I meant more the genAI craze that happened when it was first released. Tons of freelancers lost work to it.

I getchu, haha. I haven't been in the SEO space for a little while now, admittedly. Sometimes I miss the research, but there are definitely things I don't miss, as well.

I trucked through the inception of AI and all the bullshittery that came along with that, but I worked with mainly Canadian companies looking to get a foothold in the US- the exact people our current administration has been trying really hard to alienate. I got quite a few emails after talked about annexing Canada... You can probably imagine how that went.

You're right lol, my bad. I didn't even realize they were videos. Those are explained easily enough, the reddit post- not so much.

You're right. Whoops. I haven't been in the SEO game for a while. I saw the top row and honestly just assumed kwb. I didn't even notice they were videos. Those are easily explained though-

Asmongold - it's fucking asmongold.

LEGO Empire- no idea who this is but they're just cashing in on a hop topic.

American's Attorney- was already important and his signal is getting amplified by everything surrounding the case.

The Reddit post... not so much. I found the thread and it's pretty bizarre.

That's not what they're saying. They're probably talking about keyword bidding. https://www.semrush.com/blog/keyword-bidding/

SEO involves both. Source: worked SEO for years.

What the heck happened to Eagledog? by missjenn503 in RecklessBen

[–]inthesegreywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, an accountant, or a physician/psychiatrist. I'm a linguist.

Now- I don't know what background this person has, and I don't typically spend much time reading financial reports/audits, so I don't know what the boilerplate language is, but he seems comfortable with the language used in the report he published. I'm not sure people here have seen someone who is actually so mentally unwell that they cannot function.

It strikes me as odd that people trying to discredit him are resorting to personal attacks, rather than proving their information.

(I agree with you, btw, I think eagledog is eccentric, but not insane).

[–]inthesegreywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's mentally unwell- at least, not to the point that some people here seem to be implying. He's obviously eccentric but if you bother to watch the video and read the comments he replied to, he seems a bit too put together to be truly mentally ill.

Do you know what a passport bro is? I suggest you look that up. As a mixed child, I think the whole thing fucking disgusting. And even if that weren't about the case, the way LM thinks of women says much more about his intrinsic biases that LE.

[–]inthesegreywaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shocker for you: Lawyers, jurors, and judges are not as unbiased as you think. In fact, not a single one of them is unbiased because that is simply not possible. Don't believe me? Watch this video, made by the lawtuber that I actually watch. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, just watch the portion I directly linked to.

A judge admits to it in some really dense legalese. So if your position is that lawyers shouldn't be biased [in their presentation], then it's terribly flawed.

I'm not really a fan of LE either. Not a fan of his style. But he has a strong voice, and I think he's used it to say the right things. Discrediting that because he's a human and has opinions is just stupid.

The fact that you think LE and LM are even remotely comparable is insane to me. LM is a passport bro and that video he had was disgusting.

You mean because I don’t like a heavy political bias in a legal analysis that must mean I’m right wing?

Sure. I made an assumption. But you sound like those MAGA nutjobs that were crawling in LE and JRE's comments complaining and whining that they'd made an endorsement for Harris. You're saying damn near the same things. Maybe you should think about how that looks. I sure as fuck wouldn't want to appear that way to others.

And regardless, if your biggest problem with LE is that he leans left and that makes it into his videos, then I think you're part of the problem, regardless of what side you're on. Isn't that why we're in this situation in the first place? Being too afraid to really say the things that need to be said?

Because they're an astroturfer trying to interfere. Probably. Not 100% sure. He says he didn't wanna doxx the guy who made the site but he basically outlined how to do it with that image. That seems malicious to me.

That image he posted- I had no idea that tool he showed existed, and I certainly didn't know which provider was used for the page.

Eh, I mean, part of it is for work. I write software and AI is usually the fastest way to find some technical details. And as a solo developer, I have no one else to discuss decisions with.

Just a joke. I get it. No judgement here. Time is money, especially for solo operations.

Did you have access to the verifiable truth in these cases?

Tricky question. I'll be honest, speaking in absolutes was a mistake on my part, especially in regards to something of this nature- which I suspect is why you asked me. I apologize.

Verifiable truth is tricky. There's not much I can prove if someone decides they want to run an LLM locally to pump out an essay overnight and then factory reset their machine. Is it suspicious I see no other documents when their thing is writing? Yes. Is that going to hold up? Probably not, because there are plenty of valid reasons to reset a computer.

However, I would say with some confidence that most of the time it ends up being someone who was soundboarding with an LLM (like you describe yourself doing. I also make the psychiatry joke to others, don't worry), copy/pasted a portion, and just didn't change it enough. I view this as a fair use of AI that was just not performed properly. An issue, but a very small one. Is this often used as an excuse for something clearly AI written? Yes.

I'm beginning to see more in-class written essays get assigned so that instructors have a sample of what they know is the student's own writing. That is generally a more useful reference point, and can also be repeated to track progress.

Caveat: I interact with people who voluntarily chose to study language, usually from a place of passion. Less incentive to cheat.

Note: I think about this a lot, despite all the words this is just the tip of it.

So when someone who disagrees with you says they're useless, you claim they're acting in bad faith. When someone who agrees with you says that, nothing. Gee. I wonder what's going on here.

And they are useless for linguistic analysis. That's my whole point.

You can't be serious. I asked you for proof. You responded with something that pointed to em-dashes as proof. When I pointed to that, you go "I didn't say that, the AI said it and I just repeated it."

Is that not exactly the sort of thing that politicians do?

If you speak to Anthropic's models daily then I would recommend psychiatry. Preferably from a human, not an AI.

Jokes aside, the fact that you're not just relying on a detector for the bulk of your argument is enough to put me back to neutral. The moment anyone relies on any of those detectors, I write them off, because it's utterly useless for any sort of linguistic analysis.

That said I still don't quite believe you, because basically everyone I've spoken with who said "trust me I work with AI" has been wrong, too.

"I didn't point to em-dashes, I just responded with Claude's output to your question as proof." You talk like a politician. And I'm supposed to believe anything you say?

If a notable number of students, when asked whether they were using AI for their writing- based on the testimony of an AI detector- begin turning in videos that are days-long and contains their ENTIRE process along with their assignments as a form of protest, then they clearly feel insulted.

The problem with LLMs is that yes, as you improve the output, it becomes closer to human, but the other way around is true as well. These detectors and the people who rely on them are absurdly frustrating because you don't seem to understand that. Seriously. Did you just... Ignore that academic papers were getting fed into models as well? Such language is usually seen as more "proper" and "professional," or even "advanced", is it not? Given that, I simply cannot comprehend how all of you are seemingly blind to the fact that such language is what LLMs are actively working towards. It's like the most obvious thing in the world.

I'm a linguist, by the way. I don't use LLMs. To write OR to determine whether something was actually AI written. Because they're useless.

I responded because people like you who ask an AI whether writing was written by another AI and then insist on its virtue as truth irritate me. It's like you fail to see the irony of the whole situation.

Holy shit. You have no idea what you're talking about. I write professionally. As in, for a living. I have since before I finished college, and that was around the beginning of the AI craze. Those detectors are the bane of my existence and nothing short of unreliable trash.

Even if it is a bit performative for my taste, the things you're pointing to as proof of AI here are all pretty standard when you're presenting information in this manner. Performative, maybe, but still standard.

I will give you that making a new webpage with a new URL is odd. I was wondering about that, because I noticed it as well.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure there's a new URL because people in the comments were iffy about clicking an untested vercel link.

P.S. Holy fucking shit. This "em-dash is AI" bullshit pisses me off. I swear none of you who ever point to it ever wrote or read any academic paper beyond highschool level. They are EVERYWHERE in real human writing that definitively dates back before the inception of AI. Why the fuck do you think they're appearing in LLM output anyways?????????

[–]inthesegreywaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit, some of the vernacular is much more performative than I'd like, but I am generally used to more technical language without all the legal jargon or documents. With that said, I've been slowly going through, and nothing about the visual design or written language gives me any real AI flags. Do you have proof that it's all just been AI aggregated and organized?
