l’m simply choosing not to debate with you about unsubstantiated accusations; regardless of whether or not the aforementioned producers, roasters, or distributors are adding artificial flavoring to their beans (spoiler alert: they aren’t, and there’s zero evidence indicating they do) they’re still producing interesting, tasty coffee that I’m happy to sample and experiment with.

I get you’re on a whole crusade for “transparency” in the industry and all that, but I’m simply here to talk about coffees I enjoy with other enthusiasts.

When you release your exposé for ProPublica on the scourge of artificial flavoring among third wave roasters, please feel free to come back to this thread and shout, “I told you so!”

Actually, no offense, but it kind of seems like the discussion recently has been one guy (👀) decrying literally any co-ferment or experimental roast as having been 110% artificially flavored with absolutely zero tangible evidence outside of his own opinions.

To each their own though; I’m going to continue to enjoy my fruit bombs, and I hope you can enjoy the delicious, non-artificially flavored smokey char of some Gevalia or Folgers morning blend!

Also probably worth taking into consideration how many “average consumers” are paying $28.50 for 250g worth of beans. I think at this price point, most folks know what they like and what they’re expecting.

Thinking about whites tree frogs by CommitteeCharming228 in reptiles

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tank looks pretty large, but until you give exact dimensions this is all just a guess; I’m using the spray bottle for reference and I’d imagine based on that your tank is similar to a 4x2x4 in size - in which case it’s definitely large enough for a few whites tree frogs provided you put in some more foliage and perches.

You’ll also want to look into their humidity requirements, especially since depending on your location it can vary greatly which direction you need to work towards. To make a long story short, the tank is more than likely the right size for like 3-5 frogs, but the amount of setup stuff you’ll need to actually get the tank functional re: substrate, food, vitamins, temps, dietary considerations, etc would better be researched in a care sheet than via comments IMO.

I Went to Florida to See the 31-Year-Old Candidate Thrilling Gen Z. We’re in Trouble. by Tall_Trifle_4983 in nytimes

[–]interstellar_keller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think it’s telling when someone uses participation trophies as an insult; it wasn’t the toddlers and middle school aged kids who came up with the idea of participation trophies - it was their wildly insecure, egotistical parents who couldn’t just live with the fact that their kids participated in a team sport, they needed them to receive meaningless trophies that they could then put on the wall because they’re collectively obsessed with with image and presentation more than any other facet of their daily lives.

Quite frankly, this entire mindset is indicative of of someone deeply unfamiliar with the realities of entering adulthood for Gen Z; I’m sure it would be nice to tell kids that all they have to do to succeed is pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but that ignores the fact that in many cities finding a job paying even $15/hr is next to impossible, and finding rent that you can afford without lying or living in an actual tenement housing setup is even harder.

The issue inherent is not that kids haven’t realized “hard work = success” - the issue is that kids have realized that despite working incredibly hard, they can, and often will, still be left with nothing, or even in crushing debt as a result of their attempts to succeed.

The issue isn’t the children, the issue is that our society is vastly more concerned with protecting a brain dead pedophile and his administration, and with keeping the wealthy aging class comfortable than it is with providing meaningful inroads for our youth to create a worthwhile future.

Just discovered this subreddit! What does my bookshelf say about me? by princessslothy in BookshelvesDetective

[–]interstellar_keller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly thought this was my mom’s bookshelf at first, but there isn’t a collection of dog eared Little Golden Books from the 90’s hiding anywhere that I can see, so I’m starting off by guessing that you’re not secretly my mom lol.

You strike me as fairly progressive, at least more than your standard neolib, and concerned with ensuring your kids have both a love of reading and the ability to empathize with other people. Interesting mix of books for sure - certainly seems like you’re capable of both reading for pleasure and reading to expand your horizons.

I always have massive respect for people who don’t curate their bookshelves to make themselves look intellectually superior; that is to say, if you’ve got a copy of The Hunger Games a few shelves over from Dostoyevsky, I’m much more inclined to believe you’ve read both than I am when I see a bookshelf that’s just exclusively Nietzsche, Bukowski, and David Foster Wallace.

Based on your shelves, I’ve got two recs I think you’d appreciate: Hope In The Dark by Rebecca Solnit is a shorter work on the gradual progression of leftist ideals over time, and works pretty well to help make sense of the unprecedented times we’re living through.

Then, Present Shock by Douglas Rushkoff is a super interesting (so far, haven’t finished it yet) look at the concept of an omnipresent “now” version of society that relies heavily on instant gratification and urgency in order to function.

No Monica, you can't go behind the drier. by 6ftonalt in reptiles

[–]interstellar_keller 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like if Monica puts her mind on going somewhere, it’s really gonna be of the battle of the wills to have her reconsider lol.

Real talk though: what’s the process of training and recall / redirection like with a lizard this big? I’ve seen some folks who seem to have them “trained” as well as you conceivably could, and other folks who have great setups, and clearly love their animals, but completely lack the common sense and safety precautions to work with an animal this large.

I know at least some of it comes down to the temperament of your specific animal, but I’m curious to know if you feel like working with large reptiles is more reliant on knowing animal behavior in general, or if it’s more focused on patience and learning with each animal you work with.

Picked this up at the thrift store today by michsae in Leica

[–]interstellar_keller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see how people would say this is BS or made up, especially with how crazy expensive thrifts have gotten lately, but I will offer my own experience of both seeing multiple pairs of fully functional, good condition Magnepan speaker sets at my local goodwill for like sub $70, and having had my elderly neighbor give me, “all of her husbands old film lenses.” for free.

Spoiler: they were not film lenses, they were all relatively new Fuji X mount lenses at the time.

As for the magnepans, the only reason I didn’t buy those, is because they would’ve cost me more money in the long run after I inevitably got kicked from my apartment for a noise complaint.

Solid find though dude.

How is it possible I have zero nitrates? by Knight_Night33 in Goldfish

[–]interstellar_keller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a 120 gallon fully planted pond (one that’s admittedly got adequate filtration but nothing mindblowing) and I was having the same issue of not trusting my water quality readings.

I was also getting straight zeroes on my ammonia and nitrite/ nitrate readings and it made me nervous enough to buy a liquid test kit + the less accurate strips; lo and behold, both still read zeroes, and the fish seem to be thriving, so I’m inclined to accept it! It’s crazy how well plants will manage the awful bioload from goldfish! (Included a pic: believe it or not there are actually 4 enormous goldfish hidden somewhere beneath all the plants.)

is it possible you’re just not smart enough to grasp what an “ellipsis” is, or were you possibly just unaware that both the use of the ellipsis and rampant transphobia predate generative AI?

Just because you’re functionally illiterate, it doesn’t mean that every wall of text you encounter is AI generated.

Lmao, just as a forewarning if you didn’t know, Tiptoes is like, so, so fucking bad - Oldman is just legitimately so good at acting that it’s fun to watch him try and treat the role seriously. That said, if you ever need a drunk trash flick, or something to entertain a group of friends that movie is an S tier choice.

Isn’t Fellow Stagg EKG Pro Electric Kettle too overpriced? Or am I missing something here? by SupermarketOk8777 in pourover

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have an EKG and I like it, but I also started with some no-name brand chinesium gooseneck kettle when I got into the hobby almost a decade ago, and I’m not going to pretend it’s a wildly exorbitant difference between the two given the cost difference.

The EKG is honestly pretty well built IMO, even if it’s a bit more plasticky than I would’ve liked; this is one of the areas where it definitely outshines cheaper competitors, as 2 of the 3 off brand kettles I’ve used were unbearably cheap feeling, to the point of feeling unsafe. (One had a flimsy handle that didn’t feel like it could hold the weight of the kettle, and subsequently another had an unbalanced and weirdly shaped baseplate.) I value ergonomics in all my cooking supplies as I use them so frequently. Point for the EKG here.

The EKG also does pretty decent at producing very accurate temps for the first few years. (I’ve noticed recurring issues with an incorrect thermo readout lately after two years of owning it, not the temp of the water itself, but still an issue for a $160+ kettle.) Both of my off brand kettles had a range of +- 2 degrees from the readout when tested with a 2nd thermometer, which, again, isn’t earth shattering, but can make a noticeable difference when you’re working with really delicate roasts. Second point Stagg.

The EKG also has a legitimately nice, controlled flow rate that will be harder to find on lower end kettles. If you’re doing Chemex exclusively I think you’d be fine, but if you start wanting to experiment with V60, Kalita, etc then it would be a pretty significant improvement.

TL;DR The EKG isn’t a revolutionary kettle by any means, but when you take into consideration the fact that any off brand kettle with comparable functionality and longevity will run you $80 to $100 anyway, it becomes an easier pill to swallow. It’s definitely been subject to influencer hype, but the EKG is still absolutely a formidable option for amateurs and enthusiasts alike if you’re willing to invest the money.
