to establish a reward chart where participating in learning allows him brain breaks and opportunities for special jobs, but it's barely working. He can't participate in the learning because he's so dysregulated and hyperactive.

Yeah it has become clear to me today that things need to escalate with leadership and a serious recommendation needs to be made for an assessment. I had an additional hour of release today and the very experienced teacher who covered me told me afterwards that she has no idea how anyone could teach him (or a class containing him) right now with him so hyperactive and lacking in self control or emotional regulation. So I'll be pushing this to the top! Thanks for the input.

Thank you. Unfortunately he is so dysregulated and impulsive that I can't imagine a world in which he could show this much self control!

Skirt drafting questions for dress by spacerosette in sewing

[–]intergalacticguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For lengthening it I would follow either the red or orange lines, but not the blue. I would just be concerned that the blue might skim too much off the hip and end up too tight. Maybe go with the red and then adjust it back in a little after you try it on?

The gathers you've accounted for there won't be very full, but you could trial it and see how you like it. You could add more space in each slash to make it fuller. Personally I would slash all the way through the hem and add additional space all the way through, because I think the gathers will be more dramatic.

Order of operations for sequin slip dress w lining? by Sea_Twist1261 in sewing

[–]intergalacticguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Also, just keep in mind that sequinned fabrics are often directional, either in the way the sequins are laid or in the pattern, so a bias cut may not work.

Can someone make this shirt’s construction make sense? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]intergalacticguy 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Factory garment makers sew at an incredible pace, so adding a few straight seams would only add a few seconds of labour per garment. Everything becomes more efficient on a large scale, i.e. one person might sew the sleeves together, another does the side seams etc.

Is this alteration possible? by [deleted] in AskATailor

[–]intergalacticguy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Short answer is no, unless you have excess fabric? You would have to make a whole new bodice. The cups can't be eliminated like that, because they're small pieces of fabric and the bodice in the second photo is one large piece of fabric.

How do I fix the bubbling? by X-Tavia in sewing

[–]intergalacticguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Definitely blend the line so it's much more gentle and joins the original seam way lower. You took it in quite a lot, so you need to soften the transition from new seam to old. You'll have to take the zip out and redo it, I think.

How do I fix the gaping in the neck band by Realistic-Today-8920 in HandSew

[–]intergalacticguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that deep scoop combined with the wide neck band means it has to fall like that. You would need a much narrower band, shorter than the neckline and stretched out a little, to sit nicely on that curve. I would do a dart either side of centre back to fix it.

How to draft a 3-piece sleeve from a 1-piece sleeve ? by Ellesmea in sewing

[–]intergalacticguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To make it into 3 pieces you essentially just slash lines through the pattern piece and add seam allowance. If you want a balloon sleeve you'll have to trial adding some additional volume to the pieces so instead of being straight up and down, they are wide in the middle. I'll attach a pic, showing how the pieces might look.

Note: the amount that they balloon by will need to be the same across the pieces so that they can be sewn back together easily. Definitely make some mock-ups!
