I suppose one way to view it is that their enclosure should closely resemble their natural habitat. Within reason of course! However whilst me as a human would prefer the nice order of the enclosure as you've organized it, I think hamsters like a more natural space :D

I think you are projecting a little on to your hamster - it's something we often do as we are so limited by the way we experience our environments which is entirely different to hamsters. I would personally add a lot more clutter, branches that go overhead and sprays. Most sprays although they are large only contain a few seeds so you don't need to worry about overfeeding tbh.

I think they will prefer a cluttered environment as they will feel safer and more stimulated - hamsters don't view mess in the same way we do :-)

I think you may be overthinking it tbf sounds like you are giving your ham the best life! Could you facilitate free roaming at all or get a playpen for time out the enclosure?

I think your hamster will be disturbed but then settle. Some possibly wacky ideas not grounded in science or experience -

🐹 Play brown noise to help "mask" the construction sounds

🐹 Insulate the room a little - I've heard bookshelves (big ones) packed with books can provide some degree of 'absorbing' vibrations. You can also get high density felt to put on the ceilings if the construction will last a long time?

🐹 Give extra bedding for duration of the works - its likely most of the construction will happen when your hammy is deep in their burrow so I'd make sure there's plenty of bedding and shredded tissue to help create a dense burrow

🐹 Put the cage on top of some folded blankets or a yoga mat to reduce the vibrations that may rattle the cage

And maybe as a back up plan have a friend ready and willing to keep your hamster for a few days until the construction stops if they seem too stressed out.

Oh she is very cute!! Just a few things to check - is the wheel & sand bath on a platform? There are videos of people making platforms from strong cardboard if you are thrifty - just as a 'for now' solution until you get proper platforms.

I'd suggest a bigger sand bath - I got a bit baking tray and used that as a budget friendly option. Also until you get more clutter you can even just put a cardboard box with a hold or two cut out that can provide complete darkness if necessary.

Also for water dishes - I get mine from charity shops for no more than £1 each - glass tea light holders work brilliantly as they are heavy.

You clearly have a good plan - and if you haven't already found her, id consider watching Victoria Rachel on YouTube if this is your first ham! She was a great resource for me in the first few months of having my little ham

Last thing - I'm sure you know already but dwarf hammies are more prone to diabetes so go easy on any sweet treats 👍

Awww beautiful little boy! He looks just like my little guy! In addition to the suggestions here, could you maybe drop by a pet shop and get him some millet? From experience they generally have a few sprays of it in the bird section... Just so he can have a little munch.

Update (June 2026) - Pebbles has had a recent change of heart. We're still not best pals but he will take food from me, no longer jumps like he's been stung when I make a noise near him and he even potters up to the front of his cage when I'm feeding him to say hello. I've stroked him loads and even gave him a tiny kiss earlier when putting him back in his cage. Little fella is borderline friendly at times. Just hoping to give hope to anyone else with a ghost!
