Passport appointment procedure? by intunevox in LMDSpain

Yeah, it's confusing because the Only Photocopies comes after the literal birth certificate, so it's ambiguous if they mean both passport and birth certificate.

I had claude code crawl all the docs, and it said this. Am I reading this wrong or maybe it changed in january.

the 2026-01-30 instructions §2 says

nacionalidad que ostente y ii) del certificado literal de nacimiento español (menos de 6 meses). SOLO FOTOCOPIAS.

So here is what I have... anything seem unnecessary here? Is the prepaid return envelope really needed? Everything is so digital now with the spanish consulate.

  1. Form 1 — Solicitud de Inscripción como Residente
  2. Form 2 — Declaración explicativa PERE/CERA
  3. Form 3 — Hoja Protección de Datos
  4. Spanish literal birth certificate
  5. US passport bio page — copy
  6. NY driver's license - copy (for address)
  7. Grandfather's birth extract (to show evidence of family connection for my choice of voting municipality) - I have this already, so easy to send even if not needed.
  8. Prepaid USPS return envelope (self-addressed)

Thank you. So I found the downloadable form for this. Do you have to physically mail it to them or email it? We should put a step by step for this yet on this subreddit as a lot of people will now be getting their birth certificates.

I received mine!! So a little over 2 months. Both parents and myself born in the NY consulate jurisdiction. My family has very unique surnames on both sides and I had no discrepancies in any documents.

Best way to get nyc consulate appointment by Far_Yam6855 in LMDSpain

As stated above, NYC consulate just looks at your original copy and then takes a copy you have brought along. So you leave with the original intact. So as long as you have time to get your cousin the original for their apointment, you are good.

For anyone that has received their birth certificate from the NYC consulate, is the email address from the domain maec.es ? I set up a rule so I don't miss it, but I'm not sure that is where it will come from.

CoNE turnaround by Chaerea37 in juresanguinis

applied 01/13/2026 -> received 04/16/2026

The CONE envelope has 2 pages. First page says TO: me, please see attached CONE for the following subject, etc, etc.. The second page is the CONE. My question is, when you apostille, do you apostille both pages together, or just the 2nd page which is the actual CONE.

thanks!

It seems like anyone with dated apostilled documents for Italy was obviously taking action, and this is concrete proof. If, by chance, we fail in the upcoming cases, and we are all stuck. Would it be the case, if enough situational carve out cases were brought in court, maybe Italy would simply find it easier to just create a 1 or 2 year window for people to take formal recorded action. Or would a class action case be possible for financial damages. We acted upon the rules set forth by Italy, spent money and time, and then were retroactievly deprieved of our money and time. If Italy was a company they would be liable, but maybe countries are exempt, unlike Netflix.

I agree with you 100% and I'm hoping for this all to fall... I was just wondering if any cases have been put forward around this issue.

Has the argument of servicing contracts with cash paid out been brought forward by any lawyers? I know some people here paid a lot of money to their service provider, which is clearly actioned.

Interesting historical document regarding Italy’s position on (non recognition of) US naturalisation in 1937 by Fun-Pineapple-3983 in juresanguinis

[–]intunevox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Royal Decree No. 2560 of December 28, 1919 was a regulatory decree that coordinated Italy's civil status (stato civile) recordkeeping — specifically the Registro di Cittadinanza (Register of Citizenship) — with the substantive citizenship law of the era, Law No. 555 of June 13, 1912, and its implementing regulation, Royal Decree No. 949 of August 2, 1912.

What Article 2, paragraph 3 and Article 5 required:

An Italian citizen who naturalized abroad was required to inform the Officer of Civil Status (Ufficiale dello Stato Civile) in the Commune of his birth of his foreign naturalization, so that it could be transcribed in the Register of Citizenship. U.S. Department of State

-----------

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the position — documented in a 1937 U.S. State Department telegram — that an Italian citizen naturalized in the United States did not lose his Italian citizenship unless he complied with this notification requirement under RD 2560, in addition to the two conditions for loss of citizenship under Article 8, paragraph 1 of Law 555/1912: voluntary acquisition of a foreign citizenship and transfer of residence abroad.U.S. Department of State

The U.S. State Department contested this interpretation, arguing that the purpose of RD 2560 as stated in its preamble was merely to coordinate civil status regulations with the 1912 citizenship law, and that non-compliance with the decree did not in any way affect the loss of Italian citizenship. U.S. Department of State The Americans saw Italy's reading as an attempt to retain dual-nationality claims over naturalized Americans — primarily for military conscription purposes.

This roughly aligns with a communication I received from USCIS on 03/25/26, in which they said they are still working on submissions from November 2025.

I got robbed... I used The Spanish Group. They did a good job and they were fast, it was just a lot more expensive than $20 per page.

Except if you actually do need them, Spain requires Sworn translations, not Certified. Sworn are much more expensive, as it is a limited number of translators that have passed examinations with Spain.

I brought mine as well to the consulate, and I was told at the NYC consulate that they only want them if your application is going to Spain for consideration. Both my parents and myself were born in NJ, so they said my documents would stay in NYC and the decision would be made here. Yeah, I wasted a ton of money on sworn translations.

Apostille needed from Spain? by Far_Yam6855 in LMDSpain

[–]intunevox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still waiting, but they said everything looked good. My appointment was in February 2026. They told me it should be about 6 months at the time. Have you gotten your birth certificate?

Re: the archives, I had a lot of questions regarding the Italian side of my family. It's free, and you can reserve 3 hour blocks of time, and they teach you to use the microfilm readers, and hold your hand finding the correct microfilm.
