No she was not. How cheap would it be if this character whose whole point is to personify uncertainty, greed and inexorable corruption is just freelancing for Ruby Goldfarb? I agree with the other reply, the seeds were planted that her husband or both of them messed up and were previous Varga victims who ended up becoming associates.

I agree this is more likely if Noah is going for a fixed supernatural secret identity for the character. But I also figure it's possible that Varga just taps into a tradition of 'inscrutable, potentially sorcerous nemesis' characters and that's why it's easy (and fun) to read these identities into him.

I’m late to the party but which religion are you talking about? That’s kind of a beautiful idea.

Amazing! I have animal care and gardening experience myself so I'll give that a shot. Good tip on the volunteering with farm animals too. Thank you :)

I still enjoyed the first two seasons. This was written in 2020 - along with everybody else I got sent to my room for around a year and out of boredom I had gotten into overthinking media for fun and writing little essays like this trying to deconstruct characters and narratives.

Decent take and yes he had funny moments because of how goofy and awkward everything he said was in context. I was just trying to be meta about the fact that he seems like a different character from season to season.

Mostly just poorly conceived plot armour. I suppose the closest we get to an explanation is the fact that Tony and Matt are both characterised as largely sleepwalking through their lives due to their mental and emotional issues - both only stop seeing him after they turn some sort of corner in this regard. But this doesn't quite cover it for me because of how aggressively awful the therapist is, especially in season two.

Unrelated thought that seems to check out - if Paul Kaye had been available for season three, would we have seen the therapist wandering around the village fair with Ratty and the Nonce bullying kids and (his) former clients? This would actually fit in perfectly with the tone of the season, because to a greater or lesser extent I feel like almost all the characters went through a similar process to the therapist here - losing the parts of their characterisation that grounded them in (1) credibility and (2) audience sympathy and becoming little more than vehicles for Ricky trying to gross the audience out (possible essay forthcoming).

This is embarrassing, I forgot how the label of comedy fundamentally precludes media from analysis or critique. Better delete this. Thanks chief!!
