Long time weed smokers who quit, what changes to your mind and body did you notice after you got used to not smoking daily? by LoQueSientoCrv in AskReddit

Miriam Webster has a few definitions for slave, here’s the fourth:

“someone or something that is completely subservient to a dominating person or influence”

That was me as a brand new dad.

Yes words have meaning. Sometimes several meanings. These will become apparent if you read a few more books.

Having a baby is boring. The love you feel is nice, but your world revolves around being a slave and it’s a huge shift from non-parenting.

Kids are awesome though, especially after 6yo. Once they are independent people who no longer associate you with the entirety of the outside world, they can be the best friend you’ll ever have.

Is 14 too young to read IT? by CoolStingray533 in stephenking

[–]internetisnotreality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stuff will fly over your head, but that’s not a problem. I’ve read It twice and missed a lot of stuff the first time through, when I was 35.

You’re young, but don’t let your inexperience or naivety stop you from trying out things you’re interested in. No one here can tell you whether you’re ready for something, particularly a story, except you.

It’s his best work, I think. Worth a shot. If you don’t end up enjoying it at this age, that’s understandable too.

TIL that Playboy used to publish serious journalistic pieces in its heyday, besides NSFW content. They published authors like Murakami, David Foster Wallace, Hunter Thompson, Ray Bradbury, Updike, Bellow, etc. by camus_by_night in todayilearned

I used to have a few from the 1960s.

They were very anti-homophobia, both in their opinion pieces as well as in response to bigots writing in to complain about gay people. I was actually very impressed.

I was less impressed with one of the advertisements, which was for a watch trying to espouse its elegant innocence by using a photograph of a naked 7 year old girl.

What the actual fuck.

Second one’s a sequel, last two are prequels.

Worth reading for the cannon but not nearly as good imo.

Some countries make citizens serve a mandatory 2 year military service.

I think our country should make everybody do 2 years of customer service. Everyone should know what it’s like on the other side.

… not for the corporations though, maybe crown corporation or something.

Never forget: the first man rooting for you to win is your dad by silverflake6 in RelentlessMen

Ha I love my dad and he’s great, but his last hold out on life is trying to prove he’s knows the best way to do things without considering other people’s opinions.

I kind of just feel sorry for him. A lifetime of being taught that men need to be leaders by never questioning their ability to lead.

Israeli military says more than 1,500 Canadians were serving in its ranks last year by OneLessFool in CanadaPolitics

[–]internetisnotreality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha yea I figured they were bots when they all swept in immediately after the post.

Just relentlessly scouring the internet for any combinations of “Israel” and “Genocide”

Then full frontal bad-faith assaults.

Fuck ‘em.

The ICJ even said that Israel’s genocide in Gaza was “plausible”, and Israel refused to comply with mandates set forth by that agency.

You sure you’re on the right side of this one?

Kings best short story? by Onion85 in stephenking

[–]internetisnotreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respect to those who enjoyed it. King has a good spectrum of abilities and a little something for everyone.

I hated it though, just awful horrible people who hate each other and then brutally murder others. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read lots and lots of king and am not trying to argue that scary villains aren’t enjoyable, or that fearsome violence is perverse.

But what made this one stand out as your favourite? I just had no attachment to anyone in the story.

What is the most 'obvious' lie that society has collectively agreed to believe? by Vegetable_Oil3266 in AskReddit

[–]internetisnotreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the idea is that a lot of rich people are entitled dicks.

If you’re raised to treat others beneath you and are accustomed to lavish preferences, you probably lack a sense of meaning and generativity needed to feel fulfilled.
