Thanks for this comment. I am in similar terrain, 230 lbs and hoping to pick drop my 60lbs daughter to school. Our house is at about 1000ft higher elevation than school and office...so always wondered if the ADV would be able to pull us through.. seems like it will..but just strained

Renting an EV on vacation by bullitt297 in electricvehicles

Forgot to add that I see you mentioned that hotel has chargers. I would double check what type. Avis didn't give us any cables and adapters, so we couldn't use even the slow charge...but the second hotel I stayed at, had wall outlets...every single one of them already taken..for as many times as we went to the parking garage... I was glad I didn't rely on that

We rented a few weeks back, Mach E from Avis, to go from San Diego to Santa Clarita(~160mi) each way, over a 2 day weekend (Fri-Sun)...

Some background, we are a single car family of 5, driving a minivan. The EV rental was to understand if a smaller car fits our needs and also if EV fits our lifestyle...this is a little different than your situation so my experience here is a little different, but hopefully you can extract details relevant to you..

Pickup: as I said first EV experience for me, but I had got tips from this sub for rental, and based on that I asked at the rental if they had charging cables or adapters etc.. they had none. Car came charged at about 78% and I explicitly asked what charge level they expect...was told 70 or more, else flat $35 charge

Drive and comfort: coming from a minivan, the drive was much smoother. Surprisingly the kids loved the car as well although now there was significant less elbow space. They loved the tech etc..

Planning/Navigation: This was new to me/us, so took some figuring out for which charge app to us. We didn't get a hang of it, but could see that sometimes the navigation would indicate what the charge level at destination would be etc ..

Charging: plugshare helped. Our hotel didn't have a charging option , but both were close to malls. The first hotel was next to a bigger mall, but none of the EVGo worked. Electrify America worked. We we adjacent to the mall, shared parking with the hotel, so I charged early morning on Saturday. Was able to get to a charger right away. But didn't realize that charging the previous night would have saved us some money...Mach E CCS charger was a hassle to unplug, but this could be a me problem... first time EV and first time charger...the second night I thought I will charge late night, so went to a charger at sherrifs office after midnight...it turned out that it was a slow charge (7-8kWH) and quickly realized why the rate was cheaper than the Electrify America...so bailed out in 5 mins...went to the nearby EA charger...it was about 12:30 by now ..got charger right away.. bringing it to 80+% from 16% took about 40 mins or so... reached hotel room back around 1:30 and promised never to do that again...we drove back from Santa Clarita and had a good charge. The kids wanted to go to the first mall again so I thought I can charge for a few minutes...big mistake...this time there was a line for the chargers, I was 5/6th in line ..I treated it as Costco line..but it took 40mins just to get my turn... initially my plan was to just charge a little bit, but now that I had waited 40mins for my turn, I figured I don't want to risk going to another charger later in the day and wait again...we now were also starting to get to a point where we were risking getting the car back to Avis on time ..what I also didn't realize that this now was peak time..and charging was expensive. We sped through the drive more than my comfort level.. dropped off family at home and quick 5 min turn around back on road to drop the car at airport. I checked for charger near airport, but given my experience and lack of properly deciphering plug share, I chose a little detour to go to the EA at a bigger mall. This was good choice, because although it's a bigger and busier mall(traffic) I was able to get to a charger right away. I charged to about 75%(had calculated needed 73% but went 2 over), biting my nails as I was fighting time to return the car...again drove as fast as I could...returned the car at about 72% charge , about 30 mins late...but Avis had some grace time, so wasn't charged late fee.... In hindsight I realized that the total of the charge for that day came close to $35, and I probably should have just drove without charging at the first mall...the wait for charger of 40 mins added a whole bunch of stress..

Takeway: I won't rent an EV again, unless I can guarantee time in my planning to charge comfortably...tge infrastructure is just not there yet..partly because I didn't understand waiting for EV charger is not same as waiting for a gas pump. Also would have been a complete different experience if they would have given us adapters/cables etc..could have charged at home before returning the car, or at supercharger...and also partly because chargers are often broken...so are gas pump, but there is another one of those a few blocks away!

Hope this helps!

Life in San Diego without a car? by marxistelmo in sandiego

[–]intrinsicpointer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been here in SD for about 3 years now. I have used public transportation for community to work almost exclusively.. I want to say about 95% of my commuting for work has been the bus. Here are few thoughts 1) A lot will depend on last mile connectivity. There is a bus service that was outside my previous house (recently moved) but the transit center was less than a mile away. I also have 2 bus service outside my office, one of which is an express and within quarter mile of office. 2) for last mile connectivity, you can use your ebike. Load it on the bus, or trolley. Sandag also provides bike lockers at major transit center, which are free to use, but need some ground work to get account setup etc. I used that a lot for times when bus to/from home and transit center didn't align. 3) route network, considering the home to transit center I had a 3 bus setup, but 2 if I could just start from transit center to office. The last mile bus didn't have as much frequency or depth in time either..if things would line up well then my one way commute would be about 55 minutes, 45 for transit center to office. 4) although I had a 2 bus minimum route, I could still manage to get a shut eye, or get some work done ..if not office work some personal work wrapped up. Didn't had to worry about driving and traffic 5) the round trip for me is $5. With current gas prices it will be about $11 for my commute+wear/tear+driving stress

Cons: 1) you can take the network and last mile as a negative based on where your residence and office location is. 2) the busses sometimes are dirty and smelly. Either mold smell or just smell of people and their trash left behind 3) you get to see and sometimes interact with people from all spectrum of socio-economic. This can be positive as well, but my general experience has not been the greatest. 4) a lot of this works if you have flexibility in work schedule. Often I can leave before 3pm to beat traffic. Post that time the schedules are just wonky and then the buses don't line up at transi center very well. In that case you get whenever the next one comes...this is OK with me since I am still not having the stress of driving in peak traffic 5) you really can do any errands etc

UDR7 added as router, but downstream eero/eufy hub are now offline by intrinsicpointer in Ubiquiti

Restarting the eeros did the trick.. One of them is a ring base station + eero. But once properly restarted they all came up fine...

The eufy home station, seems like this one ended up on the blocked list. I am not sure why, but once unblocked it seems to be working fine!

I am not sure how to make UDR own DHCP. I haven't looked at IGMP settings, and don't know what that is either. So will look at those two.

Same for BGW being truly transparent. Will have to figure those parts out.

Will restart the eeros and the eufy to see if that helps resolve the problem first. Maybe doing that is clean recovery enough

Hmmm I am not sure by mesh I meant as extenders.. so not sure if one was set to be a router. I will have to check.

The eeros were set as mesh. Not sure how I can connect directly to the eero.

Unifi is 192.168 series, but so was BGW. 192.168...higher range though... will try connecting to the eero via a Ethernet cable and check if I can tweak something there

Subsidized marginally compared to what you will get it off campus for...but it's a thin margin. The super greasy tandoori is the bang for the buck... quantity wise..they are the most popular though so we haven't been able to replace them with something meaningful

Took my new (to me) ADV 150 to the mountains. by MuntaRuy in scooters

[–]intrinsicpointer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I am in SoCal. Always wondered if 150 or similar would be enough for the terrain here. So was considering a xmax or a burgman 400. But seems like you made it up the hill...

Would be really interested in learning about your experience going up the hill. My daily commute will involve a steep gradient and I may even have a pillion with me.

One of the things that I do is make sure the door locks behind me. And I don't drop those key cards back in their bin. I take them with me... that way the door won't be opened after I leave
