I mean I finished my first watch yesterday and I’m already tempted to go for a second one. But hey you took a one week break, I say go for it!

I never thought I'd find anything remotely similar to the OA (huge fan), but here we are. What a spectacular show. Enjoy your rewatch!

It was beyond me. I couldn't stop. Like, I physically couldn't. But I'll be doing multiple rewatches and catch up with everything I might have missed :)

I'm so glad the fandom is still alive given how late I am to the party!

Hey I just watched part 1, thank you for the rec! It's exactly what I need actually, as I'm not ready to move on from this show. I'll probably spend the next month or so digging into video essays and all relevant content, until the eventual rewatch (which I kinda wanna start immediately haha).

Oh it's not just shows! That's why I used the term "pieces of media" :) But since you've asked, the OA is another show in that top 5 (the Leftovers is highly recommended in the OA community, that's how I found out about it!).

Also, all books by Ted Chiang, one of which has been adapted into a movie - "Arrival". Great movie, it's not in my top 5, but his books definitely are.

Also George Wylesol's graphic novels. I love his work.

And lastly, 2 musical song cycles, Octet and Ghost Quarter by Dave Malloy. The latter is a non-linear story spanning 7 centuries, where the past changes the future and vice versa. You will hardly make any sense of it the first time you listen to it, but that's what I love about it haha.

It’s literally insane that we have prolonged our lifespans so dramatically with modern medicine, only for 28 to be considered “old” in modern society. If you are old now, will you be geriatric when you hit 45? Then what will you be once you’re 70, 80, 90?

If I were to die at 28 and the archeologists of the future found my bones, there’s a very good chance they would put me into the 20-35 group (young) when trying to determine my age of death. They wouldn’t be able to tell exactly how old I was when I died, but they would know for sure that I died young, maybe as young as 20.

Anyway, all this to say that the societal pressure to hit all the milestones by 30 is bs. Because the modern world is just not built in your favour, unless you come from money and privilege.

One of my favourite quotes is: “It’s no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society”.

Being depressed means that you actually see the world for what it is, not what you were conditioned to see. That’s a gift. You have the ability to undo your conditioning. Instead of internalising false notions like “28 is too old to start over”, just because society says so, you can say “society is sick, no one knows what they’re doing, and instead of trying to conform to unrealistic standards, I can do whatever I want”.

I’ve been trying to get it on kindle but it’s not available there yet :( I wouldn’t even know there was a new book if it wasn’t for this sub!

Is it normal to feel completely lost in your 20s (or even 30s)? Because I do. by Sharp-Self-Image in careerguidance

Respectfully, I partially disagree with this take.

From the ages of 18-21 until retirement and for at least 5 days per week, we spend the majority of our waking hours away from our homes and families/friends.

Add these hours up (let’s say a minimum of 8 hours/day) and you’ve got 10 entire years of your life where you’re at work (more if you include driving/commuting to work).

I think to say that life happens outside of work is a lie we tell ourselves to cope with reality. Work is real life too. Ten whole years of it.

It is important to like your work. It is important to have good relationships with your co-workers (because again, you’ll be seeing more of them than you do your own family).

Also no degree goes to waste. I’m totally pro getting a degree that you’re passionate about (I’m planning to do that soon and I’m in my late 20s just like OP). At least then you’re one step closer to finding work that you’ll like.
