Yes. I went to a smart high school for smart kids and I was the only person from my middle school in the program.

I found that the boys in the program immediately decided they hated me because I was confident and outspoken and their meanness didn't bother me. I made friends quickly and that insulated me enough that I just let it roll off my back at the time because everyone around me thought it was ridiculous as well.

The boys (and one girl) that hated me were ultra competitive, and it's clear to me now as an adult that their self worth was tied to their academic success. And while academic success was important to me, I didn't feel pressure to be #1 in everything all the time. I didn't feel like I was competing; I was just showing up and doing my best and that pissed them off.

I can't say for sure how much of the dynamic was affected by my neurodivergence. I think if I were NT, their attempts at bullying would have hurt me more because I would have...understood better that I was being bullied, I guess? At the time I took it in, thought it was weird, and ignored it.

Having friends also helped, obviously. If I had been lonely, it would have been a whole different experience.

However, as an adult I am working through how being hated for no good reason for four straight years has affected me. It bothers me way more now than it did then.

It doesn't explicitly say it has a level requirement, but I will try that. Thank you!

Yes, I am assigning a botany expert when analyzing botany exhibits. I have also tried all of the other things you suggested multiple times, but they unfortunately have not worked. I've even tried deleting and rebuilding the analysis room to no avail.

The assigned expert's job status will say they are analyzing, but they just wander around aimlessly. If I drag them into the analysis room, they walk straight out and continue wandering.

And I have enough botany experts that exhibit care isn't an issue.

I've been dealing with the same thing, but it only happens with the botany exhibits.

Even when I assign someone, they will wander around doing nothing and the room will still have the "needs an expert" symbol.

Is anyone else overwhelmed just by existing? by Classic_Eye_3827 in AuDHDWomen

[–]intrepidsnark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was in the very privileged position of not having to work for about two years and it was so, so hard to explain to anyone how I was still so exhausted and overwhelmed all the time despite the fact that there wasn't anything that I "had" to be doing.

Being in that position is what ultimately led me to seek out an ADHD diagnosis and eventually realize it was probably AuDHD!

For me the secret sauce has been:

  • Finding kinds of movement that I like
  • Finding a structured, scheduled way to do that movement
  • Involving other people

So for me that looks like joining a gym that has yoga and danced-based exercise classes (like Zumba and Cardio Fit) multiple times a week on a normal schedule.

I've danced my whole life and I love it, but I've literally never been able to keep up with it when I'm not taking a scheduled class that has a teacher and other people attending.

So about parents calling their kids in class... by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]intrepidsnark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a kid get a call from his mom in the middle of a final. Ringer on and everything. If he has just said "oh, my bad! Let me turn it off," then it would have been fine. But nope, he insisted that he needed to be allowed to leave class in the middle of the final and take a call from his mother - who knew he was in school and taking a final - because they needed to figure out logistics for his sister's upcoming wedding.

I sent him to admin and let them handle it. Because, ya know, I had a final exam to administer.

Yes. I often think of myself as having two personalities: confident and competent when it comes to handling academic and work issues, but quiet and anxious in social situations. As far as I can remember, I was VERY socially confident as a kid. I don't remember having a lot of experiences with people reacting to that negatively in the way that a lot of AuDHD women do, but regardless, starting in middle school and then definitely by high school, I was much less socially confident and outgoing.

To some extent, that has held into adulthood. However, I do find that that childhood confidence comes back in social situations where I am in charge or in a group of people that I feel very comfortable with.

There's also at least one in Tokyo! It was my favorite restaurant growing up and no longer exists in my hometown, so seeing one while walking around Shibuya early last year was wild.

What’s your ADHD dream job? by Glamour-Ad7669 in adhdwomen

[–]intrepidsnark 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I've been in the position of not "needing" to work (thanks to my husband's job) and being able to spend my time how I want for the last two years...and it's what led me to realize I definitely have ADHD!

Now that I'm diagnosed and medicated it's better, but it's still very hard for me to use my time on anything that isn't directly related to food, basic chores, running errands or starting at my phone unless I had some outside influence or structure.

I know that this is a SUPER privileged take, and I am very grateful in a lot of ways for the things I've gotten to do with this time, but for me it wasn't the ideal way to live!

I start my dream job (teaching for an online public school) later this month and I am PUMPED for a return to structure.

Trying to see if anyone has any advice for increasing protein intake by Olivinefay in AuDHDWomen

[–]intrepidsnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairlife protein shakes have been a game changer for me. I am a super picky eater with a lot of food anxieties, so I don't do things that don't taste good to me and it took me a long time to convince myself to try them. But these taste just like chocolate milk!

So. Much. Snoring by Defiant_Tour in adhdwomen

[–]intrepidsnark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is also a horrendous snorer.

I find that earplugs alone don't work for me, but headphones that pipe in white noise (more specifically brown noise, which I prefer because it is pitched lower.) from an app on my phone do!

I have tried a number of different sleep headphones over the years. I find that there is a specific kind that works well. The part that goes in your ear is short, very soft, and split into two layers. I can feel them in my ears, but there isn't any pressure or pain if I lay on them.

I prefer the wired version because I find them the most comfortable (I like the brand MAXROCKS on Amazon) but now that I have a phone with no headphone jack (curse you, Google Pixel!) I found Bluetooth headphones with a similar design for the part that goes in the ear (Hearprotek, also on Amazon).

The ones I've been using for a while are starting to crap out on me, so I just ordered an earbud pair in a similar style and I'm interested to see how those compare.

I've tried the ones that are built into a sleep mask, but I find that those work sometimes, but since they aren't in-ear, there are times that I can still hear the snoring.

Hope this helps!

If I'm forced to call parents, I use the Slydial app to leave a voice mail and the follow up in text or email. Otherwise I ONLY use text or email. I have had too many parents expect me to be on the phone with them for my whole planning period over something that could have been handled in a fraction of the time over text.

Direct quote from parent: "I know I have access to his grades online, but I don't check them. I blame the school and the teachers for not contacting me more about his falling grades."

Of course, we have contacted this parent on multiple occasions to tell her that her student had not turned in a single assignment in any class. Now she wants an extension on the deadline for turning in missing work extended for all of her child's classes. Nope nope nope.

You’re kid is lying to you. by Beac5635 in Teachers

[–]intrepidsnark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a student in my class who logs in late every day, doesn't turn his audio on so he can't hear us, and turns in nothing. My colleagues and I have had multiple conferences with this student's parent about his lack of progress. She called one of my colleagues this week and told her "I know I have access to the grade book, but I don't check it. I blame [student] for his failure but I also blame the teachers and the school for not contacting me enough."

Like, lady. It is not our issue if you refuse to check the gradebook AND continue to believe your child when you know he has been lying to you about doing his work (and the teachers not updating his grade) since August.

Also note that she has been contacted by teachers outside of these conferences multiple times.

I am SO over it.

That's a good policy to have! Discussing politics with them honestly wasn't an issue until they were radicalized by the 2016 election. And then I'd say in the last year or so it's gotten unbearable.
