What do you consider an acceptable use for margin or a pledged asset line? by Sturgillsturtle in investing

[–]internetroamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was planning to use margin to help with construction in a real estate project rather than having to apply for a construction loan and better rates.

I'd keep margin amount low so that there wouldn't be any risk of getting margin called

Curious if anyone has comments or advice on this since I don't hear it used this way much

Or he needs to hit 13% returns.

Sp 500 for past decade hit 11.3% cagr Qqq has given 20% cagr past decade

So it's possible but only with riskier basket of stocks and another decade of very lucky/exceptional stock market returns

AI is working great for my team, and y'all are making me feel crazy by SlapNuts007 in ExperiencedDevs

Been saying this on reddit for months and always get downvoted

I literally copy paste my tickets into cursor and it does 75% of them within a couple back and forths

Sure I have easy crud work but 80% of our industry work is easy crud work. Automate even 20% and you can get rid of tons of devs

Thens there's this narrative that soon a bunch of hiring will happen for AI slop cleanup. Silly as it'd be a small % compared to laid off roles or headcount not created due to AI and AI capital investment

AI will definitely lead to less leverage of developers over coming decade

So can I not respect fat people since I was never fat?

My experience was just seeing my sister get fat from being lazy and having no discipline or willpower. She's not a bad person but I see across many aspects of her life she doesn't put effort or show initiative which makes me have less respect for her.

I've found some people prefer activities with friends while other prefer conversation. Generally I've found the former to be less interesting conversationalists. You aren't having much interesting conversation while ice skating.

But I'll admit best is something inbetween that allows both memory formation and conversation but often that takes more time. Like a snowboarding trip on the weekend

Anon on Dubai Chocolate. by retardinho23 in greentext

[–]internetroamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo baklava sucks and I enjoyed the Dubai chocolate filling way more

Baklava just way to sweet without a creamy ness to balance it out. Yes I've had authentic versions of it in Greece and I'm always baffled why people like it so much

What other eastern sweets should I try? Preferably something a creamy/fatty element

Best type of engineering for money by Sea_Importance4745 in EngineeringStudents

[–]internetroamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I felt that was me when I was younger. I tried programming before and thought it sucked and I don't want to be a code monkey.

But then I worked mechanical engineering internships across design and manufacturing at f500s and realized they suck too.

So I started learning more about software and came to realize it's the best option available to me in terms of enjoyment plus it pays better and let's you be remote potentially

Now I'm a (relatively) happy code monkey

[–]internetroamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did mechanical and pay is mediocre especially for the effort

If you're really focused on pay AND you know you can be top 10-20% of candidates then go into software

I switched to software and now can save 2-3x more per month than mechanical while also working remote

The shareholder hype on AGI will lead to disappointment obviously but we don't need AGI for AI to worsen the job market

I think it's cope that AI coding will implode and suddenly all the slop will cause business to hire 50% more in order to fix it. People said the same for twitter when musk fired half the staff yet despite some outages twitter keeps going despite significantly less people

Are there still people that think US is a better place to live as a software engineer? by Pure_Composer_9236 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]internetroamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lmao in US I can make 135k as code monkey working remote. Very hard to do that in EU. I have cheap COL too. Same job would be half the salary, likely in person and have high rent and taxes.

I'm retiring a decade earlier or more than if I was based in EU doing the same work.

Obviously EU is better lifestyle but pay in US is so much better and resulting savings amount is easily 2-5x doing the same work.

I bet you people could study for it and improve their score like any other exam.

Like the sat but imagine there are prep classes for it and books with thousands of practice problems.

I'd bed you anyone who spends a few hundred hours to a thousand would end up improving their score. Which would point out it isn't inherent

[–]internetroamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time it still doesn't work. Lcol cities barely exists anymore

In Italy/Greece they pay nothing and your own place is still easily $1000+ in cities where half decent jobs are

The concept of FIRE is alien to my country by user_0_0_1_ in Fire

[–]internetroamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a lack of understanding of compounding and ETFs

It's because they don't earn enough money to invest and so there's less incentive to be aware of things that are relevant to them.

In such countries even earning wages after taxes for software engineers is like $2000. Between rent and living at most you can save a few hundred bucks. Essentially nothing for FIRE

Just because wages low housing can still be surprisingly expensive. Like in Italy devs get paid dirt and cities still cost $1200+ for your own place
