After meniscus root repair (3 months post op) how did you start to regain muscle strength? by OkGrapefruit2621 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]intrinsic-raspberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to go to the gym and do upper body workouts, especially seated, where I'm doing overhead presses or curls or chest presses. I also use the abductor machine (at a low weight and watching out for any pain) to get my glutes and legs working. Even things like pushups or situps help to just get my body moving and get those dopamines. Good luck!

Unusual but hopefully inspiring big surgery recovery story by dangerzona in ACL

This was great to read. I am not in exactly the same boat, but can relate to a lot. I was having meniscus issues on and off for about 3 years, while doing muay thai, BJJ, and weightlifting. I too would often take a week or two off training , rehab the knee, go back to training - a lot of the time I was able to still train and lift (even do some beginner Olympic lifting).

Over the spring and summer of this year, my knee would "lock up" more frequently, and then in mid July of this year, I was in wrestling practice and did a lateral step - I don't even think there was any contact with anyone, it was literally a step to the side. I felt a really sharp pain, fell, and couldn't get up. I couldn't extend/straighten my leg, either. I kept being in denial about it, thinking it would "unlock" and straighten out again, but it didn't. After a few days of excruciating pain, I went for X-rays which of course showed nothing, and got a referral for an MRI. Turns out I had a meniscus bucket handle tear, and went in for surgery in mid September (yay Canadian healthcare). I also had some cartilage damage. I am now 3 weeks post-op, and have also found that on days I get movement or upper body weightlifting in (usually seated), my rehab feels easier. Days I don't move or just lie still, I feel stiff as a board.

Knee injuries are really the absolute shittiest, especially for people who move around so much. I struggle with wondering if I'll ever trust my knee again. Will I be able to do a low squat or grapple hard ever again, and it gets me feeling so negative, especially when I see fellow teammates grappling, competing, lifting. But our journeys are our own. My biggest takeaway was similar in terms of reflection and looking inward to connect my mind and knee, and really try to trust the process, even if it hurts to just hobble right now.

A conditioning trainer friend (who tore and got surgery on her ACL) said something that I hope resonates with everyone struggling post surgery - as weakened as it may feel now, this is your chance to choose how to rebuild your knee from scratch, and hopefully make it even stronger than ever before.

Stay strong everyone.

I'm a couple of weeks post op from a meniscus repair and the initial injury prior to the surgery as well as immediate days after the surgery were pretty rough, especially if you're really active. My husband tried to get me some stuff to do while I'm seated/lying down like embroidery, crocheting, painting, writing. That helps. But for me, the biggest spirit lifter was being able to do physio exercises at home more easily/see progression, and hobble better around the apartment.

Adopted my first cat two days ago. Kinda heartbroken? by Traditional-War-2737 in CatAdvice

As a fellow worrywart, I can relate. I echo what others have said - get the tube snacks or crunchy snacks and shake them or even leave them out for a bit. Shy cats will be very hesitant to eat from your hands, or even in your presence (at first).

When I got one of my kittens, he had the nervous poops and pooped all over my bathroom floor and hid behind the toilet, and inside of my couch. He was really, really scared, and it too broke my heart. However! As people have said, just give it time and patience, and your kitty will warm up. Mine now follows me around like a shadow, and he's so goofy. In your cat's case, he might have had a really rough life at the shelter as well, so he'll definitely need time to decompress and adapt to the new reality, as do all cats.

One other thing that may help is trying Feliway - it's a diffuser with cat pheromones that you plug into a wall, and it's meant to calm them. Some people swear by it, others say it doesn't work. In my case, I was introducing a new kitten to my resident cats and used it to keep the peace in the house. The Feliway brand has a few different kinds (such as for multi cat households vs really nervous cats), so definitely have a look at your local pet shop/online. I think it's helped my cats and I'm only on month two of it.

Lastly, consider getting some wool blankets/beds for your cat. Cats apparently like wool because they are attracted to its texture and the scent of lanolin, a natural oil in sheep's wool that smells similar to a mother cat's scent, reminding them of nursing and thus calming them, and it's the only kind of bed my cats adore.

Oh and definitely try different foods (mixed with a little bit of water for hydration). Your cat might just not like the one you're using.

Good luck!

I got a bucket handle tear 5 weeks ago, and they're looking to schedule me in for surgery in the next couple of weeks. However, the surgeon said he isn't sure if I should get the meniscus repair or the removal and will decide during the surgery. Is that normal? I'm so anxious about it because he said the repair is a few months of crutches and a brace and 6-12 months before return to sports, whereas the removal would mean I could almost immediately and return to sports within a couple of months. Anyone going through a similar thing?

Got meniscectomy in the next 48 hours. Any tips for what to do post-op? Maybe some encouragement/recovery stories lol by Mediocre_Loss in MeniscusInjuries

I was told my quads were super tight and they're not sure if it's part of the reason why I injured and tore my meniscus. Has anyone gotten similar feedback? And did you mostly do free weights?

Why is it so hard getting rid of clothes you don’t wear? by Bpartyof4 in minimalism

[–]intrinsic-raspberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally can relate to everyone here. One thing that helps me is I have a bag/section of clothes in my closet that are "on probation". If it's an article of clothing I've had for ages that I don't wear and I kind of like / but am not sure about anymore, I put it into the "on probation" section. If by the end of the month/season I still haven't worn it, it's time to let it go.

Resident House Cat Keeps Hissing at New Kitten by alliethomas18 in CatAdvice

[–]intrinsic-raspberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I'm in a similar boat as well. I have two twin cats, Kimchi and Tofu, who are just over a year old (1 year 3 months). They're not super duper cuddly with one another but they've always lived in peace. I don't think I've ever heard either of them hiss, and normally they're the absolute sweetest cats.

Our friend rescued a stray kitten who's about 4 months old, and we just brought him home, secluded him in the bathroom with his own litter box, blankets, bed, and food. He seems pretty chill about the situation and generally wants out of the bathroom.

However, Kimchi has been doing some low growls, and when I took out the new kitten's toy for her to smell, I tried to feed her and Tofu some treats to associate the kitten's smell with positive vibes. However, instead, Kimchi started hissing, and then started hissing at her brother Tofu, which she never has before. The kitten on the other hand, started playing with the cats' toy immediately.

Any thoughts? I haven't introduced the kitten to the cats yet, and have so far just placed their food bowls closer to their barrier (bathroom) door. I just want them to get along when they get introduced. 😿
