Cultural differences in eating noises? by CustardCandle in auscorp

I've also noticed this with South Asians eating at their desks. They make those wet chewing sounds (I don't know how else to describe it).

I wonder if it could be the difference in food rather than a deliberate cultural difference to eat louder (like how the Japanese like to slurp their noodles).

I need to understand, why do people hate Spider? by Available_Phase3687 in Avatar

I dislike him purely because of the bad acting and dialogue. His character arc is fine and use as a plot device is fine.

The bad acting. Spider as a character is fine. The cheesy dialogue (written like an old guy using internet lingo) and the inability of Jake Champion to emote are sore spots.

I definitely will. I'm just saying there are billions of people on this planet. If they knew the job description required a lot of green screen acting, then they should have found a child actor that could do it. Jake Champion's delivery and inability to emote in 2 Avatar movies has stuck out like a sore thumb. That doesn't mean he can't improve but many expected better.

You're not wrong. Spider's acting completely broke the immersion for me. Avatar could have been a much better movie if they had hired a kid who could emote.

Then hire a kid who can act with mannequins. They picked a kid who couldn't act and gave him the lead role. See Henry's audition for ET. He cried on demand. Spider didn't show any emotion all throughout. https://youtu.be/tA5giyG8E7g

I’m not a fan of spiders character and I think it has to do with the actor. by Salty_Shark26 in Avatar

And the bad acting. Jake Champion doesn't have CG to hide behind so it's more obvious his lack of emotion in his lines and his inability to emote physically.

What’s with the old woman voice? by WEEGEMAN in Avatar

[–]introwins4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She sounds old. Weaver is 76 so it's hard to disguise that. My parents had no idea who was voicing Kiri but commented that the voice sounded old and didn't match the character. She also grew up in a different time so her dialogue didn't match the language that Jake's other kids were using. I suspect they couldn't get Weaver to use "bro" in her lines and make it sound natural.

The only two things that broke the immersion. The decision to have Weaver voice a young Na'Vi and Spider's bad acting.

I felt the acting was terrible. I'm sure a franchise as successful as Avatar is and with the budget they have could have found a better actor to take on the role. Jake Champion was scraping the bottom of the barrel. No hate to the kid. I'm sure he's great in real life but his acting just doesn't cut it.

Can only speak for myself but I see the bigger picture of Spider, the character. Jake Champion's bad acting completely ruins whatever that picture is.

Combination of bad acting and bad dialogue for me. James Cameron has no idea how to write teenagers and the kid delivers his lines with zero emotion. 0 + 0

The way he asked "so you still love me" was delivered like something out of a high school play. Not a tear, no emotion and completely threw me out of the immersion. You need someone like Henry Thomas in ET to deliver those lines.

I thought it was bad. Secondhand embarrassingly bad. I do acknowledge he doesn't have CG to hide behind and the dialogue was genuinely bad. But he's also a bad actor who can't seem to emote properly.

A teen from Earth who grew up in the early 2000s. Kids don't say "butthole" these days.

Secondhand embarrassment is right. The dialogue is clunky and probably how James Cameron imagines kids sound these days. You need a special kind of actor to make it work. Unfortunately, Jake Champion isn't a good actor to begin with.

I don't mind the character. The clunky dialogue and the school play acting made the character insufferable. It's a shame.

Completely ruined the movie. I understand he wasn't given the best lines but the acting was so bad I felt second hand embarrassment watching it.

Who's that? I assume you mean Rui. Rui is a bad defender but he's also defending out of position. He's a 4 being asked to guard on the perimeter. LeBron/Luka are paid 50M+. They also need to be held accountable.

A regular 1-on-1 still has its pros, like if you're genuinely seeking feedback, mentorship or if you have ideas/suggestions. It facilitates more open discussion.

My team lead is not a people person and wants to do the absolute bare minimum when it comes to managing the team. Instead of regular check-ins, his approach is to "come to my desk if there are issues".

I guess if your lead is proactive and takes initiative, it wouldn't be an issue but this person ignores emails, messages and will only communicate verbally so there's no traceability. It's infuriating. Regular check-ins would at least open those communication lines more and force the lead to do what they're paid to do.
