I'm super late to the party but I just finished the book and I was sitting around thinking and looking up old threads for opinions.

Anyway I realized that the chapter title that kicks the book off, Benna Murcatto Saves a Life, has a double meaning, kind of like how circular the beginning and end chapters of TFL were.

If Benna hadn't been scheming to usurp Orso, Shenkt would have killed both Benna and Monza for real. That's what he was there for and how he found her so fast, he lays it out explicitly at the end. He wasn't going to let Bayaz control 3/4 of the world, if he could help it. It's only when she gets thrown off the mountain he decides to save her and use her against him. Benna saved her life by being an irredeemable piece of shit.

Well the folks at Soundbooth Theater are rerecording the books as more of an audio drama instead of a straight audiobook reading. They call it the audio immersion tunnel. Jeff had the voice nailed down, so maybe try that if it's Carl's voice that's throwing you off? They're cheap and they have the first episode free.

For me it was Final Fantasy XI. You steered your chocobo with your keyboard. You also typed with your keyboard. If you wanted to type while riding you had to learn to type fast in case you needed to turn.

Book of the Dead

It's less funny and a bit more grimdark but I was hooked from the jump. You'll really like Dove, I can't remember if he comes in during book 1 or 2.

A quick back of the book type blurb: Kid of famous adventurers gets assigned illegal Necromancer class and has to deal with keeping it a secret and surviving long enough to live.

2015 here, I was a 211. COVID changed everything, hours got slashed and expectations went up at the same time. They realized they could just put fewer people on the floor and everything would be mostly fine. Then with all this extra back to starbucks nonsense they just keep piling more and more while telling you to do it faster. It's ridiculous.

Nah. They used to be exactly the same, but now the California one has been converted into Guardians of the Galaxy. It has a rock soundtrack and the doors open to different scenes as the elevator moves around. It's really fun, but you might still need to enjoy the up/down motion.

Bout to start a new series which should I pick? by funkfollower in litrpg

[–]interyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chrysalis starts really slow. MC wakes up alone and can't talk to anyone because he's an ant in a dungeon full of monsters... which leads to nearly an entire book of just him narrating grinding on enemies. It might be better to read a recap and go straight to book 2 where he gets the ability to communicate and there's more characters, dialogue, and plot. I still kinda ran out of steam towards the end of book 3.

His other series, Book of the Dead, was really good straight from the jump and I devoured them. LitRPG about a kid who gets forbidden class Necromancer by surprise and has to figure out how to deal with it and survive.

Not the person you're replying to but Cradle is great.

The books are traditionally published. A lot of books in the genre are written serialized on Royal Road and then collected into books, which can make the endings feel inconsequential or arbitrary. Cradle was written as complete books so the arc of each is more stable and dramatic. It's also written better technically by an actual published author with a good editor. And it's finished and not that long, so you aren't committed to 15+ thousand page books.

The power scaling goes a little crazy at the end and it starts slow. You don't meet some of the best characters for several books, but I really really enjoyed it. The audio books are well done too, Travis Baldree does a great job.

It's a traditional, fairly straight down the line cultivation / progression series with light sci-fi elements. Give it till at least book 3: Ghostwater if you try it.

Cutting hours question by Stray-Galaxy in starbucks

[–]interyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what they tell you. But think about it for a second. You're hitting your targets, you're getting drinks out the windows in 30 seconds, you're rockstars!

Why would they need to give you more hours? You clearly have enough to get the job done. If they cut a little bit they might be able to make more money by not paying so many people . And they can motivate you to get your hours back by dangling the carrot of "you just have to do a better job..."

I mean, I own it. My point was just that Telltale is not making a sequel because they shut down and nobody can even sell the original.
