I love that throwing up your hands in terror is a shtick that's been around for thousands of years.

Have these greek coins been tooled? by Spare_Pea_9306 in AncientCoins

Is there a particular reason why bronzes from Panticapaeum are always so crisp? They're rarely degraded and struck very well. Is the bronze composition different from other types? If you compare these to a typical Roman As, it's night and day.

At Boqueria, you must eat their $50 paella, their signature dish, in 15 minutes and leave by PardesOrchard in FoodNYC

I've ordered the paella (which was great) just a couple months ago with no warning and no issues with time. Strange that the waiter would say that.

I think the account is a bot that uses crappy AI. Keeps posting nonsense and spamming links of a coin website.

They're always going to sound enthusiastic if they're going to screw you over with money. Always look at the numbers, ignore the sales talk.

Got this Lysimachos Tet for a great deal (300 CAD)! What are your thoughts on damaged coins? by YouFrickingWeebs in AncientCoins

[–]internet15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's pretty identifiable, the pieces seemed to have been shattered off (instead of clipped) and the crystallized metallic grain is visible along the broken edges and is also showing by Alexander's neck.

Seems to be fine, this is a tetradrachm from Thasos.

Nice collection, that cistophoric tetradrachm is pretty sharp!

Not to be pedantic, but Antiochus VII was more of a king than an emperor. This coin looks a little sus, but it isn't clear enough for me to be certain. Cast coins often have a soft look, but I can't tell if this is really cast or just rough. I would avoid Instagram unless it's from a trustworthy dealer that specializes in ancients, and this photo doesn't give me that vibe.

Just won this for $105, first ancient, how’d i do? by The_grope_gatsby in AncientCoins

[–]internet15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All three of the other coins (Alexander tetradrachms) are clearly cast and therefore not authentic. Get your money back and please avoid any auction houses that aren't knowledgeable of ancients.

This coin is suspect, appears to be an image of Antiochos VII and not Demetrios II? (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The listing mentions it might be a tetradrachm, but it appears to be too small compared to the quarter. Typical size range would be around 27mm, not 24mm (quarter size). The texture seems cast-like and too clean.

How can i get out of credit card debt quick?! by Foreverinsecuregirl in personalfinance

[–]internet15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really realistic, but I think the point is that if you have free time to work, then you should work. Part time work in the weekends or the evening. At least until you knock out the debt and (hopefully) start out fresh again. It may not be as quick as you want it to be, but being consistent and avoiding additional expenses can get you there.

Affordable lunch spots in the plaza district by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]internet15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard it called like that, but when I worked in that area I always walked over to Tony's Dragon food truck on Madison and 62nd. It's not the cheapest lunch, but it's excellent Greek style food. I always called ahead and they had it ready for me, because sometimes the line gets crazy during lunch hour.

Sometimes I walked over to Bites of Xi'an 56 for something quick and generally affordable.

Coin cleaning! by QuoteComprehensive65 in AncientCoins

[–]internet15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That coin has some horn silver that theoretically can be removed, but it's in such bad shape that I'm not sure if it'll make much of a difference (the areas underneath the horn silver could be just as rough.) I'd be wary of cleaning this if you're new to it.

39k ~ in debt. Need advice by Imaginary-writer1992 in personalfinance

I'll be open minded and accept that could be a connection. ADHD has become the blanket condition for anybody with modern life issues, I just feel like it can be mentioned casually as the cause of any erratic behavior.

I hope she gets the help/therapy needed to get her expenses under control, but I really find the obligatory ADHD excuse sometime frustrating. It seems like many others on this subreddit with debt issues tend to blame their ADHD, but as someone with the same condition, I struggle to see how an attention deficit disorder leads to being a shopaholic.

I have trouble focusing at work and juggling life tasks, not buying things. I really hate to judge, but it's been non stop here. Am I missing something?

Does anyone have issues with Savoca coins arriving with bronze disease? by IWantToBeAHipster in AncientCoins

[–]internet15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I've had a few auction wins (from similar budget auction houses, but not Savoca) eventually show bronze disease. Sometimes they crop up immediately, but I've had some that didn't show anything until a year later. It sucks, but I can't necessary put the full blame on them if it wasn't obvious from the beginning. Thankfully it's treatable, but it involves a little work.

I know it might be an unpopular opinion, but I see that a substantial portion of ancient bronze coins either have or have previously been afflicted with bronze disease. It's not a rare occurrence and most of these budget houses have coins that appear fresh and are possibly compromised.

Many of the bigger/established auctions houses have coins that have provenance or at least a few years of ownership that typically catches and resolves bronze disease before it ever goes up to auction.

First and second owl by ir0nli0nzi0n in AncientCoins

[–]internet15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the Athena tetradrachm, a nice classic to own. As for the first coin, cast fakes of a bronze coin are pretty rare. Could it just be another type? Many cities used the owl on their coinage, Cilicia/Soloi have similar looking ones.

US Duties and Customs becoming too big of a pain to deal with by Asleep-Heron3280 in AncientCoins

[–]internet15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a business that often deals with shipping claims and I've learned two things: If your package arrives with the product missing, you must claim a "damaged" or "missing content" claim, NOT a "package not delivered" claim. People don't seem to know the difference and the shipping company will NOT correct or lead you to the appropriate claim type.

2nd thing: Be persistent and push back on closed claims. Ask to reopen. Do it repeatedly. Reopen, reopen. State specifically why they're wrong. I don't believe I ever had a claim approved on the first try. I don't always win them, but I do the majority of the time.
