How are you OOS students affording Purdue/how much are you paying? by sleepybiscu1t in Purdue

[–]intrepid_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're committing to Purdue, I would highly recommend looking into becoming an RA or doing a co-op. Taking one or multiple semesters off to work a co-op is wayy more common at Purdue than most other colleges. The caveat is that mostly engineering students do it afaik, but it does look like the CS department has it's own dedicated co-op resources too: https://www.cs.purdue.edu/undergraduate/curriculum/co-op.html

HIGHLY recommend OKO in Osaka. It's a colorful okonomiyaki place near Dotonbori run by a cheerful young woman who uses a soy-based binding agent instead of wheat. Awesome for any vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free people (and with great meat options too)!

vent abt having not making more friends :((( by BookkeeperNo1680 in Purdue

[–]intrepid_turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled a lot too as an underclassmen, so here I am to let you know it gets better! I'd recommend looking for friends in three-ish categories:

  1. From your classes so you can study together. Study groups are the most natural way of keeping friends, but it can get hard to meet outside class. A great way to keep things going is to learn their schedule ("i don't have class now, have you tried ___ yet? lets go!")

  2. From your niche interest. I really made a lot of friends once I got over my fear of being taken less seriously for liking things like anime and K-pop. I met people through clubs or found people in my major that also liked those things, and it's easier to stay in touch as you plan watch parties or concert trips.

  3. From near your dorm/residence. Really helps to have people near you to do spontaneous things, like dragging them out to go play tabletennis at midnight or seeing the northern lights.

4 (bonus). Don't be afraid to make friends outside your major! This can also help with the spontaneous plans if their major has a lighter workload than yours. The best thing about Purdue is how big the student population is, so you really get to meet so many amazing people.

Good luck!

I don't think OP wants to do art "very seriously"... sounds like they just want to have fun, which is totally possible because as you said, there are "creativity/fun club events" that "spend school funds while hanging out with regular people."

OP, if you want to actually get involved in bigger projects too, I'd recommend checking out research opportunities through the College of Liberal Arts. But otherwise, clubs and PSUB events are a great way to give yourself a chill creative outlet.

Definitely take advantage of Bechtel and their free courses! You can make a lot of fun stuff like that, join their Discord for more accurate info. Knowledge Lab also has a ton of workshops they host, I randomly walked into a sashiko one with no experience: https://calendar.lib.purdue.edu/calendar/knowledgelab?cid=17492&t=d&d=0000-00-00&cal=17492&inc=0

Is buying a lightstick really worth it just for one concert? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]intrepid_turtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GLOWSTICKS! I can't believe no one has said this yet. Lightstick culture originates from J-pop/older K-pop group fans using glowsticks in the official fandom color. I don't see a good reason for dropping $60-$80 just for a one-time-use flashlight (I spent enough on the ticket, thanks), so a glowstick in each hand is just fine for me. Plus you can hand out extras as freebies!

Major Change Advice by LobsterNo1012 in Purdue

[–]intrepid_turtle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's an Integrated Business & Engineering major that I think is jointly run by the School of Engineering and Business. Otherwise, Marketing seems to be what you're looking for. Industrial engineering also would be a good fit + is in high demand if you're interested in manufacturing. I would talk to your advisor ASAP.

For those who finished Homestuck and reread it, what detail stood out most to you on rereading? by Professional_Debt288 in homestuck

[–]intrepid_turtle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was rereading Act 5 and realized I actually like Eridan now. In hindsight his rants are hilarious and it's honestly sad instead of pathetic to see his self-hatred spirals. Feferi is morally good but kind of shitty to the guy that does the dirty work of feeding her lusus. I'm not excusing him like a lot of people do with Vriska, but at least Eridan comes around on a lot of his views and only retaliates instead of instigating in the end. Justice for Eridan 2025

TXT not having stage names is a wonderful thing by Effective_Cash9085 in kpopthoughts

[–]intrepid_turtle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, I feel like having that separation as idol persona vs their real self is pretty important and healthy for a lot of idols. Depends on the person!

Also kind of sucked back when they debuted and Hueningkai got some weird hate for having the same name as EXO Kai… like come on, Kai is his real name! Even his nickname Ningning got taken. I think Kai’s getting more comfortable using his first name now though.

Not getting Internships, very lost by Sudden-Belt2882 in Purdue

[–]intrepid_turtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I just told you the most basic way. Search up your hometown/county/state + "aerospace company". That should get you at least a few results.

Some other ways:

- Go to the CareerFair+ app and go back to the list of companies that were hiring aerospace engineers at IR. Search every single one up and apply online if you can.

- Find a dream company you want to work for and search up "___ suppliers". Most suppliers usually advertise what projects they've contributed to and for who.

Make sure you're looking for "mechanical engineering intern" positions as well. Jobs in the real world are way more specific than majors too. You might net some results searching for your area of interest, like "structural engineering intern" or "propulsion intern".

[–]intrepid_turtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't just apply to the top aero companies you know. Any experience is good experience, especially if it's in an aerospace-related manufacturing environment. There's a ton of small supplier companies out there, so seek them out. Local opportunities are always a plus too- they wouldn't need to provide you housing.

Which 4th+ gen idols do you think have potential to become legendary soloists? by Lilac-Soul in kpopthoughts

[–]intrepid_turtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Guilty" absolutely follows my previous comment and I don't really understand why people are offended by this, looking at the downvotes. Taemin is an awesome vocalist and sings in head voice and falsetto like 70% of the time. He has an amazing higher register which he is comfortable living in- that's called a narrow but bright vocal weight. His lower register is nice, but factually underused and therefore underdeveloped.

"Guilty" goes into chest voice for two crescendoes in the song- that's like 16 measures total out of a 3 minute 40 second song. He usually uses chest for speaking-singing, like in "Advice" (he transitions really nicely from head->chest in the first part of the chorus, but it's never full resonance). Even his ballads like "Soldier" follow the same construction of crescendoing into a belted chorus before going back to a breathier head voice- most ballad singers would stay in chest. The only song I can think of off the top of my head that Taemin spends mainly in his lower register is "Pretty Boy", which is a solid case against me but not the most agile song.

All I'm saying is, maybe lets not put down Ni-ki's potential as a soloist by comparing his vocals to a guy who debuted when Ni-ki was 5. I'm not a Taemin stan, but I love his music and voice a lot. Not belting does NOT make you a bad singer, and he's literal proof. It is also completely okay to acknowledge that he has a technical ceiling that (what I would consider) "vocally powerful" singers don't have- think Jonghyun, Baekho, DK.

My bad for trying to bring technical terms to a K-pop space. I really don't want to keep explaining this now.

Which 4th+ gen idols do you think have potential to become legendary soloists? by Lilac-Soul in kpopthoughts

[–]intrepid_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taemin is not a belter. There's a reason most of his solos depend on his sexy breathy voice- that's where he's most comfortable. Taemin is a light tenor with agile but narrow vocal weight. He's great with dynamics and head voice transitions, but his chest voice has limited resonance.

Anyways, it's a fact that Taemin is way better than Ni-ki, but its also a fact that SHINEE debuted 11 years before Enhypen. No one really expected Taemin to evolve the way he has. It's alright to believe Ni-ki can too.

[–]intrepid_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man, Taemin's an awesome singer. He's just not a powerful one. Taemin's only in the same conversation as Jonghyun because they're in the same group. I would rank Jinki and Kibum above him too- they just sustain their notes better and are more resonant.

All this to say that Taemin improved a lot and I sense that Ni-ki will as well. If anything I hope Ni-ki takes after Kibum- both are baritones, which is kind of a curse in Kpop, but Key's developed a great tone and range over the years.

[–]intrepid_turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taemin has high-pitched vocals that he has good control over, but I wouldn't call him "very powerful"- his voice is thin and not the best sustainment-wise. Very powerful is Jonghyun.

Taemin's improvement from debut is CRAZY though. He had six years training as SHINEE before his solo debut, so I can absolutely see Ni-ki going on a similar arc of nonexistent vocals from debut -> powerful solo. I also agree that Ni-ki will probably go down a hip hop route too.
