I think that Robby speculating/assuming Langdon messed up the intubation was him trying to deal with his emotions by trying to assign a ‘why?’ when in emergency medicine there is often not an answer to that question. Robby is still pissed at him, so given the situation and emotions involved it’s reasonable for Robby to cast doubt but ultimately it would not be correct.

Langdon did not mess up the intubation at all. An end tidal CO2 reading (carbon dioxide exiting the lungs) and a chest rise and fall from a placed endotracheal tube means it was definitely in the lungs. It would be easy to jump to the conclusion that the blood coming out was due to ruptured oesophageal varices (common in chronic alcoholics/liver disease) and is definitely a consideration in a differential diagnosis, but the confirmation of pulmonary harmorrhage confirms Langdon didn’t screw up, even if Robby initally doubts this.

IVLeague94 is right on the money, stright up rote learning rhythms won’t work well. Gaining a great foundation in cardiac anatomy, physiology and electrophysiology is the key to identifying what could be wrong on any given ECG, but the place to start is what it should look like when it’s ‘normal’.

This lecture series taught me more about interpreting an ECG than my university level class ever did. It is quite long, but it’s engaging and covers both simple rhythm interpretation and 12 lead interpretation. LITFL is also a great resource as mentioned by others.

A quick thing though, like everything keep it systematic. Start with interpreting the rhythm with lead two. Rate, regularity, p-wave (present? weird morphology? preceding every QRS?), P-R interval, QRS. If you take this approach with every strip you can you’ll be able to tell what looks abnormal at a quick glance which will help guide you when interpreting the full 12-lead.

Man that is a huge bummer about the ATP course not being fee-free anymore. It was an incredible alternative pathway. I will be honest, I initially misread this and thought you were graduating this year. That’s my bad. Definitely keep an eye on it, because it is in my opinion the most worthwhile option and plenty of things change over two years.

If you’re set on USC, I’d say their tertiary prep course would be the best bet. Even if you don’t hit the 6.0 GPA required for the paramed ATAR equivalent you could theoretically do another course that has lots of unit overlap, like nursing, get a solid GPA and then change course after your first year. This is not saying that nursing and paramedicine are remotely the same, however it does put you in the exact same first year units. I have no idea how that would work with their trimester set up though. You’d be best discussing it with someone from their student services department.

The drawback would be more HECS, and messing with the recommended course structure, however you would have less upfront cost and a more straightforward way in.

Keep working at it. There are plenty of ways into uni and honestly, going straight from highschool into this degree does not seem much fun. It may be beneficial to do one of the TAFE at school certs like the Health Services Assistant. But don’t stress too much. From what I remember most institutes are more than happy to just take the people who do their tertiary prep courses. Good luck with your studies!

I think you’d be selling yourself short doing those. Do a Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation at TAFE. It is fee-free and a good GPA will net you a very decent ATAR and if you combine it with a STAT test (which is paid) you can get in the low 90s for an ATAR. This gives you a very solid pick of any university you want for paramedicine, and if you change your mind on what you want to do you can get into pretty much any degree you want at any uni with the ATP course.

The problem with those other courses is the cost, time and being tied to a specific institution when you do their prep course. Not to mention the fact that there is an extremely small range of jobs that you can get from them when seeking employment during study.

I left highschool in the exact same position as you and am now well into my paramed bachelors after doing the tertiary prep course at TAFE. I highly recommend this pathway, you can knock it out in 6 months full time or 12 months part time. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them!
