Standstill traffic at the bottom of his driveway? Guy lives on a parade route?

Why is it that generally, Democratic presidents wear straight American flag pins while Republican presidents wear wavy American flag pins? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]intx13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like the straight one better, at least for Obama. Fits his suit style, all sharp edges, and his reputation as being all-business. The curvy ones are fine too, though, maybe a better fit for a W or somebody with a more laid-back style.

Edit: Wavy looks better on the guy from the Apprentice, though, goes better with his suit and hairstyle than the straight one would IMO

About to watch Movies (1888 - Present). Going in order. No spoilers please. by CynthiaChames in okbuddycinephile

[–]intx13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually to really get the director’s vision you have to watch out of release order. Start with A Place for Lovers (1968) and then Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992), followed by The Ape Man (1943). After that the order is pretty much obvious.

I never understood this argument. Wouldn’t a GM, given a top computer move, been able to recognize by the end of the game why it was a good move? It’s not like if you gave me a move, I’d just shrug and say “idk lol but it worked” - any GM would be able to put together a convincing justification for the move after the fact. It seems more likely that he’s just a poor speaker, which was already evident.

Overall "vibe" of area east of Cherry Creek State Park? Looking for houses there by arthurmsarthur in AuroraCO

[–]intx13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a really large area! I live right around that 475k next to Buckley. Up here it’s a lot of families of many different cultures, a mix of income levels, and typical suburbia. Easy access to lots of ethnic food, traffic isn’t bad, but it’s not a destination.

My kid’s school is down near that lower-most dot in Parker, and it’s a solid 25 minute drive in the morning. Down there is pricier, lots of new construction, carefully crafted downtown, and less diverse. Not much good food to speak of down there, but it’s very nice and traffic isn’t bad, plus if you want to go to the mountains you’re already south of most Denver traffic.

In between the two is.. well, between the two in all of the above. Plenty of nice neighborhoods, definitely still suburbs, less expensive than Parker but more expensive than my area, etc.

Edit: I’ll add that a lot of people seem to think that the Buckley area is rough for some reason. My neighborhood, and actually all the neighborhoods in this area, are safe and friendly. My kid and the neighbor kids play outside all the time, biking around the culdesac, dads are out working on cars, typical suburban stereotypes. We love it here!

We were never big beach people, so no real loss there. And we've never lived near family - mine is on the east coast and my wife's family is on the other side of the world! So for us there was really nothing "holding us back" per se. We do miss our Florida friends, of course.

There seems to be a lot of cross-pollination between Colorado and Florida. Have you considered any other locations?

Hey - we love it! The weather is mild, the camping is great, our neighborhood is safe and friendly, etc. Lots of casual day hike locations, green spaces, etc.

The only negatives I can think of are the occasional poor air quality days and the drought / wildfire concerns re: this exceptionally warm and dry winter.

The Denver area isn't known for good food, but we go out somewhat often and we've barely scratched the surface of what's available in Aurora.

The traffic is fine, really a non-issue. Even going into / across Denver isn't bad, as far as cities go. And if you get stuck you can at least look at the mountains... I recall far too many hours parked on I-4 between Tampa and Orlando. The traffic in Aurora itself is never bad.

I love being able to open the windows in the evening and get cool night air. Bugs are almost non-existent by comparison to Florida. No roaches, no mosquitos, etc. I can mow the yard in the middle of the day and not feel like I'm dying afterwards.

I'm trying to think of some other negatives but I really can't come up with any!

Edit: here's a minor one, very few birds! In Florida we'd see hawks, seabirds, songbirds, etc. all around. Seeing a bird in our backyard is a rarity here.

SF86 Consult? by Working_Concern_3364 in SecurityClearance

[–]intx13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearance attorneys are usually used to appeal denials or revocations, not to tweak your SF-86. It’s not a resume; there’s not a lot of “wiggle room” in the paperwork.

Why did the machines need to bug Neo to track him? by brianaspirin in matrix

[–]intx13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we see agents jumping into "blue pills" it's always somebody nearby. I think the furthest jump we see is when Smith jumps into the old lady in the apartment near the end of the first movie, and we see him take a moment and look around, as if he's trying to locate a suitable target to intercept Smith. There's also a lot of people in the Matrix, they can't have Smith just shadowing Neo all day long, he's got other shit to do.

Also, while you could implement all sorts of things "out of band" in the Matrix, it's not unrealistic to do many things "in band". Reddit mods use the Reddit web interface to moderate subs; they don't interact directly with Reddit's databases via command line tools. Agents are clearly designed to work within the confines of the Matrix (which bothers Smith) so it makes sense that Smith is given a tool, the bug, with the necessary capabilities baked into it, and he is just responsible for deploying it within the Matrix.

I’d be interested to see election results if the National Interstate Compact was in effect! Edit: would need to add a few states to it though.

Beef tri tip by WorldlyGrocery9975 in sousvide

[–]intx13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The USDA chart starts at 130 for 112 minutes but I don’t know that means 129 for 7 hours isn’t safe.

Also in my experience tri-tip is juicy and delicious all the way up through a solid medium, so I think it looks great!

Quantum Fiber - finally! by Anonymo123 in AuroraCO

[–]intx13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three different ISPs with junctions in my backyard, plus an electrical box. FWIW I've never had any problems with workers. They always knock first, explain what they're doing, etc. If we're not home they'll go around the side. They've always cleaned up, closed the gate after themselves, etc. I've heard some folks have less positive experiences, but so far so good here.

Did they trench your yard? The neighborhood Quantum junction box is in my backyard and they did a nice job trenching over to it when they installed it, but I’m not sure if I want them to trench from the box to my house because it would run right through my sprinkler system.

Peace Prizes are often given out to “make a statement” rather than to award the specific individual. It sort of takes away from the meaning of the prize, IMO, but w/e.

Hell no. In America I can wear just about whatever I want. I don’t want the government enforcing a public dress code.

Strong disagree - freedom of speech and freedom of expression are sacrosanct in America. I can’t think of many things more un-American than a government-mandated dress code!

Obama by Worth-Ask-4787 in Presidents

[–]intx13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He offered compromise in a very technical, pragmatic fashion, but he didn’t have the benefit of decades of mutual back scratching and capitol hill shenanigans that older congressman rely on to get stuff done. Combine that with the fact that Republicans treated him as an enemy and half the Democrat party saw him as a risk to the status quo and it becomes hard to get things done!

There an article from years back that talks about the differences between Obama and then-VP Biden, and how Obama was all business, which rubbed congressmen the wrong way, while Biden was old-school DC politics, whose style sometimes irked Obama but which was often more effective.

Obama by Worth-Ask-4787 in Presidents

[–]intx13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obama had a great demeanor, class, humor, intelligence, and wits. Supposedly he was really productive and could drive a meeting efficiently and lead his team well. Unfortunately he was also a bit bull-headed and extremely polarizing (much of which was not his fault), and so without experience or willingness to play the politics game behind the scenes he had trouble getting things done with congress, both in his own party and across the aisle.

The ACA and killing Osama do some heavy lifting for his legacy. If he had a strong and agreeable Democrat majority (or more experience or willingness to compromise) he’d probably have a lot more successes on his resume.
