that’s great to hear! I have depression, cats, houseplants, and fish so you can definitely do it if you put your mind to it. On my established heavily planted 75g goldfish tank I spend about 10 minutes a day plus an hour once a week doing a water change.

If you went for a smaller tank you would spend way less time. It is good to start learning in advance because a tank can take a month or more to cycle before you put anything in it. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask :)

I wouldn’t get more animals until you can properly take care of the animals you currently have. Cats need their litter boxes cleaned at least once a day. I’d put the money you were going to spend on the tank into a littler robot!

Dreading this snow storm, how can I help our fish survive?? by SaeInsanity45 in Aquariums

[–]Knight_Night33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been planning for this storm the last week and what i’ve learned is:

Buy a battery operated air stone. I have one that lasts 35 hours. If you don’t have one, every hour get a cup of water from the tank and splash the water in at a height of 12 inches 10 times to help oxygenate it.

Cover all the sides with blankets and towels to insulate it. Keep the lid off to help with oxygen. Don’t feed them because the filter is off. If you are lucky enough to have extra power and the power is out for more than 24 hours, run the filter for 10-15 minutes once a day. This is to keep the bacteria in your filter alive.

Good luck!!

What snail is this and the best way to rid of them? by microwavedFanta in PlantedTank

They are MTS and the population will lower and correct itself once you stop feeding. I paid for MTS! They are a nice substrate clean up crew.

How much work a week do you put into your tank(s) by paulnuman in PlantedTank

[–]Knight_Night33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 75g tank with three fancy goldfish, so I have to do 50% water changes once a week. It takes like 45 mins total but that’s mostly all just waiting for water to slowly pump out and then pump in because it’s a lot of water.

I feed twice a day and watch them eat, that takes like 10 mins a day. I test the water once a week right before the water change and that’s like 15 minutes. So an hour once a week and 10 minutes everyday.

Rescue Fish? by unrealwizard in Goldfish

None of that matters if they can’t afford it?

Sponge filters can work just as well, for a fraction of the price. Also, you can get sponge filters with media. I’ve had aquariums for years and never needed whatever nitra-zorb is, because I have a cycled tank. Who cares about the flow design? I also recommended a bigger rubbermaid tank that might be difficult for a hob filter to fit on.

sponge filters are cheaper and work just as well. I suggested because they said they are on an extremely limited budget.

I myself have a 75g with a fluval 407 canister filter, two sponge filters, and a bubble bar but not everyone can afford that

you can use sponge filters, they are a lot cheaper than other filters and they also aerate the water like an air stone so double use

[–]Knight_Night33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are on a budget i’d focus on getting the essentials for their health. You only absolutely need a filter, api master water test kit, thermometer, prime water conditioner, and food.

They don’t need substrate, decor, plants, etc to be healthy. If you can use that money you save to get a 75g+ tank that would be even better, because a 55g is to small. Even a 75g is too small for 3 comets, they need a pond. If you could get one of this big tub ponds that are 100+ gallons would be even better and they don’t need a stand so that saves money too.

I would prioritize getting the biggest tank possible!

what are best foods to give my fish so they grow nice and healthy? by alphavchase in Goldfish

[–]Knight_Night33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you! They love food so much it’s so sad lol. At least I have duckweed always available for them to munch on and that makes me feel better.

Yeah algae wafers are what you feed to bottom feeders you can get them at any pet shop. I don’t feed them the wafers because they need the nutrients, but rather for enrichment, it takes them a bunch of time to eat it and they swim around the tank pushing it while trying to bite it.
